Smackdown VS Raw 2006

Recommended Posts

Will it be possible to do an All-CAW GM Mode? If so, I'll have a blast running Ring of Honor...

Pretty sure you can. I'm hoping you can draft CAWs. If not, I don't see why you can't release the WWE guys and sign a roster of CAWs.

Of course there are only 20 Roster spots per show in GM Mode and only 30 caws can be made. So both shows can't be full of CAWs... but I guess you can even it out with the released guys like Haas, Spike, Hassan, Jindrak, Christian, Jericho to create some kind of Indy Dream land.

Which I think I may do when I get enough CAWs up.

Yeah, you can do it. I believe the IGN article said that the CAW's would appear in the "Free Agent Pool"...

I hope there's an option to bar certain wrestlers from even participating. A la the HCTP pre-season mode draft. I have a few guys on my list whom I don't even want to see in there. :P

But couldn't you make 60 total with 2 memory cards? Although I don't know how it works in SD, like if you can only use one card's wrestlers during gameplay or what.

I settle for one or two originals that I use for squashes, and unfeatured wrestlers that I make whenever I get bored.

I'm up to around 20, and I haven't used at least 4 of them.

People making 30 odd CAW blows my mind. I barely bother to make 3 or 4 of them, yet alone a whole memory cards worth.

Ditto. Making just ONE is a huge effort for me. I used to make TONS on the old Firepro games (Snes and Saturn), but making a CAW in Smackdown is too involved for me to say, "Hey, I can't wait to get home so I can spend three hours morphing this guy's face!!"

That's why (unless you're good) you just find some online. Then in only takes about 1 minute to morph the face. Just look at the formula, then edit, repeat.

Yea, it's not the No Mercy CAW system of course, where you could get a similar look of almost any wrestler in less then 5 minutes, but it doesn't take THAT long if you just find a good CAW that you like on the internet. (And now, if you have PS2 online, evidently you can trade CAWs, so you might can just get someone to send some to you)

True, true. But every time I would try to search for CAWs online, they would turn up dead ends, or they'd be formulas w/o pics and I wouldn't want to waste time making a wrestler that might turn out as shite. ;)

The only wrestler I make FOR SURE with every game is Chono. This year, though, with the online trading, I'm hoping to get good versions of Samoa Joe, Low Ki', Daniels, AJ Styles, Spanky, etc, as well.

caws.ws, if that's the only issue. Some of the models are shit, but there are a few gems.

New Q & A:

It's just a matter of days before SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 hits store shelves, and fans still have many questions riding in their heads. Though they know they will get the answers once they play the game themselves, they want these answer now, and who could blame them? The SmackDown! series has been by far one of the most successful franchises of all the wrestling games released.

As I promised last week, I sent in 10 questions to THQ, and they delivered. Hopefully these question will put some fans at rest for a while, and at the same time keep them wanting more from this highly anticipated game.

I would like to give my thanks to Jamie Jenson for accepting this interview and Bryan Williams for taking the time to answer these questions and I hope to do more interviews with them in the near future.

Once again I warn that this is GTAKING.com exclusive. If you wish to post this on your website, please e-mail me at [email protected]

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time in answering these questions. Very much appreciated.

GTAKING.com: Since created superstars will have voiceovers this year, is there a limit in making good/bad choices in season mode, or will it expand even more?

Bryan Williams: There have been no limitations placed upon created Superstars as a result of created Superstars being given a voice in WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006. We never look to add a feature at the expense of removing or limiting another feature.

GTAKING.com: General Manager Mode has been confirmed on top website IGN.com, can you tell us a bit more on what else can we do in this mode? Can divas be picked in the draft and involved in storylines for example?

Bryan Williams: Yes, Divas will be selectable in the draft and will play a prominent role in the mode. Success in GM Mode will be based on how well players handle the Superstars on their rosters, and that includes the lovely Divas. Divas will want and request shots at the Women’s Championship, and as the GM it will be the player’s responsibility to accommodate their requests.

