Bobby Lashley

Recommended Posts

Shelton's debut was actually very lackluster, occuring on Sunday Night Heat in 2002.

The name "Bobby Lashley" will NOT catch on.

He, however, is impressive, knows how to work a crowd, and has decent entertainment skills.

Upon watching him, and a major detractor of all the crap WWE tries to shove down our throats, I thought:

"Ring introduction is ridiculous but necessary."

"Monty Brown."

"Better than Monty Brown."

"Ha, slamming Dean like a basketball."

"Man, crowd is popping big...and it's not canned."

"YES! Dominator!"

"This guy didn't offend me. Thus, better than 90% of SD!'s roster."

Impressed?

Not really.

He's big (par for the course) and black (a rarity), but so what? The two guys I've seen everyone rush to compare him to are Monty Brown and Bob Sapp. He's bigger than Brown, but I didn't see any of the intensity or charisma. He looks better in the ring than Saap, but again, I'm not seeing the character. He seemed slightly more polished than the usual OVW monsters, but that's not really saying much.

That said, it was one week, I'm not ready to make any sort of definitive judgement about the guy either way, but on first impression his credentials were more impressive than anything he did.

Impressed?

Not all that much to be honest. He's very big and I immediately thought of Bob Sapp. He seems to be ok in the ring (remember Im only judging from this one match). He had more than the usual OVW big guy has when he comes up. However he just uses a regular and boring name and his theme was the usual stuff (i.e. boring rock thing). One thing that a guy like Masters has going for him is his great entrance with a theme that is really unique in todays WWE. This was just the usual thing. I feel that he needs more of a persona or gimmick. With that being said he recieved quite a good reaction from the live crowd without the help of an awesome theme or a cool gimmick. Thats a plus for sure. Lets wait and see how they will push him. He has shown some potential sp we'll see how he is used and if he can handle it.

He was called Blaster Lashley in OVW. Better Bobby than Blaster.

The last thing anyone needs is to be named after a Star Wars prop.

He reminded me of two people, a bigger chris benoit, and scott stiener, before the jiuce with the long black hair(1990-1997). He seems like a suplex machine, and has a wide variety of them like benoit, angle, etc., but is so much more powerfull. After watching his one match, i think he is way better than monty brown. Monty browns finishing move sucks, and he is all power. This kid can truelly wrestle..... 4x all american.

I liked Blaster Lashley better myself.

Lashley has the look they like and because of that he'll probrably be protected well. (hence them having Dean work with him because Dean worked with him a lot in OVW and knows what will get over) Unless he becomes like Carlito, who showed zero charisma in OVW and then blossomed in the mic department once called up, they need to find Lashley a mouthpiece because his voice is the shits.

Again, because of his size, he'll be given oppurtunity to get over.

So his mic skills suck like beniots and benjamin? Great

No, he has confidence when he speaks and isn't uneasy like Benoit and Benjamin can get, it's that his actual God-given voice is like Michael Jackson.

Paging Paul Heyman.

I NEED to see the crowd's reaction to him when he finally talks. I NEED to.

I've heard Lashley talk on OVW before and didn't really hear a Michael Jackson voice. Then again he mostly just said brief things like "Doane, you're a pussy" and all that.

He's getting over on OVW much like Batista with HHH: He's the power behind the throne, a powerful henchman who has credibility with the audience, although most times Ken Doane doesn't really appease Lashley like HHH did with Batista.

I think Lashley can get over, though I haven't seen nearly enough in the ring from him yet to say how good or bad he is. If they push him right I think he could be a solid match for Batista down the road.

Bobby Lashley is not the best name in the world, but I like what I saw from him, and the amatuer backround was impressive to say the least.

Anyone know who else used to do that finisher? Heard someone call it a "dominator" and I know I've seen it before.

Ron Simmons, aka Faarooq.

I'm surprised they didn't make more of a big deal about his military background to try and get him over. Because, there's the hook the guy needs. He's got a legitimate edge to him, he's got the amateur background, he actually looks like he could hurt someone, he looks more impressive physically than guys they try to get over as physical gods (Masters, Chris; Jindrak, Mark). The only problem I can see is Vince seeing $ signs too early and trying to turn him into Lesnar in 3 months, instead of letting him naturally get there.

I'd bill him as "The Blaster" Bobby Lashley and emphasize his military connection (put it over on commentary, have him wrestle in camo tights, etc.). I didn't get a chance to see his debut, but I look forward to seeing him this week on SmackDown!.

Ahhh, good ol' all american Ron Simmons, ok thanks.

Wow, I can't believe Lashley wrestled at 175, the guy is a absolute freak then (yes he obviously used GH and more steriods) but my god- putting on 120lbs of muscle even WITH steriods is impossible for most people. His physique is not as cut as Batista's though more along Lesnar's lines.

It says he's 250 now.

So that's only about 75 pounds of muscle.

His BIO and Pic

He kind of looks like Seal on steroids in that pic.  If he starts coming to the ring to "Kiss from a Rose" he'll have my vote!

But that'll ruin my idea for Teddy Long to be his manager, riding on his back to the ring, and having him being called Blaster Lashley. And the hometown being Bartertown.

If he wrestled at 175, he could conceivably have had a non-wrestling weight at 200. I'm sure he cut weight to wrestle at the 175 mark. Still, he has put on 50-65 lbs. since then, and it hasn't been THAT long ago.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome reference!

He DOES look like Seal omg!

They listed him at 275 during the pre-match rundown on SD, but I'm a good judge when it comes to bodyweight and height, and to me he looked around 290 or so seeing as how HHH lists at 275 and Lashley had more mass , especially around the lats.

But we are just splitting hairs really, no real diffrence in 15 lbs when your talk about guys who weigh anywhere from 250 to 500 lbs like in WWE.

Lashley has a black Brock thing going for him, I only hope WWE doesnt over push him and gives him time to learn how to work a great match before he's on Batista's ass for the strap.

On a side note, does anyone else think the WWE is hiring more collegiate background amateurs based on Kurt Angle's success? I love the idea that they are bringing in guys who have credibility as "real" wrestlers and teaching them professional wrestling, but why shit all over Puder when he has the same type of "shoot-style" background to build off? Especially with UFC trying to take viewers away.

I have a feeling that if Lashley actually weighed 290 like you think, WWE would jump right on that and pimp him as 300 lbs. Triple H is billed at 264 or so, and Lashley is probably a couple inches shorter. I would say he is anywhere from 250-265, and it's all muscle.

Have to agree with this, they would love to have a short guy listed at 300 lbs that doesn't look totally roided out (I'm sure he takes something, but he isn't ridiculously overdeveloped like Masters)

That guy is all of 245-255 at most.  He's not THAT tall.

Depends on how he's built though.

I'm 5'10" (barely) and I weigh from 230-240 yet only look about 180-190 at most. And i'm not even heavily muscled, I could probably put on 20 pounds if I worked at it. I can definitely buy him being 265-275.

Variations in bone density can contribute a lot to your weight, as well as just how much water weight your body can hold. Everyone's physiological makeup is slightly different :)
