The NFL's plan for the Saints first "home" game

Recommended Posts

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2150014

The New Orleans Saints will play their home opener against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., the NFL announced Friday.

The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority offered to host the upcoming Giants-Saints game at Giants Stadium because of the devastation in New Orleans, an authority spokesman said Thursday.

The game, scheduled for Sept. 18 at the New Orleans Superdome, could be held the next day, Monday, at the Giants home field at the Meadowlands sports complex, said authority spokesman Bernard T. Spigner.

The New York Jets, who share the stadium with the Giants, play the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 18.

The NFL will make the decision on the game site, Spigner said.

"They are looking at many different locations where this can be played," he said.

He said the New Jersey offer was made in a letter sent Wednesday by George R. Zoffinger, president and CEO of the authority, which operates the Meadowlands, to NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Well, it's not like playing in the Superdome has been that much better or worse for New Orleans in the Haslett/Brooks era. Take a look at their away record in that time period:

5-3 in 2004

4-4 in 2003

5-3 in 2002

4-4 in 2001

If anything, playing on the road might be better for them. That makes them 18-14 on the road.

Wouldn't it have been better to send Jets/Dolphins to Miami and keep both games on Sunday.

A home game doesn't matter much, if a large portion of the crowd is absent. Any Saints game in the near future, will likely have more fans of the other team in attendance.

There isn't really anywhere to play as most of the stadiums are being used for relief efforts.

Rant,

True on part of that... the Alamodome, the Astrodome, etc. are getting filled up.

However, Tiger Stadium itself is *NOT* being used as a shelter, although the LSU Field House, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the Parker Agriculture Center, and other places on campus are being used as shelters and triage centers.

Or they could just give Giants stadium the operating costs cut and use the rest of the revenue as donation money since they are the New Orleans Saints.

Not going to happen, but they could atleast give the tix to the Saints game to Jets season ticket holders so the crowd would be hostile towards the Giants.

If Tom Benson has his way, the Saints will be playing in San Antonio.

He'll have to change the name though. Saints just ain't a Texas themed name.

Yeah, but the NBA never saw fit to remove the Jazz nickname from the departing New Orleans franchise, especially when Mormons aren't exactly known for their jazz

No, not even close.

L.A. at least has some water and lakes (though it's obviously not what it's known for). They moved the Jazz to Utah, where music is not allowed.

I heard someone say that the Superdome would probably be demolished shortly...

I would think they could play at RFK, especially since all of the remodeling done for the Nationals, although the scheduling would be a pain..

Why move them to a city that already has a PRO franchise?

If anything, moving to San Antonio was already dicussed before and The AlamoDome can host the Saints in the meantime and it's still geographically closer to New Orleans.

I think the NBA has a rule about not changing names, because the Clippers, Hornets, and Grizzlies all kept theirs in spite of geographic idiosyncrasy.

and yet the Bullets became the Wizards, and we all know how many practitioners of black magic Washington makes home to...

No way. The RFK Stadium grass is getting torn up hosting two teams (baseball and soccer) as it is now.
