Athlete you thought was gonna be great...

Recommended Posts

seen quite a few of the ones I was thinking of.

For basketball, I say to extent Damon Stoudemire and Marcus Camby.

Don't get me wrong, Stoudemire had a few good years in Portland and Camby is as great a role player as you can get, but they are no where near the hype they got early in their careers. Camby is a nice addition player, but was made to be a star with the number pick in one of the best draft classes in recent history (AI, Nash, Antoine Walker, Kobe, Marbury, Ray Allen, Peja, and more).

For baseball, I don't remember if I saw Todd Van Poppell listed. Another guy I expected big things to happen for was a Red Sox prospect Greg Blosser. He was the 16th pick in the draft, had some pretty good numbers in the minors, only was in the bigs for two seasons I believe. Another guy, in a Marcus Camby situation I would say is Trot Nixon. Don't get me wrong, I love Trot and he puts up good numbers when he is healthy, but I remember when he was in the minors, he was being called the next great Red Sox and the guy that would turn around the franchise.

Pretty much anyone the Flames drafted in the 1990s. Dan Tkaczuk, Rico Fata, Jesper Mattsson, Hnat Domenichelli, Niklas Sundblad... the list goes on.

Near the top of that list, however, would probably be where you'd find Derek Morris. The guy was just hyped beyond belief here after a few good seasons, and then the development stopped. Calgary always thought he'd give us more.

Does anyone remember a Baltimore Orioles pitcher named Ben McDonald? I remember when I was little I had his rookie card, and at the time it cost something like $30. But I never heard of him actually doing anything in the majors.

I was going to mention Ben McDonald.

I still remember the first time he pitched in a game. He came out of the bullpen, induced an inning-ending double play, and got a nice ovation from the Memorial Stadium crowd. Personally, I think McDonald was just a head case who liked to do stupid things like wrestle alligators, and tried to coast on his natural talent without really working toward becoming a better major-leaguer.

NBA: Harold "Baby Jordan" Miner,

If you thought this guy would be good, that is your own fault. He couldn't shoot, dribble, play defense. besides that he was a excellent college player.

Anyone remember Mike Mamula?

I remember him. A good one to bring up for this topic. He was supposed to be awesome, but never developed at all.

Wasn't Mamula on 'roids? I know that he was drafter uber-high because of his amazing combine, but I thought that it was generally believed that he was on the juice, which is why he was all of a sudden able to jump higher & further, run faster, lift more weight, etc.

I need to mention a few other people.

Sherman Douglas - Dude came out of the gates fast in Miami and was the MAN his second year putting up 19 and 9assist a game for the Heat. Then he got injured for the next 3 years and was never anything spectacular again.

Dino Radja - All you Celtics fans know full well that Dino was the man and shoulda been the man for a long time. He was destined to be a 20-10 guy before he said fuck this and left the NBA.

Bo Kimble - I mean seriously. he put up 35 a game his senior year. Then the Clippers drafted him and said "You know....how about we never play you....ever."

I don't believe he ever tested positive for roids actually. Some guys just test really well but the workouts never translate to the game.

I've seen a couple mentions of Mateen Cleaves, I still think he can be a productive NBA 6th or 7th man somewhere if given the chance. He won't score a ton of points, but as a pure point guard theres no way anyone can convince me that he's not good enough to play 15-20 minutes a game.

For whatever reason I thought Kyle Boller would be a good-great NFL QB. Hell I still think with the right people around him he could be productive. (and yes, I know I'm wrong)
