Source: Phillies fire GM Wade

By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer

October 10, 2005

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Ed Wade was fired as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, a baseball official told The Associated Press.

The person familiar with the firing, speaking on condition of anonymity because there had been no official word of the move, said the announcement would be made at a 4 p.m. news conference.

Wade has failed to lead the Phillies to the playoffs in his eight seasons on the job. Philadelphia finished one game behind NL wild-card winner Houston at 88-74.

The Phillies haven't reached the playoffs since 1993, and have won just one championship (1980) in the franchise's 123-year history.

Wade has two years remaining on his contract and it's unknown whether he'll remain in the organization. Wade was very unpopular in Philadelphia, especially after he hired Charlie Manuel as manager to replace Larry Bowa.

Though the Phillies were in the playoff chase the entire season, fans never really warmed up to them. Attendance at 2-year-old Citizens Bank Park dropped off by almost 600,000, down from 3.25 million in 2004

Words cannot decribe how happy I am right now....

Hopefully they go with someone outside of the organization to be the new GM. If that happens, I bet Manuel's job might be in danger as well...

Eskin reported today that supposedly the Phillies got 7,000 to 10,000 letters from season-ticket holders threatening to not renew their season ticket packages if Wade was retained.

If that is true, I can't say I'm mad at them for doing that....

Apparently the word is the two top candidates for the job will be Gerry Hunsicker and Brian Cashman.

You should do a breakdown of all the candidates with their strengths and weaknesses and what the likeliness of them getting hired is.

Also in the press conference, Montgomery said that the new GM will decide on Manuel's future.

Haha it's hilarious watching Wade be anti-media and anti-fan in his comments to the reporters.

"Keeping his options open"? Wal-Mart or McDonalds?

"Get Billy Wagner re-signed" ?? Uh asshole, IT'S NOT YOUR JOB ANYMORE.

"I earned these 8 years". HAHAHAHA!!!!

What a delusional waste.

Well, Wade's gonna stay with the Phillies, I'd think.

Washing socks or something. The mlb.com sounded like he lost his position, but not a job with the team.

The FireEdWade.com site will be missed. I love the picture with the fan and him.

Montgomery said in the press conference that he was not being retained in any role, I believe.

I mean what could he do? Get the coffee and newspaper in the morning? Or maybe they'll do a fundraiser. Kick Ed Wade in the nuts for $5, I'd be they'd make at least $20,000 a game doing that.

I wonder what Ed's next job will be. Perhaps him and Richie Kotite can get together and form something.

I am a little bit concerned about who will be the new GM. During Monty's press conference he was saying that the new GM will get to pick a manager, but you could tell that he really wants Manuel to stick around. That makes me think that anyone who comes in and tells him they would be willing to keep Manuel will jump ahead of the rest of the candidates. And the ones most likely to tell him that are the in house candidates that they really just need to ignore.

Would Amaro or Arbuckle make bad GMs? No idea. But the Phillies desperately need to get someone from outside of the organization to bring a fresh perspective to the front office.

I'm personally hoping for Gerry Hunsicker. Philadelphia native with friends in the organization, was the architect of the Astros, and really left because he was sick of dealing with Drayton McClain.

Now if only the Dodger fans can convince the braintrust that is Frank McCourt can dispatch DePo, life will be good.

McCourt is just as much of the problem that DePo is.

It wasn't the overall wins and loses that did it for me Al. It was his smugness. They didn't make the playoffs once and he always made it sound like they were a perfect run club and were just getting bad breaks every year. I think that a lot of people feel that the club was so close he should have been able to push them over the top.

Yeah, those Astros won a TON of postseason games. He's definitely the guy for the job.

His teams actually got to the playoffs, which is way more than I can say for Ed Wade.

Looking ahead, whoever is hired as the team's general manager can do little in the way of serious changes next year. Practically the entire team is under contract including many middle relievers and the team's utility infielder. Let me draw up the chart of the organization as we stand right now, including ONLY players not eligible for free agency...

C- Mike Lieberthal, Carlos Ruiz

1B- Ryan Howard, Jim Thome

2B- Chase Utley, Tomas Perez

SS- Jimmy Rollins

3B- David Bell

LF- Pat Burrell

CF- Jason Michaels, Shane Victorino, Endy Chavez

RF- Bobby Abreu

SP- Brett Myers, Jon Lieber, Randy Wolf, Cory Lidle, Vicente Padilla, Robinson Tejeda

RP- Ryan Madson, Aaron Fultz, Rheal Cormier, Geoff Geary, Eude Brito, Aquilino Lopez, Pedro Liriano

Other Organization Talent: Matt Kata (IF), Chris Roberson (OF), Gavin Floyd (SP), Cole Hamels (SP)

I was tempted to place Jim Rushford above Endy Chavez, but I felt that might be pushing the issue and I am unsure if Rushford is a minor league free agent anyway. Roberson's a nice talent and all, but he's 25 and produced a 40/112 BB:K ratio in the Eastern League.

So what are the pressing issues? A number one starter would be nice, but there is NOTHING on the market in that area. The only possibility is garnering a future number one starter, and the Phillies already have two in Myers and Hamels. I think the best shot is hoping for continued progress from Brett Myers, who improved a great deal this season. The bullpen needs another arm, probably a closer. Billy Wagner would be welcome back but if not the Phillies should give serious consideration to B.J. Ryan, who is four years younger and holds a superior strikeout rate.

The offense looks relatively ok. I don't know what they'll do about Thome/Howard, and I can't comment without really knowing if the club can trade Thome or not. Just remember that for all the injuries and the .207 batting average, Thome still had a better OBP than Ryan Howard. The club should look at replacing David Bell, but he's better than he showed last year.

Whatever the Phillies do, several players are untradeable. I would prefer to see the new GM hire a new field manager, both because Charlie Manuel is lacking and because it is usually not a good idea to handcuff new people with members of the old guard. I do know the new GM should immediately set about firing Dallas Green.

2006 is Bell's last year of his contract, so they can possibly bring someone in to platoon with him. I think Manuel's future depends on if the new GM is promoted from within or is brought in from outside the organization. If it's Amaro or Arbuckle, expect Cholly to be there for 2006. If it's Hunsicker, Cashman, or Jim Duquette, I could see them having a new manager next year.

I considered a third base platoon, but found no left-handed third basemen on the free agency market. Russell Branyan would be a good acquisition if he could be had from the Brewers, but I'm not sure if they are willing. It is difficult to find good third base talent at times because it is an in-between position of offense and defense.

Am I wrong in being uncomfortable with the idea that an interim GM is going to be dealing with the Wagner situation? I am not fond of the idea of someone who is going to be in competition for the GM job being in control of negotiating with the star closer. Who knows if he will do something the can hurt the team to put a star next to his name (giving Wagner a guaranteed extra year, few million, FNTC, etc.).

Anyway, with all the contracts they already have, if they could get Ryan for a couple mil/yr. cheaper I would prefer that.

Do you really think Branyan would be that hard to get or were you saying it's the Phils who would be unwilling?
