The official summer horror films thread

Recommended Posts

Since there's already a Star Wars thread, I thought it might be appropriate to talk abou this summers horror movies (there's alot of them, apparently). Here's the list of the films hitting theatres (and a few on dvd) this summer.

-June 10th: "High Tension" and "The Ordeal" (Limited Release) (Ordeal can best be described as a French version of "Deliverance")

-June 11th: "All Souls Day" (Debuts on Sci-Fi. From the director of "The Attic Expeditions" comes a zombie film set during Mexico's Day of the Dead. Features Actors Danny Trejo and Jeffrey Combs)

-June 14th: "Dead Meat" and "Trauma (both hit DVD.) ("Trauma" is from the director of the awesome "My Little Eye", and stars Colin Firth, Mena Suvari, and Naomi ("28 Days Later") Harris)

-June 24th-"Land of the Dead"

-July 1st: "Undead"

-July 5th: "Premonition" (DVD) (Japanese Horror film that has resevied some real buzz)

-July 8th: Dark Water" (Yet another remake of a Japanese film)

-July 19th: "Rottweiler" (DVD) (New film from Brian Yuzna, featuring Paul Naschy, and a bloodthirsty cyborg Rottweiler)

-July 22nd: "The Devils Rejects"

-July 29th: "The Night Fliers"

-August 12th: "The Skeleton Key"

-August 26th: "The Cave" and "The Brothers Grimm" (Brothers Grimm is from Terry Gilliam, and stars Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Jonathan Pryce, Lena Headey, Peter Stormare, and Monica Belluci.)

Well, talk about your anticipation of these films, non anticipation, or whatever. Oh, if you've seen them, or are going to, that wouldn't hurt either.

If The Ordeal is described as a french Deliverance, then does this mean the movie will contain man-rape? *shudder*

IM looking forward to High Tension and Land of the Dead.

I wanna see High Tension and Dark Water, but the latter is just cause of Jennifer Connelly. I haven't seen her in a bad movie yet.

EDIT: Shit, nevermind. Thought they were talking about Dario Argento's Trauma

There's male rape, dark humor, forced gender bending, crucifixtion, and a scene where a hillbilly psycho practically out of an Edward Lee story fucking a pig.

you obviously haven't seen that movie where she's trapped overnight in a Target with Frank Whaley...the only saving grace in that flick is that her tits are tremendous to oogle at...

Carreer Opportunities? Nope, haven't seen it. But whenever someone names a bad movie she's been in, it's always that one.

Land of the Dead is a must.

Prolly wait to rent Haute/High Tension since the company releasing it still hasn't decided whether to release it dubbed in English or in it's original French and are possibly going to use a little of both which is just bizarre.

The original Dark Water was boring as shit so I don't have high hopes for the remake.

well so far the worst movie I've seen her in is The Rocketeer, and that wasn't so bad.

But since 1996 she's been in a KILLER groove. Mulholland Falls, Dark City, Waking the Dead, Requiem for a Dream, A Beautiful Mind, House of Sand and Fog, all awesome. Hulk wasn't so great, but it wasn't so bad either.

Haute Tension was just OK, IMO. VERY intense first act. I could see the ending coming though, and dindn't really like it.

What's the Brother's Grimm about? I'm intrigued.

EDIT: Shit, nevermind. Thought they were talking about Dario Argento's Trauma

Anchor Bay is releasing that on DVD August 23rd. Now if only they'srelease "Dead & Breakfast"...

Just saw "All Souls Day" on Sci Fi, and it was disapointing. Sure, Jeffrey Combs was fun, and there was some decent gore, but that was it. In a way, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good either.

I'm seeing "High Tension" tomorrow.

Ummm yeah, thats High Tension, dude (or should I say the english translation to Haute Tension or whatever its called in Europe. This is the same movie that we've been talking about here....

I went and saw Switchblade Romance or High Tension or whatever you want to call it on Friday. Not many people at the theatre but didnt surprise me. The first 30 minutes was somewhat lame, but you knew the shit was going to hit the fan soon, so there was some anticipation there, but it still kind of blew. But when it picked up, it REALLY picked up and turned into a fucking nailbiter for sure, chuck full of very realistic and distrurbing gore in parts (and this was even edited?!!!) and the general formula of very extreme terror worked.

I have to comment on the ending without really giving out spoilers though. I felt like the last 5-10 minutes just ruined what could have been the best horror film in awhile, but instead it turned out to be definately an above average film, but I dont think it will hold up well in future viewings because of the finish. ALOT of scenes in the context of the film building up the killer and what the killer did and how other characters were used/what they did ended up not make any sense whatsoever considering what you end up finding out about, well....the ending! Ultimately it leaves alot of plot holes out there for people to figure out themselves but they go overboard with the plot holes, leaving you feel more confused than anything after watching it and a little underwhelmed that it didnt all tie in together, much like, say, aFight Club or Identity, as a few examples. But maybe when/if I watch it again, clues will be picked up more for it to make more sense.

So is the international uncut version avaliable on DVD in the US region?

Just read about High Tension. Looked fun, but now I'm not going to see it, because it apparently relies on just about my least favorite plot device of all time. Reeeeeeeeeeeetarded.
