Guest JMA Report post Posted August 9, 2005 It's gonna be a while. It'll air on Thursdays starting Oct. 20th. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They could bring a lot of viewers in if they promote the show non-stop until then.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 I have plenty of gripes about AS' programming schedule, but I love my ATHF (even the reruns over and over again), Samurai Champloo, Venture Bros (getting renewed made me happy) and RC. Count me among the Super Milk-Chan fans, too. Although lately...12 Oz. Mouse, Tom, and Squidbillies? Boondocks getting a show? Stroker and Hoop I hated but saw some potential there, at least. Perfect Hair Forever was great in its original ep, so I'm looking forward to it. Evangelion...meh...owned the DVDs, saw both movies, I'm not thrilled with the prospect of seeing in on TV after seeing it in DVD-quality, even if I had any desire to watch it again. Guest JMA Report post Posted August 9, 2005 I like all the Lupin series, but I just can't stand the dub shown on Adult Swim. I'm not one of those "all dubs suck" anime fans either. I just hate when 21st century American pop-culture is shoe-horned into a very old anime series--I don't want to hear references to Britney Spears and Shaq in an anime series. Then again, I've always been a fan of older pop-culture. I'm by no means a fanatical sub purist either, but man, do I hate the Adult Swim Lupin. I've actually never even seen the original, but I'd probably like it more for the reason you stated. In these last five or so years of greatly improved dubbing, if there was ever still an argument for subs, this Lupin is it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think Case Closed may have failed for many of the same reasons the Lupin dub did. Not only did they change the name of the show itself (which wasn't their fault), but they also changed the names of the characters, pissing off the purists. The idea was a hard-sell in the U.S. anyway.

Show was still pretty decent besides, though.

Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Count me among the Super Milk-Chan fans, too. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thank God I finally found another fan. I though I was the only one on Earth. I think one of the reasons it failed on Adult Swim is because some of the Comedy fans wouldn't give it a chance because it was an anime, and some of the anime fans didn't like it because it was a comedy, and not a fantasy/sci-fi/action/drama type show that people usually think of when they think of anime. Oh well, at least I can get it on DVD. Also, I've seen Evangelion, and I hated it.

Guest JMA Report post Posted August 9, 2005 As for Super Milk Chan and Tom Goes to the Mayor, I don't think they're nearly as bad as a lot of people say. SMC was actually pretty good, and even TGttM has some funny moments. Then again, I do like most of the shows Adult Swim features. I think the only show I couldn't stand to watch was The Ripping Friends."
El Psycho Diablo 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Eva was..okay, but nothing I'd hype as "the greatest anime ever". The first half was a cliche "monster of the week" show with a few cool moments every so often, and the last half felt like somebody started reading a psychology textbook. Plus, all the Christianity references were just thrown in "because they looked cool". No joke, there's an interview around somewhere that says precisely that. Parts of the show (the ending, especially) bear a resemblance to Yoshiyuki Tomino's (Known for the original Gundam, among others) Legendary Giant Ideon. Not saying it's bad, but it's just made out to be this great earth-shaking show, and for me, it isn't. As for the topic..what gives the guys who made Van Wilder room to say anything? Futurama's far better than any of their recent efforts..

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 The first half was a cliche "monster of the week" show with a few cool moments every so often, and the last half felt like somebody started reading a psychology textbook. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's supposed to be that way. All the more reason to screw with your head. Thank God I finally found another fan. I though I was the only one on Earth. Oh well, at least I can get it on DVD. Good point. Too bad, too, because it was along the lines as the bizaare American comedy like ATHF. However, people might have also thought it was repetitive (because of the landlord in every ep, much of the same segments cropping up), and ignored some of the oddball theme shows. How many eps on DVD (and per DVD)?
Special K 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Evangelion has for the most part hugely unsympathetic characters, and for its weirdness and open-endedness, doesn't really succeed in evoking a strong visceral reaction unlike Lynch, FLCL, Lain. And the fans hated the ending so much they sent death threats to the creator. Who responded by essentially murdering all the characters violently and thoroughly, except that shit Shinji and the fans ate it up.

