Rockstar to release Bully for PS2 and Xbox this October

Grand Theft Auto publisher Rockstar Games has just announced the first details of PS2 and Xbox school-'em-up Bully.

The game - the first from Rockstar Vancouver - is set in the schoolyard and promises to combine "innovative, original gameplay with humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling".

Players take the unlikely role of a troublesome schoolboy, who must stand up to bullies, gets picked on by teachers, plays pranks on other kids, tries his luck with the laydeez and ultimately learns to navigate the obstacles of the reform school Bullworth Academy.

"We are really excited about the first title to be developed by our Rockstar Vancouver studio," said Rockstar boss Sam Houser. "We fought hard to keep this title under wraps for ages and I am thrilled that we can finally unveil it to people at E3."

Bully coder Rockstar Vancouver was formerly known as Barking Dog Studios and employs around 100 developers.

While this is its first game under the Rockstar umbrella, as Barking Dog it worked on Global Operations, Homeworld Cataclysm and Treasure Planet for PC along with Transworld Skateboarding for Xbox.

I can't even remember the last time there was a school-themed videogame. Sounds interesting but I can't say I've played any other game that Barking Dog Studios has made before.

I'm surprised nobody has posted a thread about The Warriors.

GI had it as a cover story, but it actually sounds interesting--an updated take on the Beat 'em up genre (based on the old movie, of course).

The obvious joke here is if they'll permit a school shooting, but it's honestly what you'd expect from Rockstar, even though they're not developing it.

This is rather vague on what exactly type of game it is. School sim I guess? Sounds kind of weird and boring.

Sounds like it might be a "GTA in the schoolyard" type deal where your character get different missions to do (prank a teacher, steal this kid's lunch money, etc.) and gains or loses reputation with certain people.

This is going to start a shit storm with parent and religous groups.

They should get Marilyn Manson to do the soundtrack, since his music always seems to get linked to school shootings.

I concur, the republican sect and the religionITES will be all over this like a cheap suit.

I was hoping it'd be a game about getting stoned all the time and fucking skinny coked up hos only to get wacked by all your buddies...

*waits for the impending 'I hate Rockstar and their marketing tactics' post from AndrewTS* ;)

God forbid I dislike companies bribing magazines to get 9+'s for their games.

That's why ya don't read the magazines. You'd be surprised at how many other companies already do that.

I know this is an old thread, over a year old, but I figured that I'd go ahead and post all of this in here since there's a Bully thread already:

IGN Review - 8.9

GameTrailers Video Review - 8.1 out of 10

Game Informer - 8.5 out of 10

GamePro - 4.5 out of 5

Games Radar - 9 out of 10

GameBrink - 92 out of 100

1UP - 10 out of 10

I just ordered this in the Family Video deal for $30.98 so I hope that I really enjoy it. :)

And over a year later, it seems that R* didn't fill the moneyhats afterall, because the game was able to get by on its own merits, and we didn't get 9+ scores.

Plus, just like we knew last year, the content is extremely tame, and JT knew jack about the game.

honestly the game looks pretty good. This is a good environment for the GTA-style free roaming style. However, I have too many games on tap to play between FF13, Okami, RE4, and MGS3, so it will be a while until I get to this.

Are you from the future?

And for just $10 extra dollars, you can get the "Collector's Edition"...

Ok, I just found a little bulldog running around, and I think you're supposed to (or you just can) play frisbee with it, but instead I attacked it. I grabbed it by the head, then punched it right in the neck. I couldn't believe it.

This game is awesome, there's a lot of stuff to do in it besides punching innocent dogs in the neck.

Also Justice Leauge Heros an Family guy are excellent as well. This was a great 2 days for games