GTAKING.com: There have been a few arguments on message boards about SvR2006's release date for the UK/US. Can you tell us when to expect the UK version and US version of SvR2006?

Bryan Williams: The US release date for WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 is November 14, and fans in the UK can look forward to picking up their copies on November 11.

GTAKING.com: I have also noticed in message boards that the fans want to create a lot of previous ECW/WCW legends/superstars. Will major parts (i.e. Stings face paint) be available in Create A Superstar?

Bryan Williams: While I’m unable to get into specifics, Create A Superstar will contain an inordinate amount of Superstar parts and designs.

GTAKING.com: As we all know, there are tons of WWE fans who love playing hardcore matches, but limits in previous years games didn't live up to their expectations. This year, what will we see new in hardcore matches? i.e. more weapons to choose from

Bryan Williams: WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 will certainly include new weapons. However, where those weapons appear in the game you’ll just have to wait and see for yourself.

GTAKING.com: So far we haven't seen much of the backstage. How much open area and different locations are we to expect?

Bryan Williams: The Bar Brawl is an all-new backstage area making its debut in WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006. Players will face off in a WWE-themed sports bar and utilize the surrounding environment as a weapon against their opponents. The Bar Brawl area, similar to the Parking Lot and Backstage areas that are also returning in WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006, will contain a multitude of contextual grapple attacks that can be used to punish opponents.

GTAKING.com: Since season mode is 2 full years to complete, how long until repetitive starts? i.e. Will season start all over again after 2 years, or will it continue on from where it finished?

Bryan Williams: Each individual season of SmackDown and RAW will be self-contained.

GTAKING.com: In last years version, Created Superstars who were champions would come out with the belt not looking fit around the waist, will the belts around the waist look much better on Created Superstars as it does on WWE Superstars?

Bryan Williams: Yes. The all-around quality of created Superstars has improved significantly in WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006, and that includes the appearance of any created Superstar wearing a Championship around his or her waist.

GTAKING.com: Will created PPV arenas be available for online play?

Bryan Williams: Yes. All of the offline PPV arenas will be available for online play.

GTAKING.com: Just how many of the WWE Superstars can be used in Season mode? Can all be used, or is it certain amounts that actually get TV time in the WWE?

Bryan Williams: A total of 32 Superstars, including three WWE Legends (Steve Austin, Mankind and Hulk Hogan), can be used in Season Mode.

GTAKING.com: Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time in answering my questions I appreciate it very much. If there is anything else you would like to say to the fans on SvR2006, please do so, I'll have no problem posting it.

Bryan Williams: I’d just like to thank the fans for their continued support of the series, and I hope they enjoy playing WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 as much as I enjoyed working on it. Thank you.

WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW will be released later this month.

Please. Back when I still owned my GBA, I had Fire Pro A. They give you something like 60 odd slots to create your own wrestler. I filled it up completely. It was to the point where I had to purchase a new FPA game off Ebay, so I could fill that one up with new wrestlers.

It was worth it. Nothing beats seeing your CAW of The Destroyer absolutely demolishing guys like Triple H.

How reliable is this Q&A? Only 32 wrestlers can participate in Season Mode?

No mention of expanding the good/bad choices, either, but at least they're not cutting them drastically enough for a mention.

Good to see the backstages are getting more interesting. I've done way too much on the hardcore stage in SvR.

I want a Bret Hart storyline, damnit.

Fairly reliable. They've done Q&As on the game before.

And the 32 Wrestlers thing (Wrestlers you can select for Season) is correct. As GamingRing revealed weeks ago that several lower card guys like The Bashams, Paul London and others I'm forgetting right now (as well as Ric Flair) cannot be taken thru the season mode.

Pretty sure it's a voice over thing (we ALL wanted those voice overs afterall) or something like that.

Very dissapointing... but the lack of HCTP type season mode freedom already killed the season mode for me anyway.

True about the HCTP point. Very true. I'm surprised that Flair cannot be taken through Season mode, though. How lame is that?

Ah well, I'm putting all of my eggs in the GM Mode basket, anyway. :P

We need a list of the superstars WITH season mode capability so that we can complain about them and pick wrestlers to swap them with.

