WWE Reaction To TNA Commercials, Smackdown, more

I marked out big time. I wasn't even watching the TV and I heard "like wrestling?", turned and saw it was a TNA on Spike commercial and I felt really good about it. ECW's problem and the problem with TNA on FSN (well besides the awful timeslot) was no advertising. Now that Spike is in charge of the ad revenue, they have a share in the show doing well and it forces them to advertise it. This is exactly what they need to be doing in the final month RAW is on TNN. I think they should have another commercial ready to go briefly showing the difference between their product and WWE's (something like, "tired of the same boring wrestling show?" with a couple guys doing very basic spots), and then show some rapid fire clips of the X division with Mike Tenay and Don West commentarry clips screaming and then end with the graphic that says coming to SpikeTV in October with audio in the background of the iMPACT! zone fans chanting "TNA" or "This is awesome".

 

Good times are about to be here again.

I don't see a lot of people ever accepting the goofy 6 sided ring thing and I really wish NWA: TNA would get rid of it if they ever want to make it big.

 

The UFC show did a 1.8 this week after Raw....why not put the NWA on that time? Anyone else think that this shit Velocity time slot is a test to see how it does and if it goes over well they might start airing it on Monday nights at some point?

 

I also wish that they would stop calling the promotion simply "TNA" and concentrate more on it being the NWA. People at least might remember the NWA from the Flair glory days. TNA though? It sounds kinda cheesy.

I'm sure they use TNA because they don't want them associated with older versions of wrestling or NWA/WCW.

 

As for UFC, I'm not sure why they don't decide to do a block of programming, say on Thursday, and then run a one-hour UFC Unleashed on Sunday (since SmackDown is no longer competition but Thursday still can be a "wrestling" night), and run the Unleashed up against HEAT and I'm sure they can beat WWE head-to-head. Given that they actually decide to advertise things properly. Right now, IIRC, TNA will be on the tail-end of a three hour block of UFC programming, which is just too much.

1. The 6 sided ring differentiates them from WWE and "traditional" wrestling. It makes them unique, is an attention grabber, and something to market themselves with (ala UFC's Octagon) whether you personally like it or not. You get used to it after watching a second time anyway.

 

2. TNA's contract with Spike begins in October, at which point RAW will no longer be on the network. UFC's contract has them airing after RAW until it moves off the network at which point both shows go to Saturday night as part of a block of programming. Come on, you know they can't just kick off UFC abruptly and it would be foolish to throw TNA out there without any advertising. I, though, have thought it would be a great idea for the first iMPACT! to air either right after the final RAW or in the RAW timeslot the following week, but it doesn't look like that will happen.

 

3. We've been through the name discussion before. It's not great by any means, but it's already been established to an extent. All their merchandising, logos, trademarks, etc. bear "TNA". They can't change it now. They want to move away from the NWA since they want to be their own entity. If they use "NWA" not only does it make them sound dated and irrelevant (which is exactly what they want to avoid) but it also beholds them to the NWA board in terms of licensing, etc. They use the titles since they have some respect and lineage amongst wrestling fans. Otherwise, they are their own company.

For me, the funniest thing about that newsbit was the fact that when the McMahons were unhappy, the WWE workers WERE happy. Kind of tells you something about morale....

Apparently TNA only have a 13 week contract with Spike and are expected to deliver a set rating (matching Velocity before growing) over that period.

The minimum goal Spike is setting for TNA is for the company to at least reach the 0.5 rating WWE Velocity had averaged in the timeslot and then improve on that. Spike has made it very clear that they would like to see steady ratings improvements over the course of that 13 week trial run and are hoping for a strong ratings debut on October 1.

I don't think they'll have too much of a problem doing that. I bet Spike packs this weekend's Velocity with TNA advertisements.

I'm sure 0.5 ratings should be doable. ECW on TNN occasionally got ratings hovering around the 1.0 mark, right? The debut episode, at the very least, should get a lot of interest.

 

I don't know whether the new TNA Impact will be screened in Australia, but if it was, I'd watch it just to spite WWE.

If it's an enjoyable match with good wrestling, I couldn't give less of a shit about who's wrestling in it. TNA could impress "Joe Public" by putting on good matches, regardless of how big the names are.

I remember them as low as 0.8 and as high as 1.8, usually around 1.2 or 1.3.

You're damn right!!!!! Look at what they did to ECW in 2000. The second Spike TV began courting WWE, ECW was busted wide open and left out in the ditch bleeding to death.

 

The fact of the matter is that if you're on your way out a relationship with them, by gawd Spike TV will backstab you. In over 25 years in the business I never seen anything this sadistical!!!

MJ, the thing is the 6 sided ring is just goofy to look at. I did try watching the FSN show a few times but the ring was so stupid to look at that I couldn't get used to it. And I used to watch their Wed. PPVs quite a bit in 2002-03. There's such a thing as being too experimental, and stuff like this will appeal to a fringe market and few others.

 

The thing about TNA is that it makes a nice name for a TV show but that's about it. It is NOT a good name for the actual promotion. Total Nonstop Action is like Raw or Smackdown, but the actual promotion is the NWA whether they like it or not. Sure, being the NWA is old school but I don't think many people really associate it with late era WCW so it doesn't have a stigma.

The six sided ring is great. Tradition is fine, but doing something out of the ordinary is what TNA should be about. It's still great wrestling in the ring...just a six sided one.

Why are so many people bothered by the six sided ring? I mean, why not focus on the actual match instead of what friggin' shape the ring is. Besides, it lends itself perfectely for X division matches like the ultimate X match.

I like Ultimate X matches. However, the point is they are something different to "WWE Style" which could help to bring in viewers.

I was more impressed by the WWE Raw commercial coming on during The Tonight Show than the TNA plug.
