My hometown Louisville has had a few bands that have sorta broke out, but no one really huge. Bands like Days of the New, Flaw, etc. I wouldn't say Louisville is the best city for music exactly, but it's probably top 10.

The entire stretch of Montreal to Southern Ontario is tearin' shit up lately. Broken Social Scene, Stars, Arcade Fire, The Dears, Feist etc. Awesome stuff.

As far as indy scenes go, I'd like to think that Seattle would be on the cutting edge. The Blue Scholars and Maktub leading the pack. I think the Math and Physics Club is pretty decent. There's a lot of great bluesy-soulful stuff around here that's getting augmented by electronica and grunge and jazz, as well as a strong hip hop scene. Modest Mouse seems to be a favorite group, and they pretty much rose out of here.

Yeah, Austin has a good rep probably because of all the acts that come to play the (I think it's) South by Southwest Festival. That show always draws quality.

I was gonna say that. I agree i don't know how Omaha got crowned the new indy capitol. But it did surpass seattle. My cousin loves all those Emo/Jolly Rock bands from omaha.

 

I have no idea how Omaha all of a sudden became cool.

 

As for me, all my music comes from Detroit.

Modest Mouse are from Issaquah, WA, not Seattle. Duh.

 

Portland, OR isn't a bad spot for music right now. Quasi, The Decemberists, Lifesavas, The Helio Sequence, UHF - they're all outta Portland. Also, we're the home of Everclear and The Dandy Warhols... and, uh, Quarterflash.

 

If you could count a region, the Pacific Northwest is always amongst the leading regions, if not the leading region. K Records being located in Olympia doesn't hurt.

Alexis has only declined since I heard ".44 Calibre Love Letter" 3 years ago. I could care less about them and their fans now.

 

Having said that, Alexis fans pale in comparison to Billy Talent fans.

I won't say it's the best, but Seattle has an excellent music scene. Maktub, U.S.E., Schoolyard Heroes, and I'll go ahead and say the Postal Service, since I think the only live shows they've played are here. (singer's local)

The reason Seattle isn't thought of as #1 anymore is that even though the scene may be solid still, it's just that there's no way to replicate the insane success of the early 90s. As in it seems down but for most places it'd be good.
