One and Only Star Wars Geekiness Thread

Recommended Posts

Considering how powerful Luke was by the time the Thrawn Trilogy came out, it had to be balanced with something that could "cancel" his powers.

And without focusing on the main characters, there is no way that a Star Wars book could sell. As much as I loved the Rogue Squadron books, they didn't do as well as the Thrawn Trilogy, or some of the crappier series, like the Jedi Academy Trilogy.

I disagree. Yeah, the Thrawn Trilogy beat it out, but that was very critically acclaimed and it's flaws (Like the Yslarmi). But you're saying the Jedi Academy Trilogy beat out the Rogue Squadron Series? I have a hard time believing that, since the Rogue Squadron a very popular series.

It's not that they wouldn't sell, either. If they didn't, its more because they never got rid of the older characters so that new ones could take their place. Even in the newest books, Luke, Leia, and Han are at the forefront. They've had a ton of little characters that might be able to take their place if they simply gave them time to develop. Dash Rendar, for one, was not a main character, but was built up immensely and succeeded (At least, in my opinion). If they simply built time into it, they wouldn't have to have a new Suncrusher or Death Star or whatever every other book, but could focus on a new band of misfits that do incredible things.

Hell, Knights of the Old Republic, 1 and 2, had far better plots and more compelling characters than anywhere in the Star Wars Series.

All this EU talk also makes me restate something I said earlier in this thread somewhere (probably), and that's that Star Wars really starts sucking when reading summaries of EU plotlines resemble reading comic book descriptions. Star Wars is meant to be a fairly simple legend/myth kind of story, and when technicalities and one-upsmanship get involved it cheapens the entire concept for me. So yeah, again, except for Shadows of the Empire, the EU blows.

Its as if the setting became a character unto itself, which was never the point.

I had almost forgotten about Shadows of the Empire. That was a fun read, and one of the few EU things that I thought actually felt like Star Wars. The biggest issue I had with it was, and I know this will make me unpopular, Dash Rendar. It's like the author said "Well, I can't have Han in this one, so I'll make a character just like him, but edgier, more nineties." Then

they kill him off and we are supposed to care

The only thing I really hope is that they will a overarching plot throughout the thing. I've seen Star Trek, and my main problem with it is that it's episodic. The less you focus on getting in and out of an impossible situation in one hour, the better the storytelling you can get.

Oh yeah, and no time travel. Definitely no time travel.

That was more of a jab at Star Trek, because everything I hate about Star Trek is summed up in their 'Time-Travel' episodes. They are truly have the dumbest premises I've ever experienced. Guh.

oh I know, bro...it's just when you mentioned that, I tried to picture Star Wars characters trime travelling and dimension hopping and my brain broke!

Episode III won two People's Choice Awards last night - Favorite Movie and Favorite Drama. Lucas got on stage and told everyone he didn't make movies for critics or studio execs...he made movies for people.

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iii/releas...ws20060110.html

That's terrific. EpIII may not receive any Golden Globes, and any Academy Award hopes may be limited to technical stuff, FX, and maybe music or score, so this is a great achievement, specially if you consider there were more choices of similar-typed fantasy/action/adventure movies like Batman Begins, King Kong, or Harry Potter, which were all fan favorites. Congrats to Lucas and the people that made Episode III.

"City of the Edge of Forever" was great. As was "The Voyage Home" and "First Contact".

Maybe for a movie, they're okay (I did enjoy First Contact). But as an episode, they've played the 'Time Warp' card so many times, it hard not to see a bunch of Teenagers joyriding around, only to shoot off a star and warp back through time. Hell, why haven't any villians thought of time travel? It's just... Ugh. Whenever I see those episodes (It seems like there are forty of them), it just sort of reminds me about what I don't like about Star Trek.

Um, "First Contact"?

Also, the entire "Temporal Cold War" storyline from "Enterprise".

Just some comments from someone who is not a Star Wars geek

The movies are okay highlighted by some very cool moments and fun charactors like Darth Vader and the two robots. The movies are borrowing overall though.

I could not get into the 4th and 5th movies. The last one I did not see as of yet.

The animated series that was put out rescently I enjoyed very much. In fact it destroyed the movies in terms of enjoyment, coolness and fighting scenes. The first DVD I saw was better than the second one.

By 4th and 5th, I hope you meant Phantom Menace and Clones, and not New Hope and Empire.

Anybody who says they couldn't get into Phantom Menace and Clones can't be THAT bad. They were terrible movies.

Eh, they had their moments.

Granted, I ususally just gloss over Ep. I untill the big lightsaber duel, and Ep II I always watch with commentary to cancel out the terrible dialogue. But still, both had their moments.

What the hell? Movies can't borrow overalls. Trousers maybe, but not overalls.

WP hasn't clarified which two movies he was talking about.

No, you don't want him back in here. I don't either.

Don't know if anyone else saw this over at TheForce.net:

Star Wars Live Action Television Show Update

Posted By Dustin on February 15, 2006

I just got done reading a quick interview with Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet over at Movieweb.com and noticed one new bit of information I had not heard until today. Steve mentions the live action TV series as "targeted more towards the end of the decade". Up to this point I was under the impression we'd see the animated series in late 2007 and the live action series near the end of 2008. I guess things have taken a different track for this new television project over at Lucasfilm. Here's a quick snippet from Movieweb.com:

"Speaking of the future, you said the Star Wars TV show is years away...

Steve Sansweet: We're doing it in two phases. The first is Star Wars animation, which is CG 3-dimensional animation, like a Toy Story, that takes place during the period of the Clone Wars that takes place between Episodes 2 and 3. And that we're setting for Fall of 2007. Preproduction is underway, we're doing animation test, people are working on initial scripts. So we're well under way on that. And George is very much taking hand and is very much part of the whole process. I know some people thought maybe he would just hey "hey, go do it," but George is Star Wars and he's always gonna be very closely involved in this.

The other project is live action, and the live action is going to take place between Episode 3 and Episode 4. We're looking at a 1 hour show and [Producer] Rick McCallum has said the ideal would be to come up with 100 hours to really get into the story line and characters, and that's the direction we're going in. So that is really targeted more towards the end of the decade."

So there you have it. A little dissapointing if true but think about it this way, I'd rather have them take a longer time and create a masterpiece rather than them just crank out crap with the Star Wars brand on it!

Well okay then. They finally went full-on CGI. And 100 episodes for the live-action series? Yikes!

I love that last line, "I'd rather have them take a longer time and create a masterpiece rather than them just crank out crap with the Star Wars brand on it!" It took 16 years to make Episode 1, guys...
