Prayer Allowed in Schools!

If you're Muslim....

CLIFFSIDE PARK, New Jersey (AP) -- Yasmeen Elsamra had a simple request: While her classmates were eating lunch, she wanted to go off by herself for a few moments to pray.

The 14-year-old was told she couldn't, and went home distraught that afternoon in October 2003. Praying five times a day is a cornerstone of her Muslim faith.

"If I wasn't allowed to pray my second prayer at school, I couldn't do it at home," she said. "When school finishes, the third prayer begins."

Her family contacted a Muslim advocacy group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which asked the school district to reconsider. Eventually, the district acknowledged it had no policy preventing a student from praying on his or her own during free time, and allowed Yasmeen to use an empty classroom to unfurl her prayer rug, face Mecca and touch her head to the floor in a few moments of worship.

Her case was part of a nationwide grassroots effort by Muslim parents to make public schools more friendly and accommodating to Muslim students. The movement has gained strength since the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Umm Rant, no one has been told they can't pray, christian/muslim/jew etc.....

There is a difference between someone doing it by themselves on their own, and the TEACHER LEADING THE CLASS IN GROUP PRAYER.

Uh, I don't believe that's been the problem as of late, NoCal. It's just been prayer in general.

And considering how this is pretty much completely private in nature, sure, why not.

Well that is what I am saying, I mean group led prayer by the teacher in the classroom has been shitlisted for awhile now, but no one has, or no law has upheld any decision to not allow a child to privately pray at recess.

This will only face a major problem is if someone that isn't muslim goes off to pray on their own time elsewhere and isn't allowed. Then you run into a issue cause then you are giving a religion special treatment.

Right now, eh no big deal. Let her pray.

Guest Agent of Oblivion

I recall praying by students every time a team took to the field or the court, and a friend of mine personally bowed his head and took a moment before lunch every day without retribution. It's allowed in that sense, in every case I've seen (don't bother pulling up an example where it's not because I'm sure they exist).

What NoCal described should be a vehement THOU SHALT NOT in terms of public school.

If you're Muslim....

Bitching about other religions getting equal treatment is a great way to start a thread!

If your name is MrRant....

He should have signed it -=Rant since it was nothing spectacular. In most schools, lunch/free period you can spend doing as you please. In most public middle schools, a student could freely go and spend sometime praying.

That's not the same thing as a class being led in a prayer by a teacher, which is what proponents of "school prayer" are always talking about.

When I was in Highschool, we used to take a knee after we played(and lost) a football game in the middle of the field, with players from the other team, coaches and all, until the coaching staff got a call saying that we could still do it but they couldn't be involved, so they would leave the field and we could pray.

So I do think it is teacher led prayer is not allowed.

Football doesn't count. That's all about togetherness. You aren't suppose to show togetherness with the other team, you traitor.

You have no right to call yourself a fighting Tiger.

And here, the coaches join in with no problems. That's because the school usually says "kids want us there, bite us" and the district agrees. One parent tried to threaten the school so her kid quit the team because he was tired of her bullshit. Poor kid, having a psycho mother.