How many eps on DVD (and per DVD)? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think about two per disc, on a 2 disc set. There's a commentary tack to each one, as well as three versions: The Japanese Version, The Translated Version (which you saw on Adult Swim), and an Americanized version (believe it or not, this is actually the funniest version.) Oh, and there's about four volumes. My prediction on the show: Alot of people hate it now, but it will gain a decent sized cult-following among Anime, Animation, and surreal comedy fans who are tired of seeing the same thing over and over in anime. It's like the ultimate "Fuck You" to his fans. And what's funnier is that the fans ate it all up and loved him for it. Anyways, as for anime shows that have come to Adult Swim this year, I really dig Paranoia Agent and GITS:Stand Alone Complex, I was a bit unimpressed with Full Metal Alchemist, and I hate S-Cry-Ed. Guest JMA Report post Posted August 9, 2005 And when was the last time National Lampoon had a good movie? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I believe the only movies that did that people liked were Animal House, Vacation, and Christmas Vacation. Everything else has pretty much been lambasted by fans and critics. You should see all the 0% scores most of the movies have at Rotten Tomatoes.
Exslade ZX 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 And when was the last time National Lampoon had a good movie? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well...I know I'm in the minority, hell probaly the only one, but I thought Dorm Daze was fucking AWESOME. It actually had me interested in, and waiting to see what would happen in the end, while laughing for most of the movie.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 BTW, which season of Harvey Birdman were those episodes they referenced? The one with Gigi was pretty lame, but I liked Unaboo-Boo, him trying to kill the robot dog, and especially Peanut's hitting puberty. I also don't like S-Cry-ed. GitS is hard to catch many eps of but it's good. PA I have no friggin' clue what the hell is going on, didn't catch it from beginning.
Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 See, none of that Birdman stuff they referenced ever happened, it was just a dumb generalization. I don't mind Scryed. It's just dumb, fun action, but I'll readily admit it's pretty mediocre.

David Blazenwing 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 Saw it and laughed. Given how the people in charge of Adult Swim, in the past year and a half, have become total dicks with their heads up their asses and such blatant asshole pouser asshat coming from the people via their bumper segments, let alone the whole "NEW NEW NEW!!! ONLY ANIME WORTH SHOWING IS NEW ANIME THAT'S ONLY TWO YEARS OLD AT THE OLDEST!" as well as the shit nature of the new shows (only Robot Chicken is funny) let alone cancelling Sealab, the over-exposure of Aqua Teen, and the overall throwing of a huge ass tantrum about bringing reruns of Space Ghost back, and their general bitching at fans for not watching the shit action-themed anime that they air (Note to Adult Swim, if no one's watching the shit shows only you AS producers like, why the fuck not use your fucking money to buy the rights to shows people fucking want to fucking see you little shits??????) they deserve to be fucking mocked, even if it's by National Lampoon of all people. Hell, I can't wait to see how Adult Swim fucks up Neon Genesis Evangelion come October. I bet we can expect them bitching about having to fucking show GOOD anime and cancelling it after about four/five episodes under the guise of it not getting "good" ratings, while keeping shit like the shit anime on Saturday nights going strong simply becasue the shitheads in charge of Adult Swim are the only ones liking the shows because they are all shiney and new.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Damn, are you the guy who wrote the unfunny NL movie? I've been an AS fan since it's debut in 2001, and I've always liked what they've put on, with the possible exception of TGTTM (the second season is just... wow... and not a good wow) so don't mess with AS, bitch! Lol... but seriously, if you can do better, go buy a network and show that AS how to run a 10 pm to 5 am block of animation!
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 Toon Disney kind of threw together its answer to AS (action anyway)--I believe they had X-Men, Spider-Man, The Tick, and Gargoyles I believe. Started around 10 I think. *checks schedule* seems it still is around, but they replaced Gargoyles with something called Shinzo.

Hellfire, if Cartoon Network can show Family Guy and Futurama nonstop there is no excuse for Toon Disney to not do the same with Lightspeed Rescue and Time Force (and when it finishes, SPD), since both shows are the closest Power Rangers have ever gotten to successfully reaching the level of adult drama of say Buffy, Angel, Smallville, and such. Especially Lightspeed Rescue, which is has all of the great things about Buffy/Angel but without any of Whedon and company's fuck ups....
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 I found this bumper not so funny. But Adult Swim definately sucks ass. Family Guy isn't really an "AS Show" anymore, as it airs on FOX and TBS, and anyone who's a big-time fan of the show most likely has the old eps on DVD. Futurama is a big hit or big miss show. Aqua Teen is good. But that's repeats, repeats, and 15 minutes of every-now-and-then new episodes of Aqua Teen. The rest fucking blows, too much crappy Anime. JasonX 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 You mean there's Power Ranger series out there that are delightfully cheesy and witty instead of flat-out bad and uber-cheesy? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I take it you've never seen Time Force? Even though it was toned down from the Japanese version, Time Force is pretty much the darkest and most fucked up Power Rangers series of the franchise. A series about the horrors of a future of genetically altered humans persecuting anyone who isn't beautiful, major characters being horribly injured, betrayal (one of the Rangers betrays the other rangers so that an innocent bystander will die so as to ensure their future doesn't get nullified), the notion that no matter what you do to change the future it's essentially impossible to change the future and escape one's destiny, and the running theme that people in the future will not only continue to be prejudice/racist against others who are different but will accuse anyone who says that racism/prejudice still exists is a thought criminal out to undermine society by bringing up the fact that racism/prejudice still exists in the future....
