Inspired by the The OaO "Land of the Dead" talkback thread, where people are posting their favourite 'living dead' flick listings. I figured, I haven't seen a 'tourney' for this genre before - and if it happened, I must have completely missed it. ;p Either way, let's get down to brass tacks. Some of the usual suspects will be pre-included [see bottom of this post] - but please nominate up to three zombie/living dead flicks that you have SEEN [not just heard of] that you think should also be in this tournament. It's a holiday weekend up here, so we'll keep this open until Wednesday and then start the brackets. Also, up for debate is the inclusion of such films as: - 28 Days Later... - The Crazies (which, btw - Brad Anderson is remaking this film for 2006) - The Omega Man (I was also going to say The Last Man on Earth as well, but the creatures in that film are explicitly called Vampires, whereas I don't remember them being called anything in Omega Man) All of the above films don't have traditional zombies, but do deal with some zombie type themes - such as viral infections and whatnot. Does anyone have an objection to including any of these in the running for nominations? On to the 12 pre-included flicks... I've seen all of these and think they're all worthy of inclusion. Obviously, all of Romero's films, a few other classics, plus the latest "nextgen" releases in the zombie genre: - Dawn of the Dead [original] - Dawn of the Dead [remake] - Day of the Dead - Dead Alive/Braindead [Peter Jackson] - Land of the Dead - Night of the Living Dead [original] - Night of the Living Dead [remake] - Return of the Living Dead - Return of the Living Dead, Part II - Shaun of the Dead - Undead - Zombi 2/Zombie Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2005 "Evil Dead" shouldn't count because they are possessed not brought back from the dead. "28 Days Later" isn't a zombie film either because the "zombies" in it are infected living rather than living dead. I think "Gates of Hell", "The Beyond", "The Dead Next Door", and "ROTLD 3" are the most logical choices to make it a field of sixteen. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It's a parasite that can be sexually transmitted, and turns you into a sex-crazed zombie. As tawdry as that sounds, it's a hell of a movie. One of Cronenberg's first. May I recommend "Dead And Buried" It's a not-so-traditional zombie movie with a town with a secret, the granpa from "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", Robert Englund, a really creepy atmosphere, and a hyperdermic needle to the eye that outdoes the splinter to the eye in "Zombi 2" (mostly because it's more sudden and simplistic, and not as overdone, as the splinter scene) Then theres "Re-Animator". I'm honestly suprised no one mentioned that one yet. Oh, I recently got to downloading "Undead". It's pretty fun, but not as great as the hype would lead you to believe. Even though 28 Days Later is technically not a living dead zombie flick, I'd much rather have it in there than crap like ROTLD2. And seeing as how Undead hasn't even been released yet, how can we vote on it? Anyone who nominates Resident Evil gets a swift kick to the groin. CGI gore my ass. A corpse revived in this way. One who looks or behaves like an automaton. A tall mixed drink made of various rums, liqueur, and fruit juice. The Crazies fit that too, but the concept of the movie was better than the execution. Omega Man and any other movie based off "I Am Legend" is vampire. Special K 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2005 Ok, I think Shivers is in, but according to that definition, I think Evil Dead/ED2 should be out (though I LOVE those movies, of course) because the 'zombies' are not necessarily dead, and they also act with intelligence, even taking on the personality of the host to seduce the unpossessed. Army of Darkness, on the other hand, would qualify. The deadites don't look like "traditional" zombies, but they're revived corpses. So, if AOD counts, there's my third nomination. Though they're not usually considered to be zombie movies, one could argue that most of the Friday the 13th movies would qualify, since Jason has been back brought back from the dead several times. Downhome 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2005 Choking Hazard My cousin bought this at Best Buy for $9.99. Heck, the only reason he bought it was because it was so cheap. We watched it, and we both loved it. It doesn't have a straight up serious tone either, it's more in the same vein as Shaun of the Dead. It's not as good as Shaun, but it's very entertaining to me, as well as being something a little different. Going solely by definitions for the tourney can be tricky, though. If we start down that road then we could say that Frankenstein is a zombie movie...which I guess it sorta is. I'm happy to see that Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man) has been mentioned at least twice so far. I like it every bit as much as Romero's films, possibly even more so. I like to think of it like this: If Steve Odedkerk followed up "Kung Pow: Enter The Fist" with a Zombie movie, it would be a little like "Choking Hazard". Also, "Dead Meat", which has zombies, lots of gore, a weird sense of humor, and cows that eat people. Then theres "Stacy", a Japanese zombie film with zombie school girls, a weapon called "Blues Campbell Right Hand # 2" (Their spelling, not mine), an army called "The Romero Kill-Repeat Squad", and a defense squad of Drew Berrymore fangirls. It's basically like the best movie Troma never made. Oh, and "Junk", which is a Japanese rip off od Italian Zombie films and "Return of the Living Dead 3", with Yakuza, a Zombie that eats it's own flesh, and a bad ass, speedy, intelligent, and strong zombie babe with a nice pair of tits. "Wild Zero" has already been mentioned, and I can't begin to tell you how much I love that movie. It's like the manliest film ever made. I don't know if The Beyond qualifies, cuz like the Evil Dead flicks, it's more about possession & general supernatural horror than zombies. Same thing with all the Demons franchise. However, movies like Tombs of the Blind Dead (the first and best of the Blind Dead series) and John Carpenter's The Fog should be under consideration. Guest The Iron Yuppie Report post Posted July 2, 2005 The May issue (Australia) of Empire Magazine promoted the fact that ("at last") Undead was to be getting a July release in the US through Lions Gate Films. I don't know if this is still accurate, and in any event, I imagine that it would be a limited release. Also, if you need films to make up the numbers in the tournament (ie. one that should in no way whatsoever receive any votes), try Plan 9 From Outer Space. One of the few zombie flicks that wasn't HUGELY mainstream (Shaun, Dawn '04, 28DL, etc.) in the past few years that entertained me. There was a passion in it that I just loved. Plotholes galore? Plus, while he's not as cool as Dr. Cain, The Warden is a great villain. And, it has one of the funniest exchanges in horror history Dr. Philips: That's the way to the hole!