If Hassan doesn't have one, I'm pissed. (Daivari too, but I'm not expecting much of him.)

Each roster has a maximum of 20 slots, but you aren't required to use that many; however, Yuke's producers told us it's a good idea to have at least 12 wrestlers in your stable. Unfortunately, it seems you can only use WWE superstars in this mode--no created wrestlers are allowed.

Daaaamn.

If you really want to lay down the gauntlet, you can even run an interference promotion on your opponent and have select members of your roster invade the other show in an all-out assault on their ratings.

That makes up for it.

Geeze, I must have skimmed past that "No CAWs line" while reading. It's a major downer...

But IGN did say "Created wrestlers can appear in the Free Agent pool (along with unselected and released WWE Superstars) and you can add whomever you wish from there as long you have room for them and can afford it."

SO maybe you just can't draft the CAWs or something. Let's hope that's the case...

EDIT: Gamespot edited the Story to read: "Each roster has a maximum of 20 slots, but you aren't required to use that many; however, Yuke's producers told us it's a good idea to have at least 12 wrestlers in your stable. You can even sign up created wrestlers as free agents on to your card--though they'll likely have a tough rode to travel in gaining the popularity of current WWE stars"

So CAWs can be used thankfully...

So your indy SD is going to make relatively about as much money as the indies, then.

Notes from the video review (pretty much a stripped-down version of the text review, but with match videos):

- starts out with the SD intro video, editor-in-chief Jeremy Dunham is talking, calls it the "ultimate wrestling game for this generation" and says it does what No Mercy did.

- goes on to talk about the momentum system and how you have to be mindful of what you're doing, otherwise the crowd doesn't care and you don't build your SD meter. If you don't do the right moves at the right time, the guy comes back and starts kicking your ass. (Video: Ric Flair vs HHH)

- next up is the stamina meter. Shows how much energy you have left, and your ability to do more spectacular/powerful moves drains your stamina. Acts like momentum in that if you don't watch out, your wrestler runs out of gas and your opponent has free rein.(Video: Hollywood and 80s Hogan and Orton in the Royal Rumble, Mankind runs in)

- talks about the reversal system, where you can do your defensive moves in a chain. (Video: Kurt Angle vs CAW 'Maniac' on the outside.) You can do up to three counters in a row. (Video: Mankind vs Undertaker on top of the cell)

- a 'power Irish whip' that acts like a Tekken throw. Press Triangle and Circle together and your opponent will fly over turnbuckle/ropes. (Video: 80s Hogan, Hollywood Hogan, Mankind and Orton in RR, Eugene runs in.)

- new sleeperhold system. Acts like the Submission B from SvR, where you give your opponent the three arm-lifts and he has to press X button when the marker enters the blue zone. If he escapes, they do the fight-back animation with the arms flailing and all the usual. (Video: Batista vs Orton, Batista has a reverse chinlock sleeper on, I think.)

- GM mode is brought up. Runs through the submenus on the main GM menu. They go into roster and centre on Eddie Guerrero, show status, records and bio. (Side note: Battle Creek, Michigan. Good times. Their SD has Snitsky traded.) Talks about how it's more text-based, so you can't watch promos or storylines - but you can play the matches you set up. Shows graph of fan support.

- Next up is season mode. A lot less open-ended than before. A 'lot better this way', because wrestlers are given better voices. Says it's probably going to get old after about the second season due to structure. You can only import one created character at a time. (Video: Big Show (with pipe) and Cena walk down to the ring, 'Maniac' and HHH go out from ring to meet them, get beat down. Cena enters ring, hits Flair with chain wrapped around his knuckles then chokes him using chain. Big Show chokeslams him over the ropes.)

- brings up new matches. Brings up Buried Alive and Bar-Room Brawl, says B-R B is a better version of the backstage brawls from SvR. (Video: Taker and Mankind on cell, both fall off.)

- Ends with a ring entrance by 'Maniac' Matt Franklin, which looks pretty good.
