GTA San Andreas forced to change game rating

Recommended Posts

Guest MikeSC

Ripper, if the movie cut the porn scene out and some enterprising projectionist at some small movie theatre in the boonies decided to add it back in --- would it make sense to give that movie an NC-17?

Rockstar did not have the scene immediately available and did not mention its existence as they did not want people to search for it. Some desperate little horndog did so and found it.

But Rockstar did remove the scene. You can look on almost any CD a game comes on and find stuff that was not in the game.

What rating did Playboy Mansion get?

M.

in an article I read, Wal-Mart is taking all returns on it, opened or unopened, for full refund.

Matt Young: sounds like a good opportunity to exploit them.

No seriously, how can anyone be on Rockstars side here and say this is bullshit.  IF this was a movie and they spliced in hardcore porn in the middle of the film for its theatrical released but didn't have it there for the MPAA ratings board, it would be wrong and this is too.

Rockstar knew they couldn't display explicit sex in the game and get a MA rating which, despite it only being a years difference between buying age, makes a huge difference in who carrys it.  So they hid it in the game trying to be funny.  Then LIED and said it was a mod that users made up until it got found in the console games too.  Fuck them.  They screwed themselves.

Explicit sex my ass. More like simulated or assumed sex. Not only is it just two polygon characters bashing up against eachother but CJ is FULLY CLOTHED in the scene.

So basically because one of the characters had his polygon dick through a pant whole while the other polygon character was giving him head, Its okay?

Ripper- knows that it is possibel to have sex without taking your pants off.

Except it's not acessable normally in any way. You've got to download the mod/save for it..

Mod is the wrong word. you don't have to modify anything. You just need to get access to a completely intact part of the game.

I didn't know the difference between an R rating and a porn movie was seeing the guy's wang, either.

Yet there's "couples" porn out there that doesn't show any penetration or wang. It doesn't get an R, vivi.

A] Show me the polygon dick and I'll change my tune. I sure as hell didn't see one.

B] If you don't know the difference between explicit and implied, than I have nothing else to say.

Jesus christ, why do I bother? I didn't say a thing about his penis. I said it wasn't EXPLICIT SEX.

Have you ever seen the movie Crash [mid-90's with David Spader]? There's IMPLIED sex in that, both people are completely nude, and even that's not rated Adults Only.

God of War's sex scenes were implied. This is explicit. Can you agree that showing an uncut sex scene from Basic Instict doesn't count as explicit sex? They didn't imply that they had sex with Sharon Stones character on top, they displayed it. Now, there was no penis visable at all, but that is EXPLICIT sex displayed in a film. It wasn't actual sex, but explicit...the same thing is here.

There is no implying that she was giving him head when she was on her knees with her head bobbing up and down and him throwin his head back. There was nothing implied about him fucking her. Penis be damned, they hid explicit sex in a video game, and for that they should suffer the consiquences that come with it. The rest of those companys that have realeased AO games made no secret of what they were selling, and Rockstar should own up to what they did.

Yes, because defending government intrusion is a better alternative.

Rockstar removed the content. How in the heck are the console games even impacted as I was unaware that THEY can unlock that footage? If the footage can't be reached in the game --- why in the world is the console title's rating changed?

I think you can on the consoles with one of those Gameshark cheat devices.

They've already sold 5 million copies of the game, so this shouldn't hit them in the pocketbook very much. I doubt if they're ordered to recall every copy they've sold they would get even a 25% return.

So, because with an outside peripheral, one MIGHT be able to access something --- it does seem a little odd to punish the manufacturers, when they clearly intended for it to not be accessible and was difficult to remove.

Agreed with Ripper, which doesn't happen often. Plus, they gave the whole business a black eye and turned those who are trying to advance their political careers onto paying attention to this age-old "culture war" issue again. And this is an industry which doesn't have any lobbyists, so it just takes it's lumps and tries to make do with what there is.

Take2 is reporting nearly $200 million in lost sales and will take a hit this quarter. You know SOMEBODY at RS North is fired.

Lastly, all this bitchin' and moaning about God of War: The ESRB rating box on the back of GoW mentions Nudity and Sexual Themes. GTA:SA didn't have anything like this, because ESRB didn't know (the publisher sends a tape of the most objectionable elements, and RS seemed to take the position all along that this stuff was "gone" while still sneaking it in.) The back of the San Andreas box lists only Language, Drug Use, and Violence.

So yes, ESRB was basically lied to, and did what they had to do to get the politicos off their back. Because of precedent, any future sequences like God of War may get AOs instead of Ms in the future after this whole publicity stunt. And if that's the case, then you can thank Rockstar AGAIN for lowering the tolerance of sex in M-rated games.

These are no amateur programmers that just decided to print 15 million copies of secret code believing that nobody would ever see it. They don't have much sense, but they're not STUPID. They put it in there as an "easter egg" for the die-hard fans to find, and they didn't tell the ratings board and now everyone is getting bit in the ass.

Thanks, ya dumbasses.

Rockstar needs to raise the bar in the next game. If they replicate the mini-game, but without any way of seeing the "action" who is going to care? Nobody.

