You make it seem like they're making you stay in Des Moines, which reminds me... When I was moving from Oklahoma to Minnesota in August '99, my friend and I decided to stop in Des Moines. After trying three hotels and finding no vacancy, we discovered it was State Fair week and good luck getting a hotel anywhere in DM. So we drove on up to Ames (45 minutes north). Same situation. We had to go all the way to Clear Lake (about 2 hours north) before finding a hotel, at which point it was 2 in the morning.
