PPVs and your moneys worth

Recommended Posts

Guest Jim Ross

Over the years ive always seemed to have been the 'anti smark'.. spewing out the usual lines "if you dont like it.. why watch it" etc you all know the drill by now.

But ive noticed recently that my thoughts are now the same as the rest of you.. and coincidentally its been for about the same length of time that ive had to pay for PPVs here in the UK.

For nearly 20 years or so i have been watching PPVs free of charge over here, so have generally been happy with the product. But now ive started paying for it ive started feeling a little less impressed with the product.

So I ask, What PPV that youve paid for has proven to be the biggest waste of money and why?

I would have to go with GAB 2005. I honestly cant remember anything worthwhile about the PPV.. I cant even remember the matches.. all i remember is Dave vs JBL and the match where Jordan beat Benoit, but for the life of me I cant remember what else was on the card. Definately a total waste of money as the matches on the card obviously never led to anything meaningful anyway.

Now I dont want this to be a 'worst ppv of all time' type thread, I want to know what you all think the biggest waste of PPV money you have spent on a PPV. I dont mean match quality so much, but more in the line of payoffs for angles and potential setups for another?

GAB 2005 still gets my vote, but i havent had to pay for PPVs over the last 20 years, so I would appreciate your feedback on this

I bought No Way Out 2005 because it was part of the Road to Wrestlemania package from DirecTV. In fairness, the ordering deadline was a month before the show's card was announced.

Granted, I split the fee w/ a buddy, but WCW World War 3 1997 was the biggest waste of a ppv dollar I've ever spent.

IIRC, not one title changed. Not one storyline was advanced except for Scott Hall earning a future WCW Title shot. It was just a bunch of mediocre wrestling.

Beware of Dog II.

Spending most of the afternoon and night flipping between infomercials and the pay-per-view feed hoping to see ANYTHING...and then the ultimate payoff with Shawn and Davey Boy ending as a draw.

If that's excluded...Invasion. I don't know what I was expecting, but it had to be better than this.

EDIT: Last pay-per-view I paid for was Backlash 2003. After that, our TW-provider stopped carrying ordering services.

Very rarely do I ever actually plan on buying a show, I'm lucky enough to have a friend who always orders at least the big 4 PPVs every year and invites everyone over to watch, beyond that, every so often if I happen to be home on a Sunday night, and I have nothing better to do, I'll ordr the show on my own dime, unless the card looks absolutly awful (GAB 2005). The only 2 shows I can honestly think of off the top of my head that I remember saying to myself "I absolutly must oder this show" were No Way Out 2004, just because all reports at the time were that Eddie was going to go over and win the belt, and I had to se that, and Backlash 2004, because I was sold on Orton vs Foley.

The only show I can honestly remember ordering and thinking "this is a waste of money" is Bad Blood 03, largely because of that dumb ass Redneck Triathalon or whatever the hell they were calling it.

I remember being disappointed by Summerslam 98, not so much because it was a bad show but because I don't think it lived up to the hype going in.

Almost all of the 4th quarter '04 TNA weekly's. WWE-wise?

Ummm...prolly KOTR '02, since that's the last non-Big 4 PPV by WWE I bought until Vengeance '03. Even WM21 was extremely underwhelming to me, as I was bored by everything but Angle/HBK and 'Taker/Orton.

I managed to avoid ever buying a WWE PPV that I would consider a complete waste of money.

I was not so lucky with my only foray into WCW PPVs - Spring Stampede 2000 (the "reset button" show).

Oh yeah, that was so bad I turned it off before DDP-Jarrett. Absolutely a tragic show.

Fortunately, I've been pretty lucky with the PPV's I've ordered.

Out of the ones I've purchased, I'd say that Backlash 2001 (headlined by Austin/HHH vs. Undertaker/Kane) and King of the Ring 2000 (headlined by HHH/ Vince/ Shane vs. Rock/ Undertaker/ Kane) were very underwhelming shows.

I ordered a TNA weekly ppv with the Ultimate X match... Don't remember who was in it, AJ Styles and some other people. The rest of the show wasn't too impressive either and turned me off from TNA forever.

