No kidding. The quality of games on TV is rapidly eroding to the point where I feel like I'm watching out of habit rather than out of desire. Where with college ball there is usually at least one really good game on at any given time on Saturday, even though there might be three or four bad ones on. And occasionally you get a day that's loaded with great games, which never seems to happen in the NFL anymore.

It's what I call the Ravenization of the NFL. Believe me, the Ravens winning the Super Bowl with their particular style of ugly play hurt the league immensely. Now everyone just loads up on defense and nobody can score, nobody can do shit. And the result are such anti classics as that Cowboys/Seahawks game today, or the Ravens/Bears.

 

That said, the NY/Denver game today was chillling. At least the finish was. It was the sort of finish that goes a long way in defining Eli's career. Watching it I had no doubt he was going to lead them to that comeback win.

 

At least I got to see the finish...till then they were showing that god awful Bears/Ravens game that was 10-6.

The Ravens winning the Super Bowl back in 2000 only set that trend for maybe a year or two. You could also blame it on the Super Bowl winners since then, the Patriots and Bucs, because - GASP - defense DOES win championships. The problem with today's game, especially this year, is the ridiculous amount of screen time referees are getting now. Everyone's getting called for penalties you never saw before, and every other play is getting flagged, and bringing down the quality of the games little by little.

 

I mean, at first I thought, well maybe it's just because the Packers suck and it sucks watching NFL football knowing my team won't do shit, but I've felt that in the past couple years as well, and was still able to watch the games. This year, it's just insufferable. Boring, uninteresting teams playing boring, uninteresting football seem to be the ones winning the games, and outside of a select few REALLY good or REALLY bad teams, every team seems to be mired around .500. Like Slayer noted earlier in the thread, for all the shit the NFC North is getting from being a shit division, many other divisions aren't much better. Here's the current standings to further drive home my point:

Unless some teams make a drastic turnaround, it's pretty clear cut judging by the records of each team at this point, who has the best shot at the postseason (Colts, Bengals, Steelers, Jags, and Broncos in the AFC, Seattle, the NFC East and NFC South minus New Orleans in the NFC), and who just totally stinks at this point.

I definitely think it's become a referee's game. It seems like every spectacular reception I see this season, I just expect it to be called back. I still love watching certain teams, primarily The Bengals, Seahawks and Raiders, maybe the Eagles, (and LaDanian as a player) but the more I see 'dominating defenses' the more I think they're getting awfully soft calls. Maybe O-Lines are just getting sloppy, but I sorta doubt it. And it seems whenever a D makes a big hit, it's unintentional roughness. It just encourages stifling, unexciting play like the Steelers this and last year, and the Pats for a few years' past. Howie Long used to fishhook and stick his fingers in peoples' asses to get them to cough up the ball. Now we're in the oppossed direction.

Oh, and in the oppositte vein, I HATE the rule, i know it's been a few years, as long as I've been watching football, but that PI puts you up to the site of the PI. I hate it when a QB just bombs a ball and the CB's are afraid to cover a WR at the line, because they're afraid to get a PI. That's shit.

Vitamin X, that isn't what I meant. Yes I know defense wins championships. The thing is, it wasn't until the Ravens in 2000 that teams just said "Fuck offense" and just got a grinding D with jack shit in terms of a QB or anything. Sure, teams like the 85 Bears had awesome D but guess what? They could actually SCORE.

 

For all the hype Tom Brady gets I don't think the public at large views this guy as anything great, mainly because he seems like merely a more talented "game manager" QB along the lines of Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson. Which is more exciting: A ho hum game manager QB who gets his team in position for a 48 yard FG or a riverboat gambler like Manning or Favre who takes full command and either scores that late TD or goes down in a blaze of glory?

 

Hell, even the Colts this year have gotten away from being a remotely watchable team and had these 10-3 shitfests against the Jags or Browns. Kind of like they said "If you can't beat em, join em."

 

I know that was rambling but there was probably a point in there somewhere.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but Brady does pass for 300+ yards pretty often, so he is not just a game managing QB. He's just a good QB that limits his mistakes and happens to have receivers that could win the gold medal in sprinting.

Sure, Brady goes for 300 yards often of late since their running game has been nonexistant. What I meant is that in the ideal Belichick situation Brady is a game manager who does lots of nice, safe passes, doesn't turn it over, but doesn't necessarily do anything great. And otherwise puts the game in the hands of the defense. Brady is rarely in that do or die situation where he's down 6 with 2:00 left and HAS to get that TD. Most of Brady's "epic" drives are when the game is tied and there's no real pressure on him (the Rams SB, the Panthers SB, this year vs. the Steelers, etc.).

 

Just once I'd like to see a big game where Brady has to drive the length of the field and score that big TD, not just move it 30 yards and set up a Vinatieri FG. He needs that big time QB moment, know what I mean?

The Packers are killing me. They're 1-5, but they could easily be 5-1 as all their losses except for the opener against Detroit have been by 3 points or fewer Fuck. And now they've lost their best running back, Ahman Green, in addition to their best receiver, Javon Walker.

When you have such a money kicker like Vinatieri and all you need is a FG, why risk anything else? I know it isn't "exciting", but its worked for them so far. Brady did throw a game winning TD in the Denver game in 2003, but if you only need three points, you get the three points.

 

Though I do agree with what you guys are saying about the NFL this year; the play is a bit worse and the refs are throwing flags a bit too often for my taste. I'm actually finding more exciting games in college than pro this year.

I sometimes don't really know whether to blame the Pack's troubles necessarily on him or his offensive coordinator, who couldn't be more predictable. They've made some awful roster moves that have gotten them into the hole they're in, and it was bound to catch up to them eventually. Sherman has the third-best record in the NFL since he became head coach in Green Bay, only behind Andy Reid and Bill Belichick. Obviously things are changing this season, but the question is, who's out there that would be a better alternative? The only thing I could think of would be to fire Sherm and Rossley (the O.C.) and promote Jim Bates to head coach, let him bring in some guys. Maybe have Norv Turner as offensive coordinator, since he's really not capable of coaching a whole team on his own.
