NBA 2K6 and NBA Live 2006

Recommended Posts

The games came out (suprised me) and I have played both.

As always, Live is rated higher, despite in the past year bing leagues below what they were doing on the 2k games. I honestly could never understand how someone could possibly consider the EA effort to be better games.

Live is a little better this year, but still the same ol arcadey crap that I haven't liked since 1996. NBA 2K6, with all of its changes, still pretty much feels like last years effort, although the AI and the way some of the players play is more realistic. I still prefer 2k6, although I won't be buying either.

College Hoops has been the best basketball game out there for 2 years now and I don't anticipate that changing this year so I will be waiting for that.

I'll probably rent both and try them out, but if I want to buy a game, I'll probably just wait for another NBA Street to come out, if there is one.

I've been playing the Live series somewhat consistently since 2000. The last couple years I was disappointed, because the fantasy mode was replaced by the dynasty mode, in which you can only pick one team, thus making it harder to stack your team with all the good players. :)

I've actually gone back to playing 2000 a lot on the PC, then tried 2003 again and can't even make it through a quarter before shutting it off. The game play just gets less and less realistic each year, despite the fact that I'm winning by about 100 points each game on 2000. I haven't really tried any other series that much, I guess just out of habit of playing Live so much.

I have to agree about Live, I still say that their best version was Live 96 for the Genesis. 97 and 98 were almost unplayable, 99 I didn;t play, 2000 I had on the PS1 and it was okay... I liked the game intro better than the game itself.

I hope 2k6 is better from a defensive standpoint, because nothing annoys me more on 2k5 than defending a shot about as well as you can and still watching it go in, and blocking shots is more about luck than timing, no matter what your rating is with blocked shots... not to mention that smaller guard had such a ridiculous advantage because of the ability to change up shots while in the air.

I pride myself on being a good player on the defensive end in that game, and it was still a little frustrating to see Iverson and Francis go off for 35-40 because they change their shots in midair almost instantaneously.

I'm in the pro-Live (hehe) minority. I own both 2K5 games and I honestly like Live more. I feel like I make every shot on the Sega game and the player movement seems less smooth. Live just seems more dynamic and you have to actually be open to hit a shot. And the Sega game is really easy, even on the hardest difficulty setting.

I will probably be trying out both 2K6 games though.

I don't know about that block shot thing. It really is about timing. With a big guy, its almost too easy. I am averaging about 13 blocks per game with Amare in 2k5.

I never really had a problem on defense...my deal was that there were some teams I just plain couldn't beat with the Knicks...the Pistons always beat me...the Heat always did at Miami...I don't think they had a Home Court factor in 2K5, but I could never beat the damn Heat in Miami...

Thats why ya make trades, bro. You're just a masochist if you're playing the Knicks in a season as they are. Aside from Starbury, what do they have?

Kurt Thomas, Jamal Crawford and Allen Houston (who, amazingly, NEVER gets injured) were SCORING MACHINES in that game...I imagine, this season, their ratings won't be quite as high! I made trades here and there, but nothing major, just role players...

I blew up the Suns roster, got a better head coach and training staff... and still was under the cap by about 3 million. It was going to be interesting come sign up time, but its all moot now because I bought 2k6 today.

I swear, the only times I have finished a full 82 game season were live 95, 96, and 2001...

Guest I miss Test.

I'll also be waiting for College Hoops 2k6. It was slightly better last year becase there were actually fouls, career mode is much better, but many annoying bugs.

Hopefully, Ripper plays it on Live so I can kick his cute little black ass.

Yeah the bugs were annoying.

And my X-box is modded so no live for me, but rest assured, if I was on live, I would beat your ass with some sorry school like Jacksonville State just so that I could hurt your ego even more.

The AI can be tough, at first, but once you get used to it...you'll have to be adjusting sliders.

I am going to rent and burn a copy of 2K6 to hold me over until I buy

College Hoops.

I would like to add that I have never had to adjust a slider in College hoops and it still was challenging.

I never held back in 2k5... I adjusted things to make them more difficult and I was still blowing teams out by 25-30, sometimes worse.

Well, thats why I hold back. I hate blowouts.

In College Hoops 2K5, I took me like 12 games to beat NC for the first time in MOP mode. I nearly pulled an upset with St. Johns, but they are fucking tough.

I just might trade this in for Live... the learning curve is pretty damned steep for a game that completely revamped the control scheme, and I simply cannot get a good camera angle, like I did with 2k5. Its pretty frustrating right now.

THIS is IN GAME FOOTAGE.

Holy...freaking...crap.

Did you see that gameplay footage?

You can still see some of the jaggies around the players in their stills, but all they have to do is some edge blending and you have the most amazing looking basketball game ever.

Ripper - reconsidering waiting on the 360.

I still don't see how people rate CH above NBA2k5, when...they're pretty much the exact same game. I have both, and they play the exact same way. Only CH has more teams. That's it.

And it's only FIRST-GEN.

Yeah, that is a spiffy system.

The AI is better in College Hoops. Like in 2K5, you could hopstep your way to a hundred points with one player while in college hoops, you WILL pay. They call timely timeouts, take advantage of weaknesses (like the lowest rated player on the court gets the offense going at him while in the NBA game they don't do a thing) Teams play to their strengths in college hoops. If they have a great PF, then they have a post and kick game and if they have a great point, they run lots of screens for him to score and such. In the NBA game, if the team has Charlie Ward at the point and Tim Duncan at the PF, Charlie Ward will STILL take the majority of the shots because the guards on that game are quite trigger happy.

So much of the College game just flows better than the NBA game to me. Even with the same control scheme, they are two completely different beast.

If 2K6 is $20, I'll buy it soon. If not, I'll try out both games and probably pick up the one I like better in TRU's buy 2 get 1 free sale at the end of the month.

I hadn't expected either game to be out til mid October, despite seeing commercials, but to my surprise (no net access to find out) I saw the games at Hollywood Video on Saturday.

Although the game has changed significantly in some ways from the E3 demo, I really like 2K6. After a game or two, I got used to the new shooting and stealing features with the right thumbstick and I'm loving the game. I haven't played online yet since I don't have a connection, but I can say that I'll probably never finish my 58 game season on 2K5 now.

Oh, and to the guy who mentioned it, NBA Live '98 for PSX was the best. ;)
