The Giants are fucking taking it. They already got the toughest game out of the way, beating Peavy, so it should be all downhill from here. Besides, when Tomko picks up the win tomorrow, the Padres are going to start to get demoralized about the way they're blowing the division, and then things will really go to hell for San Diego.

Really, if the Padres want to win the division, they have to win tomorrow, or else the Giants will roll through the series, finish off the sweep, and then ultimately win the division at 79-83.

2. GOD FORBID you use your best relief pitcher before the ninth inning.  Never mind that the game will be decided with the opposing team's heart of the order up in the eighth inning.

I loved when this was the rule and not the exception. It's why Goose Gossage isn't in the Hall of Fame -- not enough saves because he wasn't always the last pitcher in the game, even though he was ALWAYS the guy facing the tough hitters late.

If the Yanks win, and then the Sox take the second game, would that set some sort of record for most times the division leader has changed in 24 hours? They're up a half, we pull even, we go up a half, they pull even, they go ahead a half, we pull even.

At this rate we should just forget the next 3 games and go right to friday.

Well, this will probably be the only time you'll ever hear me say this but...

GO METS!

Seeing as how seemingly everyone in the free world wants the Phillies to take the WC for some reason, it'll be funny if one of the Astros traditionally "hated rivals" helps them. And as I have very little faith in the Astros' ability to beat the Cardinals this year, we need every Phils loss we can get.

Theres the Mussina I know.

Edit: Before you all tell me hows hes been a steady rock for us since 01 and a huge stopper, this year has just been horrid. He either has it for a start, or he doesn't. And most of this year, he hasn't.

Too bad the Orioles didn't play like this when Boston was in town. Mussina is yankeed after 1 2/3 innings pitched. Good god.

No one really gets how to evaluate saves in a historical context. It is not that Gossage had more "tough" saves or whatever. It is that Gossage and his ilk frequently entered the game in tie games, or non-save situations. It was not until Eckersley that managers saved their pitchers exclusively for save situations. Managers are admittingly getting better. It was worse 10 years ago.

Scoreboard update. Tampa Bay 4-0 over Cleveland. Toronto scores to make it 3-2 Boston and Gary Sheffield hit a 2 run homerun to make it 5-3 Baltimore over NY. Posada just hit in a double play after the yankees were getting back into it.

It is now 5-4 Boston over Toronto. Yankees had first and second no outs with Jeter and Arod coming up. Sheffield with a Grand Slam. Yankees go up 7-5 after being down 5-1.

Probably because before the walk, he K'd Jeter and A-Rod both looking. Difference between their ABs and Sheff's is that they were looking for changeups, and got caught looking on fastballs, while Sheff was dead red.

It's nice to see Leiter nibble around the plate with .270 hitters who have 1 homerun and see them get walked.

I want to see Al Leiter Hanged, Drawn and Quartered. Orioles take a 8-7 lead against this Bum.

Well as long as Sheff get's up twice more we should be good...
