College Football is almost back

Recommended Posts

Listening to my friends that go to RU, you'd think they were doing something other than going 4-7 and losing to D-IAA teams.

It just shows how bad that school is when they can't keep any prospects from staying instate. Penn State kicks their ass all the time when recruiting South Jersey, and Virginia is doing a number on them now, pulling Wali Lundy out of Delran among others.

New Jersey has become one of UVA's huge recruiting spots. Still can't touch much of that Florida talent, but NJ is a nice little hotbed with a whole lot of good players for the taking.

I'm still surprised anyone coming out of Florida goes anywhere but the big 3 schools down there.

Dama, I dunno about that. I thought FSU was pretty lame in 2000 and had no business even BEING in the title game. In fact I thought they'd get beat worse than 13-2.

Was 2000 the year when Weinke threw 6 INTs vs. NC St.?

Michigan was pretty legit in 97 but my god Tennessee was one of the luckiest teams I've ever seen in 1998. From winning at Syracuse on a last second FG to Clint Stoerner inexplicably placing the ball on the turf for UT to scoop up they just had an amazingly lucky as hell season.

That said, Ohio St. in 2002....now that's the luckiest team ever.

Still though nobody gave OU a shot against FSU. That was my point. Everyone thought they were going to get blown out and that Miami and FSU were going to split the national title.

Hey Bobby Bowden went to 3 title games in a row and won 1 out of 3.....OU can win one this year!

The thing that sucks about losing the last 2 title games is that everyone forgets we won one in 2000. Everyone in Oklahoma is like "Man I hate Stoops. He can't win the big one!" And I'm like "Dude he's 3-3 in bowls. He won 3 bowls in a row including a national title and the Rose Bowl....what is this about the big one?"

Of the schools mentioned, personally I'd have picked OU, since I know I'd come in with a good coach and a winning tradition. However would their offense fit my talents is an entirely different question...

I thought Rolle was a defensive player.

OU typically plays man coverage where you get the reciever alone down field and make the pick or murder his ass.

Our players were fit for that and Bo Pelini came in and changed it to a finesse zone where if the pass is within 10 yards of the line you wait 2 yards out then run up and make the tackle instead of being aggressive. Our players were not fit for that kind of defense.

Now with Bobby Jack Wright we're going back to aggressive "beat the shit out of the reciever off of the line and then murder his ass if he catches the ball" defense.

I don't recall anyone saying FSU was going to beat OU in 2000. In fact I remember it being a total joke that FSU was even IN that game. Mind you, not as big of a joke as it was when they played Tennessee for the title (now that was a fucking farce), but close.

FSU is bar none the most perennially overrated team. They mostly beat up on a shitty ACC and now that the league is better I doubt they'll win it much again under Bowden.

What happened to get them in against Tennessee?

And yeah they were heavily favored over OU. I have the DVD of the entire game. The commentators before the game went on about how OU was unrespected and the underdog and they didn't think they had much of a chance.

Of course you got little Bowden going "If FSU plays their best tonight then OU has no chance."

FSU was ranked at #4 in 1998 in the final week of the year. UCLA was #2 and Kansas State was #3 in the last weekend, with UCLA having to play a makeup game against Miami due to Hurricane Georges postponing their original game date and Kansas State had to play Texas A&M in the Big XII title game.

UCLA ends up laying a complete egg against Miami and losing, then Kansas State choked against A&M in the Big XII title game, leaving the door open for FSU. Of course Ohio State did complain about the BCS since they were 10-1 as well and their loss to Michigan State wasn't as bad as FSU's loss to NC State was, OSU lost in the last seconds and FSU got dominated by NC State.

Has Tennessee won any other national titles other than the one in 1998?

READ MY SIG

Tennessee has won six national titles, although the last one before 1998 was 1951.

Tennessee has won 13 SEC Championships, which is second only to Bama.

Tennessee is EASILY the second best SEC team of all time to Bama.

Tennessee is also the winningest program in the country over the past 75 years.

Tennessee is second all-time in bowl appearances and victories.

Some of you underrate the Big Orange Tradition.

It's kinda easy to underrate UT's accomplishments when they have All-World QB Peyton Manning STILL can't beat Florida...

Seriously, UT wins a lot but sometimes they don't play up to the level of talent they have at their disposal.

This wasn't a problem in 1998 when Tee Martin and company put that championship run together, but they've had a problem with coasting at times.

You may want to put the blame on Darth Visor (Steve Spurrier), though, because Florida's success made Tennessee seem like the SEC East's B-squad for almost 10 years, as it took about 8 years since the SEC title game began before a team OTHER than Florida won the East.

Not quite. UCLA was up big in that game, and even the announcers wrote off Miami. Miami had to pull off a pretty decent comeback to win, aided by UCLA's horrendous defense.

Speaking of Miami....everyone talks about Texas losing 5 straight to OU but hasn't FSU lost 6 straight to Miami?

Yeah, but I think a lot of *those* losses were by the famous Wide Left and Wide Right missed field goals for a 1-point to 3-point loss.

Texas's losses, though, tended to be more of the "ass-rape" variety.

IIRC wasn't there a controversial call that set up Miami's final TD drive? I try to block the game out of my head but I remember some kind of call. Also UCLA came very close to scoring on the final possession but wound up short.

Of course, if UCLA doesn't give up 300 yards to Edgerrin James we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Awww Google:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/.../05/ucla_miami/

The Bruins went ahead 45-35 with 6:54 left on McNown's 1-yard run, but then Miami took control. Covington threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Mondriel Fulcher with 6:08 and the Hurricanes' Delvin Brown recovered a questionable fumble by Melsby after a 30-yard gain and Miami was back in business. A replay appeared to show that Melsby's knee was on the ground before the ball came loose.

Covington completed passes for 9 and 19 yards to Andre King and then hit Nick Williams for 14 yards to the UCLA 1. On the next play, James capped his brilliant day with a 1-yard run.

As an OSU fan, I will be biased, but I will not say that 2002 team was that lucky. Even though they did have seven (I believe) games where they won by a TD or less, most of their games were low scoring and the defense kept them in, so I would not call that luck.

Although it is incredibly trivial at the moment, it just dawned on me that they'll probably have to move the Sugar Bowl this year to a different site with the damage done to the Superdome.

So I heard Trev Alberts said that Adrian Peterson would be "this year's Darren Sproles" and then Chris Fowler ran to AD's rescue.

Alberts talks out of both sides of his ass a lot.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the Party Hard video.

I did get this though:

http://www.the-smartass.com/LAVideos-Flash.htm

If you guys want to see it you can message me and I'll send it to you. Like even if you hate OU but like football and Andrew WK it's good to watch.

*EDIT* The 2002 "Let's Play" video is set to Party Hard but it's not quite as cool as the 2003 one.

When I am speaking of myself, I'm thinking of myself as a QB/WR, not a defensive player.

Well the season will be starting soon, we'll see if Mack Brown will follow the path this year to becoming the next John Cooper...

Doesn't matter to me, all I want is 10-0 Ohio State going to 10-0 Michigan in November for a spot in the Rose Bowl...
