This is the first time though that the British police have had a shoot to kill policy, and the first time they use it they get the wrong man. That has to be a nightmare scenario for the force, though being so close to the London bombings they'll probably get a little bit of slack. I wonder why he was running though, i'd guess it was because the officers were plain clothes and he thought there was something fishey. Still, don't thtink the police had any other choice, but next time they'll have to be damn sure they get the right guy.

The shooting of the wrong person is bad for two reasons. Firstly a innocent life has been taken, but it could also stop officers from shooting a real terrorist because they fear it may be the wrong person, and in the split second they take to make that decision the terroirst may escape, or even worse, set off an explosive.

I can understand why the guy ran, which is exactly why he shouldn't have. In this very agitated state cops tend to be a tad trigger-happy and this guy should've had the foresight to know that if he was going to run then there's a good chance that he'll be shot at.

Completely independent of that statement, Invader3k comes across as a fascist dumbshit that just likes seeing people get shot by uninformed triggerhappy jackoffs with badges.

"Agent of Oblivion"...what were they supposed to do? Let the guy run away since he didn't want to be bothered to stop? Or were they supposed to merely restrain him, at the risk of him blowing himself up (yes, I know, he didn't have a bomb, but they thought he did, with good reason)?

It's a shame the guy got killed, but the police (in both Britain and the US) have to be tough against terrorism. I guess you would rather have seen them take the risk of having more innocent people get murdered.

Your statement calling the police "uninformed triggerhappy jackoffs with badges" makes me feel that you have a disdain for law enforcement that goes beyond this discussion, but that's your own issue.

To put it bluntly, I'd rather deal with a run of the mill triggerhappy jackoff than one with a badge. And what was the good reason? He ran? He looked shifty?

He ran and was wearing a long coat. They figured he was concealing a bomb. I believe he also ran out of an apartment building they were searching.

All the details are on the various news sites like www.drudgereport.com, etc.

Agent, they told him to stop. He ran. He appeared to fit the profile of the terrorists they were after. So they shot.

Turns out he did not have a visa, that's why he ran.

I can't exactly build up righteous rage at the police because they did their job, he was a dipshit.

But then again, you seem to think that they should've know, or been more cautious. Hindsight affords a luxury the present moment does not.

I'm just not in favor of the police being given carte blanche to blast people with total impunity if they say the perpetrator was a "terrorist."

And drudge? c'mon now fella.

This is what's nice about US police now being able to use tasers instead of deadly force. The downside is that they practically need another, less painful weapon since everything coming towards them is a taser suspect. The news last night reported something about police tasering a pregnant teenager who was coming after them with a knife.

While I respect the police force's wish to be able to go home that night and see their family, aren't people who are trained in disarming someone doing stuff like this a little extreme?

Why is everyone in favor of being soft on criminals these days? Crime deserves punishment. If you're running at a cop with a knife, anything less than them shooting you dead should be considered merciful.

The thing is, British cops have tasers too and in the latest arrests today, it seems they did use a stun taser on one of the criminals. I would imagine a taser wouldn't solve the problem of 'is he wearing a bomb' though, because they only stun temporarily, so they in theory could recover and set-off the bomb before it can be disabled.

If I ever don't like someone, I'll just say they look suspicious and that I'm tough on terrorism, right before shooting them.

Well, unless you're a cop or in the army, I'm sure nobody'd mind when you get locked up.

Okay, I'll get a badge too.

That's not what police officers are taught.  They're taught to aim for center mass, and to basically unload into the perp.

Ever notice how often when there is a shooting by the police, the 'victim' usually has multiple gunshot wounds?  It's because if the situation has degraded to the point where deadly force is necessary, than the cop is going to go all the way with it.

Right, I just thought a body shot would increase the chance of setting off any device that the suspect could be carrying.

Plain-clothed police officers, by the way. These men weren't in uniform with shiny badges or hats or anything.

What would you do if a few guys packing heat ran up to you screaming, saying they were "police"?

Speaking as someone who has felt both, the stun gun is much more preferable to mace. Fuck chemical deterrents. That shit's a nightmare.

It depends on the situation. If it was some kind of freakish huge guy with a knife, I'd understand, but if it was a stoned out of the mind teenager who can barely keep himself upright, or a woman carrying another baby, then they need to be careful.

These are police. Their goal is supposed to be justice, not killing people for threatening behavior. Plus the drug war has gone out of control in this country, a few years ago there was a story about a DEA agent of all people shooting a drugged-out teenager who was so far gone that he was running naked in the street.

You want people who are trained to kill at the first sight of something gone wrong? That's what MILITARY is for.