For WWE, Judgment Day 02 left a bad taste in my mouth. JR/King calling the whole show despite it being 2 brands... HHH burying Jericho in HIAC (though to be fair, the match itself wasn't bad)... Rikishi and Rico winning the tag titles... And the god-awful Hogan/UT match *shudder*

Starrcade 1997.

Nitro the next night blew it out of the water.

If that was the one with Hogan-Sting, then I agree.

God, that match was like having ALL the air sucked out of you. The night WCW put the first bullet into themselves.

I agree with Starrcade 97. It was the first WCW ppv I ever bought, with my Birthday and Christmas money as a probably 12 year old kid, and it was a huge dissapointment. I was a Nash mark since I started watching WWF in 95, and so when Giant/Nash did not happen I was pretty pissed off. Then Sting/Hogan was the mess of over a years' build and I was just turned off from taking WCW seriously ever again. I think the only other WCW ppvs I bought were Bash at the Beach with Malone/DDP Vs. Hogan/Rodman, and Great American Bash 99 or whatever the one was with Sting/Vampiro rip off Inferno Match with the stunt man dive off the set/the big suprise promised that ended up being Goldberg turning heel for no reason.

This year, the Great American Bash which I saw live, and now Unforgiven. Thanks for the exact same DQ finish in the main event

Pretty much almost all the Unforgiven, Armageddon, and GAB PPVs suck complete ass. Oh yeah and Bad Blood 2003.

You know, if we're talking non-WWE/F shows, I've gotta throw Wrestlepalooza 98 down there. I was a huge ECW mark going in and that was the first PPV of theirs I got the chance to see...and it was horrible. It just killed their whole aura for me, and as much as I loved the promotion, I don't think my faith in them ever fully recovered after seeing that show.

I stopped buying PPVs after Summerslam 2000...prior to that, with the exception of a few IYH's, I never bought anything outside of the BIG 5 (BIG 4 right now)...This year, I purchased WM 21 and Summerslam, kinda kicking myself for not getting the Rumble (my favorite match and it was actually a pretty good one)...While 35 to 40 bucks is too much for a PPV, I don't exactly felt like I wasted my money on those two PPVs...the cards were solid and both had pretty good build ups...

There's very little that's redeemable about WWE TV from Wrestlemania X8 to Summerslam 2002. While the botched Invasion may have damaged the product the most, I'd argue the ugly period of wrestling that was 2002 ensured that WWE wasn't going to get out of the rut that it was standing in.

I wouldn't say I ever felt 'ripped off' by ordering an Armageddon, or Great American Bash, since I had no expectations in the first place and thus wasn't disappointed by the results. I probably felt most ripped off with a pay per view like Summerslam 2003, which is not a terrible card per se, but the ending of the final match (Triple H's win, instead of Goldberg) leaves a sour taste in the mouth that makes the whole pay per view seem like a waste.

I didn't order it, but I was there live for Survivor Series 1999: The Ultimate Bait and Switch.

Building up Austin, Rocky, and Hunter only to switch Austin for Big Show pissed everyone one there off.

When Chyna vs Jericho is the only memorable match on the card then you have problems. Just a completly forgettable show.

Fall Brawl 98, and I knew less than two minutes in.

As soon as they said War Games could end by a pin...and before everybody entered the cage...I knew immediately that WCW screwed me out of $35.

Raven vs. Saturn was the lone saving grace of that show, and it was *** at best.

I remember watching SummerSlam 2003 at Hooters. People were going so nuts for Goldberg to win, and when HHH won after having absolute zero involvement in the match, people were PISSED. People were throwing stools onto the ground and everything. I thought there was going to be a riot.

But to answer your question, I felt like I wanted to shoot myself for wasting $35 on No Way Out 2005. That PPV was seriously horrible. I pretty much quit watching and moved on to something else midway through the show. It became nothing but $35 background noise during UT/Luther Reigns.

I actually thought this last Armageddon wasn't that bad. Rey & RVD v Dupree & Sasaki was fun as was the ME.
