iPod-like thing, but for video games

Recommended Posts

So, I was thinking, is there something like the iPod, but for video games? Like, with an iPod, you load the mp3's onto it and play them. Video games have roms and such, so (unless I'm wrong), there could be a similar device in which you load the roms onto it and can play them.

You can get them on a PDA, such as an iPaq. Also, some basic ones on a mobile phone.

However, because it's a tad illegal, I strongly doubt any company will make an out and out rom-player.

Yeah, but you gotta consider the legal side of it.

ROMS are technically illegal to have in the first place, so anyone who wanted to make something that was specifically just for these would have a lot of copyright issues.

Why not get a CD player instead of an mp3 player?

I don't think this (thread) is going to start going anywhere anytime soon, so I'll just drop it.

Similar arguments were made about mp3 players at first (IIRC). Why not just sell Roms on their website or something?

Then why not get a GBA/DS/PSP

Because charging $20 for a game you made years ago, and just repackaged should be price gouging? (At least, for the GBA side of things..)

True, but if you're gonna charge for ROMs, why not just get a second hand game off eBay.

This thread is going nowhere. We should forget it ever happened.

Although I still reccomend an iPaq as the best option.

People can use the argument that they use the iPod for their ripped CD's. Apple masks any illegal activity by allowing iPod users to purchase legal copies of most songs.

There's nothing legal at all about emulation. The general law brought by the emulator creators is that you can only play the game if you own the hard copy of the game itself. If that is the strongest argument that emulation has, there's no way that something legal will come out.

Just get a PSP. It's the closest thing you'll ever get to the real deal without getting into trouble.
