Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted October 30, 2005 I always like to bring up topics that the board hasn't seen before to freshen things up a little bit. The question I present to everyone today is .. drum roll please .. has anyone ever gotten lost in the woods before? If you've gotten lost somewhere else please feel free to share your experience(s) as well. Everyone who's driven a vehicle for awhile has probably gotten lost at one time or another so I ask for everyone not to clutter up the thread with driving stories so we don't steal the heat away from the other stories. That way we can also keep the thread fresh. That being said I'll recap a couple of stories that have happened to me before. I have been in the woods thousands of times and managed to get "lost" a couple of times. Now I know the tricks like following a barbedwire fence but that didn't stop me from getting momentarily lost a couple time. The first time was picking chanderail mushrooms. We were going from patch to patch - left, right, back diagonal and whatever other directions there are. Of course before you knew it we were lost. The second time was a couple of years ago when I left my buddy's place to walk home. I had gone there previously in the day all excited to watch the Kill BIll movie. Well, after being dissapointed out of my mind watching that I went home a few hours later. By that time it was dark outside and probably at least 11:00 PM. At that time I decided to walk home against the wishes of my friend. The walk was 5 or 6 miles and it was drizzling/raining out. Instead of taking the "long" way home with town lights lighting my way I decided to shave 10 or so minutes of time by cutting through the woods. Just a little, fun shortcut? Right? Wrong! I could've sworn I went the right direction and for awhile I wasn't too sure if I had or not. It was now pitch dark in the woods (on top of there being no light outside from the raining clouds) and the woods was thick. I was getting branches in my face, tripping over everything, going down steep hills and was wetter than a female thinking of WP. For anyone who doesn't know you get wet 20 times as quick walking in the woods when it's raining out than just walking unobstucted and having rain fall on you. I eventually made it to a 30 foot wide river and decided I had to cross it. I didn't really have to cross it but I just wanted to do it for the fun and challenge of it. There were lots of slippery rocks on the bottom and it was going pretty fast so I wanted to see if I could get across without falling in. Well, I tried and I did get across but not before falling in about 7 different times. I was now as wet as a female thinking of WP's buttocks and maybe as wet as I've ever been in my whole life. Now this river was the same river that goes behind home about a mile south of it. So home was still about 5 miles east and 1 mile north. However, at that time I was starting to second guess myself on wether I should go east or west. So I went neither and just went on my way through the woods. What way I'm not too sure anymore. After awhile I managed to find some train tracks in the woods beside a big body of water. Train tracks would lead me somewhere so I decided to walk on them for a bit. Of course, wouldn't you know it - a long train started to come and it forced me into going a different direction because I just wanted to keep on moving. I figured "wetness didn't matter to me anywhere" so I decided to go through yet another body of water I think to get to some lights I had seen in the distance. Eventually I made it to the backyard of somebody's house. A dog was barking at me but I don't think anyone noticed me there. If they did, they didn't say anything. I ran through the yard pretty quick because I didn't want to get noticed which is something that goes back to my shy nature. I walked on more track for awhile and finally got back to familiar territroy only to realise I had lost ground and was further away from home than I was before. 7 miles approximatley. From there on I jogged and walked my way. I couldn't hitchike because I'm too shy to do so. The trek was uphill a good bit and a signifigant wind was going against me so it made the walk/run pretty difficult. I made it home at about 3:00 or 4:OO in the morning and proceeded to go to bed. My driver's lisence and bank card were soaked but still okay. The Kill Bill movie however did not make the journey and was destroyed. I tried to fix it but to no avail. Maybe just another reason why I have resentement for that movie. Anyway, I ended up sick for about a couple of weeks and ended up missing Backlash in Edmonton because of it. Still, it was a fun experience and I can always say I managed to make it past that river. A good tale for the young ones someday. The end. I feel sorry for animals who are shot by hunters. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 31, 2005 I got hopelessly lost at Bonnaroo for about four hours. I was tripping balls, completely covered in mud, and trying to find one dark green and gray tent among about 400,000 other tents on a 600 acre venue. In the dark. In the rain. With no flashlight. I eventually sat down with some guys and started drinking for the second time that day, and ended up walking back to my tent around daybreak, leaning on some girl who was equally shitfaced, and singing "Camarillo Brillo" with me. The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2005 I have been in the woods thousands of times and managed to get "lost" a couple of times. Now I know the tricks like following a barbedwire fence Never, in all my life, has anyone ever told me "If you get lost in the woods, look for a barbed-wire fence, and follow it". I mean, I've heard about following rivers downstream or whatever, using tree moss to find north, hug a tree, etc. Never has anyone ever hinted at "find a barbed wire fence and follow it". I mean, if there's barbed wire fences around in the first place, you can't be THAT lost anyway.
Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted November 1, 2005 After years and years pass away fences will get broken down. Little trees grow up to be big tress and than woods. Often you won't even see remnants of the fence posts themselves. The barbed wire itself will be rusted brown and become less visible as it becomes camaflouged. Often you will only see 1 strand or none at all as the ground will now be over the fence. It becomes something that is very easy to trip over. Going back to the nonvisible factore this is something that skidoo (winter's really bad because snow will be covering fences) and 4 wheelers have to look out for at is so easy to crashing into a fence and have an arm or a neck torn off your body. I have heard so many horror stories.
River City Rocker 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2005 Yes... When I was a kid, I lived on a dead end street, and there was this forest just north of the end of the street. Someone had blazed a trail that cut through part of the woods, and a lot of people used it whenever they wanted to walk to the nearby Village Pantry store. One afternoon, I noticed that there was another path leading in a different direction. I was intrigued. So, I went home, said I was going for "a long walk", and returned to the woods to follow this new path, fully expecting to be led to another neighborhood a mile or so to the west of my house. Well, before I knew it, I was lost. After an hour or so (it seemed like forever) of wandering, I noticed some houses in the distance, so I walked towards them, and I realized that I was about three streets over from my own street. I stumbled home just as my mom and sister were leaving to look for me. Later on, someone plowed a dirt path from the end of my street and I followed it to where it emptied out in that neighborhood I had expected to end up when I first got lost in the woods. I had assumed that the city was extending my street to wrap around the woods, linking it to another subdivision. A few years later, the city erected a large fence around the entire forest...
