The most hated heel and most loved face

Recommended Posts

Ive just been thinking about this, who is the most hated heel and most loved face in history, regardless of for which promotion they wrestled?

I would have to say as a heel, they dont come much badder than Big Van Vader. He used to put people in hospital just for fun. His victims include Sting, Mick Folely and Ron Simmons (who was badass in WCW during 1992/3). His moveset was wicked, including a Vader Splash, Moonsault and the very awesome Vader Bomb. Remember, he weighed between 400-450 pounds at the time. He broke jobbers backs for fun. He has had problems with the police in different countries. Hes a multi-time world champion on different continents. Harley Race, one of the dirtest wrestlers in the business was his manager. IMHO, he was the most dominant heel champion in WCW history. If you want to talk about the WWE dropping the ball, look no further than Vader.

For a face, I think the eternal face is Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat. I mean, did this guy ever play a heel? Did he ever do something remotely heelish. Hell, even nowdays, hes still portrayed as a face, such as in RoH. Very proficient technically, fans loved him, since he did no wrong. I think this love from the fans was supported cause he could mat wrestle, proven in classics such as his series of matches with Ric Flair (whom the fans used to love to hate around that time) and his WMIII match with 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. Its a shame that there were so many top faces at the time, since he had no chance at being WWE Champion what with Hogan, and a long-term NWA or WCW Champion given the dominance of people like Flair and Sting. Misused in many promotions IMHO.

I'd have to say Hogan was one of the best loved faces, and quite possibly the most hated heel during various parts of his career.

I'd think the long list of guys that were stabbed by fans or caused riots would be considered more hated than Vader.

I don't think you can consider Vader a "hated" heel because fans loved him...

Not hated in that sense. I used the words hated and loved as to kind of stress the fact that that was the role the wrestler normally played. Supposed baddest and goodest, no thats not right, the latter sounds ghey and the former sounds like which heel sucked the most.

Does anybody get what Im trying to say though? They played heels and faces really well which got 'hate' or 'love' and they didnt do really well when they turned. Something like that is what im trying to stir into a discussion.

For a hated heel, Shane Douglas was pretty hated after the Pitbull I/broken neck angle where Douglas shook Pitbull I's halo around like a rag doll. Even the jaded, smart ECW Philly crowd was fixing to kill Douglas.

I'm not sure if anyone checked out early/mid nineties AAA Lucha, but Los Gringos Locos (Eddy Guerrero, Konnan, Art Barr) were some of the biggest heat drawing bastards I've ever seen.

Zyn, when I read your first post, what came to my mind was guys you just plain despise...I think HHH has returned to that spot, whether it's because his character is just evil or because we're tired of seeing him all the time, he's is just plain despised...I think of X-Pac and his infamous "X-Pac Heat", which I think Edge is dangerously near...Vader, Austin in 96/97, HHH in 2000/2001 are guys people loved regardless of how evil they tried to act...Hassan is a guy people just plain hate, I don't think it's just yet a sense of "i'm tired of seeing this guy", I think he's played his ridiculous gimmick well enough to where you hate the character itself more than the man playing him simply because he's the heel...

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Fritz Von Erich as one of the most hated (back when he was a Nazi heel). His name was the first that came to mind when I read this topic.

Ironically, he became one of the bigger faces in WCCW in Texas later on in his career.

Same with Baron Von Raschke, Matt ... plus, the Baron kept using the goosestep as a prelude to the claw ... talk about an act that should have gotten huge heel heat but kept on getting the face pops.

Andy Kaufman.
That's not fair, Milky ... he only made the idiots in Memphis hate him. Having to count to 10 gets heel heat in Memphis.

Andy Kaufman.

Nah. I loved the Lawler/Kaufman fued and have pretty much all of it on tape, but he wasn't that good compared to most top heels. He got over by having a big mouth and being a pussy. That gimmick had already been done to death by the time he started.

My viewing of wrestling primarily dates back to the mid 80's:

Most Loved - Easily Hogan 1984-1991, followed very closely by Stone Cold Steve Austin

Most Hated - For that one night, BATB 1996, Hulk Hogan. People wanted his head on a stick for that heel turn. That was some insane heel heat.

Rock ranks up there in both categories. Hell he was probably most over as a face when he was actually a heel.

Ric Flair is great at both roles.

I agree on Hogan At BATB. Hogan was pretty well hated by the fans during the nWo days, though soon enough the nWo was over as cool heels so they got face heat, but Hogan seemed to remain being hated.

Surprised no one mentioned Bruno Sammartino, he was really loved as the blue color ethnic character, especially in the NY area. But Hogan transcended it all in the 80s.

Rock after he won his first WWF title and joined up with Vince, the next night on RAW he got one of the biggest heel reactions ever. You can tell the fans were super pissed cuz they wanted to cheer him so much. But it didnt last and the people started loving him again, until they finally had to turn him.

Remember Goldusts initial run, the people really hated him as he pushed the whole "gay" gimmick to the limits.

Hogan is probably number one for most loved face

Andre is a good choice. The heat he got at Wm 3 was pretty epic. You gotta love him smiling and waving like nothing was wrong as they threw trash at him and Heenan while they were riding in the cart.

Guys this is an easy one:

Hulk Hogan by a landside from 1984-1995 Hogan again fron 2002-currently, no one is more beloved than this guy

Most hated Heel: Easily Hogan, he drew more MOney as a heel main-eventer than any other main-event heel headlining-

What makes a better heel than the most beloved guy turning his back on his fans?

Art Barr was a fuckin' great heel, and what a frog splash!

Steamboat!?

Yeah, so loved by the fans he gets booed in his series with Flair even though he's a face. Yes, I know it's against Flair so it's not exactly a normal wrestler he's working with, but if he really was the most loved face then he wouldn't have gotten booed against anyone.

Remember, Gorgeous George started the whole ultimate heel act. His elaborate enterances and stalling were the precursor to todays heel, and caused a riot on more than one occassion.

And remember, different territories aren't as violent as others (Mexico, Puerto Rico) many great heels have never worked there.
