Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted August 6, 2005 I wasn't sure where to start this topic, whether it be here, Computers & Technology, or even in General Chat, but I figured since this folder gets more traffic, and most of you seem to be the "underground indie" types that know of the alternatives, recommend me some iPod alternatives. I find the thing to be ridiculously expensive for its basic function(s), and I know that there are some really good alternatives out there, like creative/nomad's one, but there has to be more than that. Any suggestions?
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2005 No, it really is the best hard-drive based mp3 player. I mean, you can get a Creative player for much cheaper, but you get what you pay for. It's much larger than the iPod, the interface is awkward, and the process of organizing your music and transferring it is more difficult than it should be (unless newer ones have started to let you use iTunes, which I doubt). How much space are you looking for? There's a similar thread to this in the Computers folder.
UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2005 You should really just go looking around on Amazon...there's a ton of different ones out there but I really couldn't comment on them because I've only tried iPod and Creative Zen(which is nice but I like ipod a little better)
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2005 I much prefer my Nomad Zen to the iPod I used to have. However, I would very, very, very strongly reccomend getting an iRiver. They rule.
Special K 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2005 Rio's players are very small, hold a lot of data (he one I've seen holds 5 gigs), and apparently have a longer battery life. And are cheaper. I dunno how their interface compares, though.
bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 First of all, Creative is not a good alternative, they are a crap company. For every success story you'll find two "something went wrong with mine" stories. I dont know much about Rio's functionality, only that the physical interface sucks (ie the buttons, design, browsing/scrolling functions). Look at iRiver if you really want an alternative (though I like the ipod just fine).
MrRant 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 There are some programs that you can get to transfer files to your Zen that I can't remember that is supposed to be a lot better.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 5 gigs? Not good enough. Hell, its getting to the point where 30 might not be enough for me. I made a decision to wait for awhile until the prices come down further... I have a CD player that plays MP3s, so I can take a good chunk of my music to work with me, thanks to an FM transmitter (which now that I think about it, has to be replaced, but for 15 bucks it wasn;t bad). Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 Does the IPOD work on a rechargable battery? or do you keep having to buy a new one?
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 Rechargeable. It's a lithium-ion one. There was some trouble with batteries losing their charge too quickly about 2 years ago, but it seems to have been fixed now. Using the equalizer, my new iPod comfortably gets about 12 hours a charge, a little less if I use the backlight, and a little more if I don't use the EQ.
