I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my Dissertation which focuses on an argument of whether or not Mythology can be created in a modern society rampant with cynicism.

 

One of the three main areas I discuss is the ability of comic books to achieve a state of myth, for example I have touched upon the similarities of Batman & Robin Hood and Superman & Hercules.

 

So what do you guys think?

Pretty good. I wrote a similar but less in depth paper when I was in college on the same thing, siting modern mythology. Are you mentioning how both myth and comics change over time, as the people who tell the story change?

Depends on your actual definition of mythology. At one point or another, the old myths were believed to be literally true, while no sane adult has ever really believed in Batman.

Urban legends are really more our modern versions of mythology.

 

Comics are more or less fictional representations of our classic mythic archetypes.

I've always thought that in a few thousand years, people could read comics like the Sandman and believe it was our mythology/religion.

 

But not currently, no
