Lord of The Curry Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 Simple question. Biased as fuck but I'll go with Toronto.
cabbageboy Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 My hometown Louisville has had a few bands that have sorta broke out, but no one really huge. Bands like Days of the New, Flaw, etc. I wouldn't say Louisville is the best city for music exactly, but it's probably top 10.
Lord of The Curry Posted April 30, 2005 Author Report Posted April 30, 2005 The entire stretch of Montreal to Southern Ontario is tearin' shit up lately. Broken Social Scene, Stars, Arcade Fire, The Dears, Feist etc. Awesome stuff.
cbacon Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 The entire stretch of Montreal to Southern Ontario is tearin' shit up lately. Broken Social Scene, Stars, Arcade Fire, The Dears, Feist etc. Awesome stuff. Absolutely. I'm loving the duel male/female vocalists some of these bands are working with Just started listening to that Stars album yesterday. I think I have a new favorite for '05.
LessonInMachismo Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 This hot little bitch that I used to talk to on AOL years ago swore up and down that Austin (where she stayed) was the SHIT when it came to live music.
Guest Brian Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 As far as indy scenes go, I'd like to think that Seattle would be on the cutting edge. The Blue Scholars and Maktub leading the pack. I think the Math and Physics Club is pretty decent. There's a lot of great bluesy-soulful stuff around here that's getting augmented by electronica and grunge and jazz, as well as a strong hip hop scene. Modest Mouse seems to be a favorite group, and they pretty much rose out of here.

Yeah, Austin has a good rep probably because of all the acts that come to play the (I think it's) South by Southwest Festival. That show always draws quality.
The Czech Republic Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 Omaha, Nebraska! Man, indie sure picked a shitty genre capital. At least Seattle is...not Omaha, Nebraska. No offense to Black Lushus All offense to Conor Oberst
Carnival Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 I was gonna say that. I agree i don't know how Omaha got crowned the new indy capitol. But it did surpass seattle. My cousin loves all those Emo/Jolly Rock bands from omaha. I have no idea how Omaha all of a sudden became cool. As for me, all my music comes from Detroit.
Guest BrokenWings Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 Chicago has put out some good stuff recently. But it's definitely true what LOTC said about Montreal-South Ontario.
Jorge Gorgeous Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 Modest Mouse are from Issaquah, WA, not Seattle. Duh. Portland, OR isn't a bad spot for music right now. Quasi, The Decemberists, Lifesavas, The Helio Sequence, UHF - they're all outta Portland. Also, we're the home of Everclear and The Dandy Warhols... and, uh, Quarterflash. If you could count a region, the Pacific Northwest is always amongst the leading regions, if not the leading region. K Records being located in Olympia doesn't hurt.
Guest Brian Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 Yeah, I know their from Issaquah, but they got launched out of the Seattle indie scene.
Matt Young Posted May 1, 2005 Report Posted May 1, 2005 How can nobody have mentioned Southern California? Not just LA, but the whole area has some great rock bands. And those who don't originate from down here, come here. Hell, I always wanted to move near LA to attempt to further my music career. *wishes he had a working guitar amp*
Red Baron Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 St. Catharines, Ontario. The capital of emo-music freaks, and only emo-freaks. (go into any record store I'm pretty sure emo is on). Oh, and gotta mention that you like Alexisonfire here too, or else you don't know anything about music. Your not a "scenester" Wads.
Perfxion Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Well, what type of music? For Rap and RnB, Atlanta and New York are owning the entire market.

Alexis has only declined since I heard ".44 Calibre Love Letter" 3 years ago. I could care less about them and their fans now. Having said that, Alexis fans pale in comparison to Billy Talent fans.
Red Baron Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 when Alexis was playing at the Hideaway, they were 1000x times better than what they are now.
Guest BrokenWings Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Alexis think they're too big to come back here now. They're right, but that's beyond the point.
Jorge Gorgeous Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Yeah, I know their from Issaquah, but they got launched out of the Seattle indie scene. I was just being a douche bag.
Special K Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 I won't say it's the best, but Seattle has an excellent music scene. Maktub, U.S.E., Schoolyard Heroes, and I'll go ahead and say the Postal Service, since I think the only live shows they've played are here. (singer's local)
cabbageboy Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 The reason Seattle isn't thought of as #1 anymore is that even though the scene may be solid still, it's just that there's no way to replicate the insane success of the early 90s. As in it seems down but for most places it'd be good.
