Here's an article concerning the "amnesty" clause

The New York Knicks' plans to waive Allan Houston have become synonymous with the rule, obviously, and the Los Angeles Lakers' Brian Grant is another reasonably big name who's sure to be released. Knee problems, though, mean that neither is still regarded as a certain difference-maker.

YES~!!!!

And Webber?

For all the concern about his mobility, cutting Webber holds little appeal to the Sixers. He had less than half a season alongside Allen Iverson, and Philadelphia just fired Jim O'Brien to bring Mo Cheeks back to town. Philly understandably wants to give the Iverson-Webber partnership more time to click under a new coach ... especially since the Sixers would still be required to pay the $62 million over the three seasons that remain on Webber's contract.

"The Lakers would love that," said one Webber confidante. "But it's not going to happen. Trust me."

Marc Stein is the senior NBA writer for ESPN.com.

Um, no? Why the fuck would they need another useless forward?

Well, it would be a Atlanta first rounder, which pretty much guarentees lottery pick. But on a team with 8 small forwards and no center, you could do worse than a 22 year old, skilled 7 footer.

The whole "skilled" thing remains to be seen. I think Atlanta should take that trade as well, I am just leery of Darko's supposed talent.

Kid did drop 16 - 8 in his first start. I mean thats impressive for not being able to touch the playing floor for almost 2 years. He has some nice skills. He just looked lost by the speed around him, which is understandable when you haven't played NBA ball.

Atlanta has had one good draft in years (last years Childress/Smith/Ivy draft was very good and underrated) Management has no idea what they are doing. They obviously should have been taking Chris Paul or another point this year instead of Marvin Fucking Williams. The quicker they get rid of their lottery picks the better I say, because all they are going to do is waste them.

I still don't get that pick at all. That or the huge hype behind Marvin Williams. I never saw anything great from him at all. Chris Paul would have made SOOO much more sense there.

Isn't that a sad commentary in general that you would rather give away a first round pick then watch them blow it. But if you look at recent history you're right. I'd like the trade straight up if I was Atlanta. Or at least make the 1st rounder float until about 2012, because they might be in the Top 5 until then.

Actually Darko just turned 20 last month. I dont think there is a center in next years draft who has as much supposed upside as Darko still has so It would work for Atlanta nicely.

yeah, I'd pull the trigger if I was ATL, no question. Harrington is a pretty good player, good defender, but he's not a 4 and they really don't need him with Smith, Childress AND Williams. I'd have taken Paul if I was ATL too, because they really need a PG, but the Williams hype was rediculous to the point that they probably thought they'd be reliving the 84 draft if they passed him up. ATL needs to be after Dickau or Damon Stoudamire.

If I was Dumars I don't think I'd bail on Darko so quick, you had the balls to draft him #2 so stick it out, but Harrington is a good fit for them so it's a coin flip

I'd only pass on this trade because of the offers that are coming up for Harrington in the meantime. Eddy Curry is still out there, and so is Chandler, Boozer and Gooden.

The trade isn't lopsided, but the Hawks should reject that trade and see offers they can get up until late August. Especially with that lottery pick.

Great point. I don't know how anyone can justify passing on Marvin Williams with the hype everyone was giving him. It's easier to sign a point who's already played a few years of NBA ball (the men you mentioned).

But hype is just that, from dictionary.com:

Excessive publicity and the ensuing commotion: the hype surrounding the murder trial.

Exaggerated or extravagant claims made especially in advertising or promotional material: “It is pure hype, a gigantic PR job” (Saturday Review).

An advertising or promotional ploy: “Some restaurant owners in town are cooking up a $75,000 hype to promote New York as ‘Restaurant City, U.S.A.’” (New York).

Something deliberately misleading; a deception: “ [He] says that there isn't any energy crisis at all, that it's all a hype, to maintain outrageous profits for the oil companies” (Joel Oppenheimer).

I mean really... It's just bullshit, likely spread by UNC alum and Williams' agent to get him drafted much higher than he should have been. Is it really just me or what?

No seriously, there is no reason for the Hawks to draft williams when you have Harrington, Diaw, Smith, and Childress all playing the same position and they are all your best players. They needed every other position besides small forward and drafted a small forward.

The Salim Stoudimire pick in the 2nd round is giong to be their best pick of this draft. He dropped 39 the other night in the Summer league(yeah, I know...its summer league, but a shooter is a shooter)

Posted

Salim is a pure shooter that's for sure. From my admittedly small exposure to him he's not much of a defender though. He can handle the point okay, but I'm not sure I'd ask him to do so in the NBA. As long as they only ask him to score I think you're right about that pick.

The Phoenix Suns continue to position themselves to match an expected five-year, $70 million dollar offer sheet from the Atlanta Hawks for Joe Johnson.

On Wednesday the Suns agreed to send center Jake Voskuhl to the Charlotte Bobcats for a conditional second round pick, a Suns team souce said.

The move clears $1.875 million off the cap for Phoenix. Suns owner Robert Sarver has charged Suns managment with finding a way to match Johnson's offer without incurring the luxury tax next season.

According to the same Suns source, the team still intends to match any offer for Johnson.

This move combined with the new amnesty clause (Phoenix plans to ask for relief from Howard Eisley's contract) should do the trick.

Rockets agree to undisclosed terms with Ryan Bowen on a 2 year deal.

Well, hand the trophy to the Rocks, this puts them over the top ;) . Really though, if they can resign Jon Barry and Deke and trade one or two combo guards of the dozen they seemingly have for a true point (Damon Stoudamire, come on down!), I'd call it a successful off-season.

Posted
Acutally, Stoudamire is a FA and the Rockets are his top choice, from the stuff I've read, so it may be your lucky day.

Yeah but the Rockets spent their MLE exception on Stormile, and I highly doubt DS will sign for just the LLE of "only" $1.7-$2.0 million per. It'll probably take a sign and trade, but since the Rockets have I think 8 guards under contract and Dion Glover (who performed very well for their summer league team) possibly coming in, I wouldn't mind unloading 1 or 2 of them. Hey, the Rockets do have plenty of contracts expiring at the end of this season. If the Trailblazers want any of Moochie Norris, Clarence Weatherspoon, Vin Baker, or David Wesley they can be my guest.

Kinda good pick up for them, him being the back up 2 guard I guess. I would have thought he would have shot for more playing time.

I know this is completely out of the blue and all, but I was looking at Memphis's summer league roster and just now relized that Kennedy Winston didn't get drafted. What in the ever loving fuck was THAT all about.

The Hawks need to do something. Atlanta needs to get Darko. Darko is only 20 with tons of upside. No one really knows how good he’ll be yet since all he has done is sit on the Pistons bench. The Hawks have been looking for a big man all summer long. They've been after Dalembart, Curry, and Chandler. Al Harrington is the odd man out in Atlanta. That's why they drafted whom they did in the NBA Draft. They weren't impressed with what he brought to the table. They were hoping for a lot more out of him. The Hawks plan on dumping him in Chicago if they are able to get Curry or Chandler in a sign and trade deal.

I don't know if I would give up a first round draft pick for Darko though.

With Dixon going to Portland, the Blazers may be out of the running for Chris Duhon. The Blazers and New Jersey were interested in him.
