The real 49ers showed up in the 4th but at least they held on.

Tune to NFL Primetime and it's going to be an hour of the trademark Chris Berman hushed, serious tones.

Yes, I can't wait for the dulcet tones of Theismann and Maguire.

Speaking of which, is there a decent online Play by Play of the night game? I refuse to listen to the ESPN crew.

ESPN radio is a better crew.

it's only Week 1, but I wonder if Sean Salisbury still thinks the Cardinals are the "team to beat" in the NFC West?

Have to love all the "Bret Favre is done" talk that is going to come up this week, only to see him throw 4 TDS next week and then the same people proclaiming "Bret Never lost it!!" "He's still gritty, tough and a natural winner!"

Green Bay's offense was just positively awful today. I blame the playcalling, but I'm happy that the defense showed up today and played well, without disguising themselves like they did last year during Week 1 (BLITZ! BLITZ! BLITZ! HA! WE'RE GREAT BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT ALL OUR BLITZING YET! HA!).

I expected Detroit to win, however, I didn't expect for the Packers not to score a touchdown. They'll get the offense fixed though, I'm sure.. Just hope Javon Walker's okay and that they actually try running the damn ball next week. Fuck how good Favre looked in the preseason; he's not going to find anyone to throw to if he's passing on every down, including 3rd and short. Both his turnovers were also bullshit, since the first "fumble" was clearly a forward pass but it wasn't challenged, and the interception landed on the ground. Penalties like fucking crazy today.

I expect nothing less than a complete, total, utter annihilation of the Browns next week at Lambeau. It'll also be right after they honor Reggie White's memory, so everyone will be psyched for it, I hope.

Minnesota REALLY looked overrated today, but maybe it's just Tampa finally showing up and looking like a younger, more offense-oriented version of the `02 team?

Let's see:

Clifton, Tauscher, Flannigan, Klemm, Whittacker all played like shit. Clifton hasn't been the same since the hit by Sapp, Tauscher just looked bad, and the three interior line-men played like trash. Are we in the fucking 80's?

Brett Favre: Still, the turnovers that happened killed us,and it was a pick, and the fumble, and it was just brutal. It was like the old games at the Silverdome when he would throw four INT's.

Driver, Ferguson, Walker, Franks, Chatman: Walker pushed off, and they couldn't catch the ball against a ok back-field.

Green, Henderson: Both looked good and I hope that we give them the ball against a bad Cleveland defense

Special Teams: The block in the back calls killed momentum.

Defense: I liked it, better than the swiss chesse one we saw last year.

My hat's off to the Lions, and I'm glad I went to the Ohio State/Texas game instead of this game.

If tonight's act of fellatio is going to be the norm, I hope the Saints stop playing football.

Sometimes, I really hate it when I'm right.

However, a holdout is selfish and only hurts both sides. No good has ever come out of a player who held out for more money; almost every single time this has happened, especially when it extends through training camp, they suffer some kind of major injury at the beginning of the season and then are never quite the same player again, while being paid obscene amounts of money that they finally got.

I'm speaking as someone who had to go through the Dorsey Levens situation in `98, and the Antonio Freeman one the following year, and that I just put up with the Mike McKenzie bullshit ...

Walker injures knee, will undergo MRI on Monday

DETROIT -- Packers receiver Javon Walker's season hangs in the balance after he injured his right knee in the third quarter against Detroit on Sunday.

"It was his ACL," Packers coach Mike Sherman said after the Lions won 17-3.

Sherman said the team will not know how serious the injury is until Walker has an MRI on Monday, although the Green Bay Post-Gazette is reporting that Walker is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Walker was hurt when he caught a 55-yard pass -- negated by a pass-interference call against him -- and was tackled by safety Terrence Holt.

As Walker lay on the turf, he grabbed his right knee. After trainers attended to him for a few minutes, he gingerly walked toward the bench. He was later taken to the locker room on a cart, once shaking his head from side to side. He did not return to the game.

Walker, Green Bay's top receiver, had four receptions for 27 yards against Detroit. He extended his streak with a catch to 38 games, including playoffs.

After threatening to hold out of training camp for a new contract, Walker reported. He said the best way to prove his worth wasn't to withhold his services, but to put his talents back on display.

He's due $515,000 this season, the fourth of a five-year deal he signed in 2002 for $7.485 million. The Packers refused his agent's overtures for a hefty pay raise or to shop him around.

Walker was Green Bay's MVP last season and earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl. In his third season, he led the team with 89 receptions for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdown receptions, all career highs.

Now, Walker reported to training camp and played it like a class act but he probably didn't keep his conditioning up to speed by skipping the offseason workouts and the first part of training camp he did miss (from what I remember).

You'll now see Drew Rosenhaus everywhere saying "That's why he held out. To make some money in case this happens!"

I'll give anybody who holds out a cautionary tale: Holding out might have killed Philip Rivers' pro career.

They can't run for shit.

And, gee, what a shocker: Jamal Lewis is my starting RB this week.

Not entirely sure about that, as also when Levens and Freeman broke their fibulas after their respective holdouts, what can you do to strengthen that area (other than have a rather calcium intake)?

I just don't think it happens to be any sort of coincidence that players that holdout most, if not all, of offseason workouts tend to have injury issues that season.

The ligament really can't be strengthened at all. The only thing that could be debatable would be if you argued that these guys aren't playing at 100%, and therefore, could get hurt by not going full speed... and that's what I'd say was the case for Levens and a few others. But, the only way you can strengthen the ligament itself is to get it replaced (i.e. Tommy John surgery, reconstructive surgery, etc.)
