Considering Cruz did not play center at all in Los Angeles, even while J.D. Drew and Milton Bradley were both out, I doubt he's holding center at all.

Burnett's agent -- Darek Braunecker -- told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick that his client is seeking a five-year contract this offseason. ... The Blue Jays were first on Burnett's free-agency tour, and he spent Wednesday visiting with the team and the city of Toronto. According to the Toronto Star, Burnett had dinner with Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. "I told him about the camaraderie we all have as pitchers and how well we communicate with the coaching staff,'' Halladay said. According to the Star, Burnett told reporters afterwards, during halftime of a Raptors NBA game he attended, that there seemed to be a "night and day'' difference between the Jays and the Marlins. ... The Toronto Sun reported earlier in the week that "unlike most free agents, Burnett, of North Little Rock, Ark., isn't drawn to the large-market eastern teams, such as the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox, or the sun of California, either with the Los Angeles Angels or the now headless Dodgers. Burnett, his friends say, would rather be under the radar, which would put the Jays in a position to entertain with their roughly $85 million budget." Burnett was 12-12 with a 3.44 ERA for the Marlins last season, and is 49-50 for his career.

The A.J. Burnett sweepstakes is going to get ugly and he's going to be so vastly overpaid I think the "winner" of it will really end up being a loser when they unload a Darren Dreifort like contract. If a team wants to improve it's starting pitching this offseason it needs to look for it in a trade. I can't wait to see when someone gives Jarrod Washburn $10+ million/year.

The problem this offseason is because of the ESPN television deal, the XM Radio contract, and other assorted incomes, it seems every team has $10-20 Million to spend this offseason. If teams don't overspend, they will miss out. We'll likely see some crazy contracts handed out.

Of course this could change, but from reading various reports it seems the Rafael Furcal sweepstakes is down to the Mets and Cubs. The Braves have no scheduled meetings with Furcal, thus pretty much guaranteeing he's leaving Atlanta.

 

Also, the Red Sox-Mets trade talk is reportedly back on with Manny going to the Mets for Mike Cameron and 2 of the following: Heilman, Petit, and Milledge.

I don't see how that deal would make sense for either team. The D'backs have Carlos Quinten and Conor Jackson on the way up, and the Sox have Kevin Youkilis.

Sorry, but I'm still in disbelief that the Cubs would go and re-sign two guys that many could've sworn were on their way out. Both are expendable, yet wanted to start. And god damn, let's not just re-sign them, let's give them multi-year deals!

 

I figured Hendry had learned his lesson from this season, but obviously not. Why not just re-sign Burnitz and whip up some new "Believe" bracelets while we're at it.

Yankees declined Tinos option because according to cashman, "we've got Andy Phillips waiting in the wings waiting for a chance."

 

Never ever thought I'd hear that. Not that Phillips doesn't deserve a chance, he was probably better than Tino the whole year take away that one week. It actually makes sence, as having Giambi and Tino both as lefties kind of messed things up. Phillips kills lefty pitching from what I've seen.

I wouldn't want Glaus on my team though, not with that contract. He was healthy last year but it seems like he's an injury waiting to happen.

Petagine wouldnt be a good everyday 1Bman seeing as he is 35 and has bad knees. They need to get younger.

 

Also, Trading Manny is a horrible move...Unless you WANT to tank the next couple years and waste Ortiz's prime. While Manny was out for a weekend during the trade deadline Ortiz got walked basically every at-bat. Expect to see that alot more in 2006 with no Manny. There is no #3-4 hitter that the Sox can aquire than can come close to Manny's production...not to mention that most pitchers still fear the combo of Ortiz/Ramirez and thus it gives the rest of the lineup better pitches to hit as well.

 

You wanna see a huge dropoff in run scoring in Boston? Trade Manny.

well, now it appears the Braves are hell bent on resigning Furcal. So much for that news they were out of it.