Utilizing the PS3, Grand Theft Auto Tokyo should be even better. However, instead of boring ol' consensual sex, you'll be able to molest high school girls on subways and violently rape women (off screen of course).

It'll do quadruple the sales in Japan, at least.

You'll want to avoid black women at first though, because they'll just laugh at you. Oh, Lockstall and you hirarious laciar humah! Over 50 sexual perversions can be added to the game with online expans--er, "mods."

There will be a way to launch a nuclear strike and annihilate the entire Nagasaki region where a rival crime organization will be, but nobody will pay any attention to that.

For those interested, here is the sex scene.........

http://www.uselessjunk.com/modules.php?nam...rder=0&thold=-1

Wow, that was it. Other than the blowjob, I can hardly see what's so shocking. Plus, the dialogue was hilarious in how bad it was. "I ain't insecure, but tell me I'm the greatest!"

Like I said eariler, Rockstar fucked up, thats all there is to it. If Rockstar had either told the ESRB rating board about it in the first place or just took it out of the game, none of this bullshit would have happen. It'll hurt Rockstar in the long run, espically now since the game just released on the Xbox and PC. Rockstar just basically fucked a lot of things up now. The ESRB will now be harder on the rating system, Rockstar just gave the whole video game industry a black eye, and wonder what happen to the people who had stock with Rockstar. Rockstar just royally screwed things up for a lot of people right now. Fuck them.

If anything they should have taken the route that DVDs do, just say that "extras" and "easter eggs" are unrated.

That's a bullshit response, though, because then you could have a Disney game where Mickey and Minnie start fucking in bed if you enter a GameShark code and call it an easter egg. The reason DVDs go that route is either because it's a PG-13 movie and the director said "fuck" during the commentary, OR it has unreleased scenes which were never judged by MPAA. Neither of those two situations exist in a game.

The guy from Penny Arcade put it better than I could:

It's unfortunate that in order to defend videogames, it usually means you're defending Rockstar specifically.

Parents usually receive the brunt of the gamer assault, and their responsibility is real, but numerically they're buying the Goddamn things. This Hot Coffee "mod" - which by now people who are not gamers or politicians know about - essentially means that publishers, developers, and parents aren't at parity, because they're apparently willing to sneak this shit into games under cover of night and get rated on the marginally cleaner subset. It's not "fair play." The code is in there, and even if you have to perform some kind of obscure dance to bring it to the fore, that's an academic matter when a game - or an entire medium - becomes ordnance in the culture war.

The ESRB is suggesting that they may change the rating of the game to Adults Only, a category that by their own definition should see a great deal more use in a retail environment. This is great. Look at the descriptions for these.

MATURE Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.

Or, as the rest of our culture calls it, "Rated R." Check out AO.

ADULTS ONLY Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.

This can't seriously be their distinction. The scenes are longer? I played Resident Evil 4 nearly 26 hours, all told. I'm going to say that maybe nineteen hours of it was spent looking down the iron sights at humanoids. The reality is that once a person is 18, a violent videogame is fairly minor in the spectrum of "adult" content available to that person. Looking over my collection, if the duration of the violence is the distinguishing factor, I'm trying to figure out what purpose Mature serves other than to remove the stigma from otherwise "adult" content and grease the wheels at retail.

He's got a point. If Manhunt wasn't "prolonged scenes of intense violence" then I don't know what is.

If sales of this game don't soar, I'll be shocked. I don't feel sorry for Rock Star games at all. Everyone's going to try to get a copy of this now. This is one case where bad publicity works to the manufacturer's favor.

Look at how much retailers are charging now:

LOL, I had completely forgotten about those topics until you mentioned that. I have a job interview tomorrow, so if that goes well, maybe I won't need to work the system in the future. :P

OR

there is a way to access this in the game. In all liklihood, there is a way to access it in the game. This is a huge game and it has probably not been found yet, but somewhere on that huge digital world, there is PROBABLY a way to access in the game. The inclusion of this, a scene that they never could have possibly believed would have gotten them anything but a AO rating was even produced, animated, and had voice acting done for was a hidden "extra" in the game.

BUT, the company has made a good faith effort to keep the code hidden. They've not told anybody (thus, "cheat" magazines and the like don't have the code for it).

And this is a whole lot of outrage over nothing. NARC was considerably more offensive. Ditto Manhunt. This gets the heat because people actually bought this game.

Manhunt and Narc put what was in the game out there for them to see and allowed it to be rated accordingly. Its all about concealing sections of the game because they knew the reprecussions.

And maybe its just me knowing people that have worked in the video game industry, but the hot coffee mod was more than likely made by someone that worked on the game.

Hate to dig up old threads but I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for so..

Does San Andreas for PS2 have any long term value? Like whatever it's going for now, is it all down hill from here considering the next gen is coming out and millions of people are going to be selling this game anyway? Just wanted to know so I can decide on whether or not I should sell, because I haven't played it in a while and might as well get the most value out of it, unless of course it'll be worth more later on.

If you don't have the decaf version of San Andreas, then it might be worth more money than the aforementioned version down the line, since someone may want to dig up some video game history by finding that version of the game. Otherwise, I'd sell.

There's too many copies floating around for it to be worth anything special. It would take like 15 years for it to be uncommon.
