In the 70s and 80s Sammartino and Backlund had loads of guys brought in to feud for a couple of months, lose and then leave the company.

I disagree on this here. Back then, wresting was still territory based, and most heels never hung around the same place too long to the point they would start losing heat. Their job was to come on, beat up the big face, lose the blowoff, and leave for a while. Lather, rinse, repeat.
