Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2005 I just got back from the footy tonight and a thought hit me, is there a more exciting game in the world then Aussie Rules. It has speed, excitment, phyiscality and skill. Every game I go to I leave with a headache because I scream my lungs out due to the pace and I think that no game in the world could rival it. What do you guys think?
Positively Kanyon 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 Fuck yeah! I love AFL here in Australia... I just recently returned from a 2 month trip to the United States and Europe and I absolutely missed my football! It is a fast, intense sport... Nothing matches it in the world! GO LIONS! tommytomlin 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 Rugby League! AFL is too messy for me, same with Union. I like League because it's rigid, it's all about busting an inpenetrable line. Seeing two big forwards charge at each other, or Joey Johns kick a pinpoint cross-field bomb to his wingers is sporting magic. I appreciate the athleticism in AFL, but due to my Sydney upbringing I can't really get into it. And there are way too many cheap shots!
Guest The Iron Yuppie Report post Posted August 1, 2005 I can't choose between rugby league and AFL. Rugby League is what I was brought up on (being a Queenslander), but I have also followed AFL since the mid-90s (with AFL being the sport that has brought more success for my teams - Brisbane in the AFL; Brisbane & Nth Qld in the NRL - in recent years). With the success of the Brisbane Lions, it has really established a fan-base here. I tend to think the Swans would need similar success for AFL to really become a force in the Sydney market, comparable to NRL, the way it is here. With AFL, I can't understand how it earned the reputation in the northern states of being weak in comparison to League/Union, and just aerial pingpong and little else. Hopefully the Lions get their act together (missing Akermanis, and Brown's injury cost them against the Bulldogs, and almost cost them against Essondon) to make an impact in the finals. Though, realistically, it's West Coast's permiership to lose.
Ced 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 America needs more exposure to rugby and Aussie Rules. I watched both of them during my trip to southeast Asia a few years back and loved it despite my limited knowledge of the rules. You'd think that the nearly non-stop action and physical play would make it a hit over here.
Adam 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 Aussie Rules is more exciting than League simply because of the high flying and the athleticism. If you like sheer power, strength and force, then League is for you. I can watch League quite comfortably, but I LOVE Aussie Rules. Incredible action, amazing athleticism and great endurace shown by the top players such as Ling, Judd, Ablett, Cousins, Cooney, and Akermanis.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 I used to play Rugby and I loved it but I've never seen Aussie Rules. I'll have to check it out. Is it funner to play than Rugby?
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 Aussie Rules is the bomb, though I have to agree about the cheap shots. I have been into it since I discovered it back in 1982... I never pass up a chance to watch it, though I can never catch it. FSN doesn't have it on consistently, though ESPN was no better back in the day.

Run them off their feet, win the center clearences and disrupt the delivery to Brown (It also helped that Brian Harris has grown to the point where he can take him). This game at the 'G this Saturday will be a good barrometer for both the Bulldogs and the Eagles. For the Doggies it will show if we can match it with the big boys and possibly make a run at September action, and for the Eagles it will be their last match against a real quality outfit on the ground they will need to play on in the Grand Final. I was at the Collingwood game in Round 9, and they did not play that ground very well. Collingwood chased them all day and if we can do the same thing then it is very possible that the Doggies can pull off a great win. I used to play Rugby and I loved it but I've never seen Aussie Rules. I'll have to check it out. Is it funner to play than Rugby? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, it is way more enjoyable to play then rugby. It takes a bit more endurence to run out the full 100 minutes. On a side note, what do you guys think about the Chris Tarrant incident on the weekend. I was at that game and the way he was being held was absolutly ridiculous. Even though he is a crack head, the umpires were shocking and should not do another game for the rest of the year. If I were him I woulda had a swing at Carr because when it gets to that point enough is enough.
Adam 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 His hands are tied. If the umps are too stupid to see him being held, then he can't do a thing. The interpretation of the rules this year has been woeful, turning it into a girls game. Remember the good old days where you could accidentally belt someone and get off with a fine? Or when you could swear until you were blue in the face at the Umpire and he'd just laugh at you, because you'd both be having a beer after the game? Good old days. Good old days. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Archer had it right in his weekly article in the Hearld Sun here in Melbourne. Adrian Anderson was on white Line Fever last night and you could tell that he had no idea what it would be like to be a player in our game. He said he disagreed with Chubbs because it gave the game a bad image and that the umpires shouldn't have to deal with it, yet in the same show they had the footage of Scott McLaren telling a Melbourne player not to worry about Luke Ball making the distance from 55 meters out. I reckon if the umpires can say shit like that about players, they should have to cop their abuse on the chin. And don' get me started on the new tribunal this year. It is clear that the person who set it up obviously wanted to be a barrister but wasn't good enough to cut it.
