Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 1, 2005 The main thing I noticed about the first list is that whoever was voting on it hasn't played anything before the current systems. ESPN football on there twice? Tecmo Super Bowl blows both of those games out of the water and the fact that people still play it over a decade later proves that. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 Heh the fan vote IGN list is just hilariously bad. SNK vs Capcom? Hahaha yeah, okay. I mean, that game isn't just undeserving, it's flat-out bad. It's the Neo Geo Pocket Color game, not the arcade game. It's a good portable game, but yeah--shouldn't be ranked that high. I have a hard time believing that all the people who voted for it actually played it, though. The controls were SO much better than 'classics' like Castlevania, Double Dragon, Ghosts and Goblins. Castlevania always had crap controls until, oh, say Bloodlines. Weren't really "good" until Symphony of the Night. Double Dragon's hardly a classic, but it was a big hit so people often consider it one. Ghosts and Goblins had good controls, it was just hella hard and your enemies were far better at maneuvering than you. #30: Shenmue II Platform: DC Xbox Developer: Sega-AM2 Publisher: CRI Year: 2001 I have played many games in my day. I have seen all there is to see when it comes to how a game can involve you. And I can say with great certainty that in recent memory nothing in those above categories can even remotely come close to touching Shenmue's utter stranglehold on exactly how powerful entertainment can be. Shenmue is not only the benchmark for games as we know it, but serves as the golden standard for every media. It dethrones the previously untouchable Final Fantasy VII and solidifies itself as the "Citizen Kane" of videogames so effortlessly; it makes you wonder just how far gaming has come. How fucking pretentious can you get? FFVII is more like those Oscar winners where you look back and wonder how a certain other movie didn't win instead. If it were old *and* overrated, perhaps it would be a better comparison. The Shenmues are boring as hell, and the voice-acting/pacing is painful. I've heard lots of people talk about how both games get much better later on, but I've never made it that far on either of them. I think I was still looking for sailors and playing Sega arcade games on 1 and on 2 the last thing I did was air out books. Does anyone remember when people were calling Banjo-Kazooie better than Mario 64?
Anya 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 FF VII is the best game ever. It should have won like, 50 oscars. The only recent game I'd put in a top 30 list is Tekken 5. Best fighter ever. We should do a top 30.

Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 Mega Man 3 is still a bitch on difficulty factor. I still have problems with Protoman and all you need to do is fucking slide. BTW, we really shoud do our own top 30 list of the past games. If were going to do it though, I suggest we make a panel for it. Like you know, the group of best gamers and such (or rather the regulars that come here). I think we should at least have 11 for the panel Thusly: CronoT AndrewTS Anayaka Lightning Flik wildpegasus Renegade Special K And some other people to make 11 for our "gaming panel" to do this Top 30 list. That would work enough. What ya think?
razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 Will the Top 10 be nothing but RPGs in the "Offical TSM List"?

Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 Will the Top 10 be nothing but RPGs in the "Offical TSM List"? Doubt it. Probably just 2 at best. But who knows. The 11 panel does up their own lists, then given "points" based on those lists towards making the final true list. So like if (btw, none of these lists are real): AndrewTS had: 1) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (5) 2) Mega Man 3 (4) 3) Chrono Trigger (3) 4) Super Mario Bros. 3 (2) 5) Super Metriod (1) And Anya had: 1) Final Fantasy VII (5) 2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (4) 3) Chrono Trigger (3) 4) Super Metroid (2) 5) Super Mario Bros. 3 (1) And you had: 1) Metroid Prime (5) 2) Katamari Damacy (4) 3) Halo (3) 4) Soul Calibur (2) 5) ESPN Football (1) * - (#) = points award. Real Top 5 List would be: 1)Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (9) 2) Chrono Trigger (6) 3) Metroid Prime (5) 4) Katamari Damacy (4) and Mega Man 3 (4) 5) Halo (3) In the case of a tie, like Katamari Damacy and Mega Man 3, the one with the higher placements on everyone's list would let it get the better ranking. Halo had higher placing than either Super Metroid or Super Mario Bros. 3, so thus gets buy (even though it got 1 Top 5 vote). See? Nice and easy.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 I would include some obscure SNES puzzle games.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 I'm honored, but I think we should really do a breakdown by genre besides, or at least as a start. Also, I enjoy playing fighting games, but at the same time I'm not very good at them, with next to nobody to beat on save for the computer and a couple of scrubby friends. Jer'd probably be a good choice for at least the fighters. I plead complete ignorance on the best FPSers (well, I love Prime, but not a true FPS), sports games, and pretty much any PC games. My knowledge of NES games is pretty limited, having never owned one personally. What's the status on imports? Kinda unfair to rate a game that isn't accessible to most people. Of course, the imports that never ever made it here are mostly shooters, and I don't know anyone here who really considers themselves well-versed at side-scrolling shooters. For some reason, I think sports games would be overlooked by most of the people on that list.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 Um... Sports nut here. Or did you not see me post up like NHL and Championship Manager threads? And yes, hence why we need 11 people, to make sure we weed out the biasism.
Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted May 2, 2005 That's why I said "most people on that list." Off the top of my head, you're the only sports guy on that list.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 ...really? *looks at list and realizes this is so* Um, well, shit. I didn't think of that. Well, the next 5 people to be added to the panel must know sports.

Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted May 2, 2005 I beat E.T. Oh my God. If there is a panel, he HAS to be on. I can't even remember if I beat E.T. before but I do remember really liking it, explaining how to play to others and wondering why everyone thought it was a bad game years later. think we should at least have 11 for the panel Thusly: CronoT AndrewTS Anayaka Lightning Flik wildpegasus Renegade Special K And some other people to make 11 for our "gaming panel" to do this Top 30 list. I'm flattered. I played a lot when I was younger but haven't really played anything since Double Dragon on the Master System back in the fall. Still enjoy a real good game though. I can't be completey accurate about the old games because I haven't played everything but I still think I can do a good job. Jeesh, the NES games still seem like yesterday! Another question about that list - does anybody there play "extreme sports" games such as the SSX series and Tony Hawk series Not in my case. I am morally obliged not to ever even look at any Tony Hawk skateboarding games. Same deal with the "Fast and teh Furious" Movies, Limp Biscuit Cds and the Triple XXX movies. Guest OSIcon Report post Posted May 2, 2005 The IGN list is alright...at least the top 20 or so. There is still a bunch of things I'd change, but it isn't completely ridiculous. The Reader's List is terrible though. In all fairness though, the way they went about the list was kind of retarded. Most people aren't going to go back and give scores to games they played 10 or 15 years ago. People are a lot more likely to score games as they play them, which might partially explain the new game bias. Though I am sure there are still other factors (ie. the voters just being dumb). The biggest problem with these lists is that some games earn a position for just being innovative or the first of it's kind, while other games get their position based entirely on gameplay. For example, Super Mario Bros. and Ocarnia of Time are number one and two. Mario gets his ranking almost entirely for what it meant, while Ocarnia of Time's position is based heavily on how good the actual game was. Which factor is more important to the list? Influence or overall quality? Without defining that, a lot of the choices seem odd because you mix the two together all over the place. From skimming it over, there also seems to be a lack of consistency with sports games and a lack of traditional sports games in general. NHL Hockey '94 is in the top 20 and Tecmo Bowl is 26, but I can think of a few sports games that I didn't see on there that should be (either for influence or quality....or both). You should really give the Tony Hawk games a chance. You don't have to be a skateboarding fan to enjoy the games. Besides, how can you judge a certain genre without actually playing them? For example, I don't like RPGs, but I've tried several of them (including the renowned FF VII) just in case.
