Bored's 2005 MLB Player Rankings

Recommended Posts

I did it last year, so might as well do it again this year. For position players I take the Top 30 in games started at each position (might not necessarily be one player from each team) and rank them using five different statistical categories: OPS, Value Over Replacement Player, Equivalent Average, Runs Created (ballpark adjusted) and Win Shares.

2004 Rankings

Speaks worlds about Piazza still being one of the most valuable catchers in the Majors despite injuries and having a pretty bad year overall.

Wow, no wonder the Jays are shopping Orlando Hudson.  I knew he wasn't great, but I didn't expect to see him quite that far down the list.

I think the Bored's rankings miss the mark here. Four of his five criteria do not consider defense, while Win Shares sees Hudson as the best defensive second baseman in the majors.

True, but even in Win Shares Hudson ranked only 17th because of his poor offense. Really it's tough to find a defensive factor beyond Win Shares. Range factor and zone rating are both terribly flawed and I no idea where I'd be able to find UZR's for the 2005 season.

I can't wait til Abreu gets ranked like #1 or #3 and he's dealt in the offseason so the Phillies can worry about Big Injured Thome moving back into the lineup. I dislike Abreu, but the shit that's been rumored to occur involving Abreu and Wagner gone, Howard to the OF, Big Jim back to first is really awful.

Trade Abreu to the Cubs for Hollandsworth, Burnitz and a PTBNL.

Please?

1. We traded Holly to Atlanta

2. Do we still have the rights to Burny, or is he a UFA?

That'd work if Hollandsworth were still a Cub!

Ssssh...maybe they don't know. If we play our cards right, we can convince them to make the deal by adding Tuffy Rhodes to the mix.

Tuffy Rhodes? Nah, let's at least throw Macias in there so we're rid of his useless ass. And make Patterson the PTBNL.

Plus, if we traded both of them, Dusty might resign in protest.

2. Do we still have the rights to Burny, or is he a UFA?

I think there's an option on his contract. No idea if it's his or the team's.

How about Macias, Rhodes, Patterson, Burnitz, a box of baseballs, ten t-bone steaks, a bottle of Jack, and 3 Batman Begins dvds for Abreu?

Where the hell have you been getting rumors? I think everyone in the Phillies' front office knows putting Ryan Howard in left field is a bad idea, and I've never heard any serious discussion about it. It sounds like the same people who convince themselves the Phillies can move Jim Thome back to third base.
