bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 SNL Review- Eva Langoria/Korn Tribute- Eddy Guerrero- Eddy was one of my favourite wrestlers. He was outstanding in the ring, and could also cut great promos and be hilarious or get an angle or promo over when needed. I loved his work with Edge, Benoit and Angle, and will always remember being at MSG and seeing him and RVD kill each other in a ladder match. I’m glad he was able to come all the way back from his personal problems, and I’ll never forget that excellent match he had with Brock at No Way Out. RIP Eddy, you were a great man. Sports Report- Leafs- The Leafs have really turned it around this week. They’ve gotten smarter about taking penalties, and Bryan McCabe has just been on fire recently. Sundin coming back seems to have energised the team. Canucks- They also had a much better week. Bertuzzi has been playing well recently, and getting Cloutier back can only be positive. Even though he’s my favourite player, Trevor Linden’s production is starting to be a concern. Nets- Well they could be the Raptors! Kristic had a really good week and really helped in the absence of any great production from VC. I really wish Frank would give Antoine Wright some playing time though. Saints- A bye week means they didn’t lose. Ohhh but tomorrow they’re getting raped by the Pats. Mailbag!!!!!- Hey Bob- This is Ken Hayashi from Voy again. I have two-part question for you. First, I thought the Eddy tribute video on RAW was classy and very touching . I don’t mean to be nitpicky, but I disagree with the songs used to score the video. WWE featured Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt’ (probably as a reference to Walk The Line) in the tribute video shown on RAW and ‘Here Without You’ by 3 Doors Down in the tribute video posted on WWE.com. In my opinion, there are a number of better, more contemporary songs out there that would’ve been more appropriate in saying goodbye to Eddy. If I were in the WWE media department, I would’ve scored Eddy’s homage with a much more poignant song- such as ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ by Green Day, ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay, ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own’ by U2, or even ‘Slipped Away’ by Avril Lavigne. What do you think? Do you think any of these songs would’ve been more fitting in the celebration of Eddy’s life? Second, if you were a professional wrestler working for Vince, what kind of in-ring style would you specialize in? Would you want to be a face or a heel? What would be your finishing move? What entrance music would you use? Would you want pyro as part of your ring entrances? What kind of pose would you invent? What would be your most famous catchphrase in your promos? For me, my wrestling style would be something along the lines of Jericho/Angle/Benoit/HBK/Edge/Shelton/Eddy. I would want to be a face most of the time, since I don’t have the personality to act like an asshole. My finishing moves would be a Crippler Crossface variation of Bob Backlund’s Crossface Chickenwing, a Liontamer-like variation of the Texas Cloverleaf, and the running enzuigiri that Jericho sometimes does. Zach Gowan is long gone, so maybe I could use his old entrance music as my own. And I want tons of pyro in my ring entrances- similar to Big Dave’s pyro- except with more sparks. As for a pose- I’d do something like HBK does- expect I’d get down on one knee instead of both. And my catchphrase would be something like ‘You think you’re special?’ Later, Ken Given that they had less then a day to do a video for him, you really can’t nitpick on the choice of music. Hurt is a great song, and I have no problem with it being used. Plus it’s a better video package song then Slipped Away. If I was a wrestler working for Vince, I would shoot myself on the head. If I was a wrestler period, I’d want to be a heel and I’d want my finishing move to be something cheap as hell. For entrance music, I think something so not wrestling music like U2’s October would be hilarious. My gimmick would be someone who is a wrestler who doesn’t get wrestling. So my promos and stuff would all be something that would make no sense in wrestling. No pyro, it’s too loud. Wanna be in the mailbag???? Email me at [email protected] And now the review..... Cold Opening Cast- Darrell Hammond, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Chris Parnell, Amy Poehler, Jason Sudeikis Thoughts- First of all….no WAKE UP HAND JIVE!~ from David Gregory? Colour me disappointed. The skit would’ve been an automatic **** if it had that. Even though it lacked the WAKE UP HAND JIVE!~, this was still a solid Cold Opening. Parnell as Wolf Blitzer instantly cracked me up, and Forte mentioning being double patriotic got a laugh from me as well. The opening bit with Darrell as Brit Hume was pretty pointless, much like Darrell’s current tenure on SNL. This was the usual solid cold opening, and I still Forte’s Bush. ***1/4 Monologue Cast- Eva Langoria, Horatio Sanz, Parnell Thoughts- I gotta say, even though she looked good the rest of the show, Eva didn’t look that great here. Kudos to SNL for not having the whole cast hit on the host. The opening bit with Parnell was funny, and I laughed a lot at Horatio walking on stage, hearing Eva talk about stereotypes, and slowly walk off. That was good stuff. But that Mary Alice/Don Pardo stuff was monologue death and it was just horrible. I just wish they hadn’t killed the good thing they had going. ** Smoke Alarm Cast- Parnell, Armisen, Forte, Rachel Dratch, Sanz, Kenan Thompson, Finesse Mitchell, Jason Sudeikis Thoughts- This was actually pretty funny. I liked Fred as the ultra serious fireman and this was a good concept. I have to say that I think I’d be more likely to get out of the house if I had some annoying 80s synthesizer music playing. The stuff with Fred telling people to get out of the house ASAP and Parnell talking about enjoying the music was good stuff. I also enjoyed the little bit with Finesse and Kenan at the end. ***1/4 Spammies Cast- Langoria, Dratch, Thompson, Parnell, Poehler, Hader, Kristen Wiig Thoughts- This was a pretty bad idea for a skit, but they tried. Kenan looking like Prince Nana instantly cracked me up. Parnell’s acceptance speech was really funny. The rest of this was pretty lame, which was pretty expected. I mean Rachel as Rita Rudner?? That’s out there. ** Deephouse Dish Cast- Langoria, Thompson, Poehler, Armisen, Dratch, Hader Thoughts- Ummmm what was this? Kenan was funny as always. Amy looked good but I had no idea what the hell her bit was supposed to be. Langoria talking about having lower back pain…but still going to the club was hilarious, and for some reason, it kept making me laugh. I also liked her talking about eating a third fish sandwich. The rest of this was pretty bad. Unfortunately, the HNIC game was Blackhawks v. Oilers, so I couldn’t even flip over. *1/2 Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Cast- Forte, Poehler, Armisen, Andy Samberg Thoughts- These ads creep the heck out of me. Forte was hilarious here and I loved him just going off on Amy. I also laughed when Bill Hader called him a dick. Welcome to the show Bill. Word of advice: If you want to make me laugh really hard, say cock. It’s funnier. Anyway, thought the ending was a bit flat, but Forte was awesome. ***1/4 Needlers Cast- Langoria, Seth Meyers, Poehler, Samberg, Sudeikis, Wiig Thoughts- Even though it’s getting to be too samey, the Needlers is still funny. The audience didn’t seem to be to enjoy to this, which was disappointing in a way. I love the zings (or is that burns?) that the couple always toss to each other, even though that Oprah one was pretty bad. But yea, some great lines from both. I loved Seth roleplaying his wife and going to the open bar. Seth saying their anniversary was in the “Spring” was also really funny. If they can come up with a better ending then them always going back and having sex, then I might like this a little more. This was good, but they do need to change it up a bit. ***1/4 Variety Vault Cast- Langoria, Hammond, Armisen, Sanz, Poehler, Hader, Wiig Thoughts- Well this was certainly out there. Hader was okay as Vincent Prince, Darrell as Clark Gable was stupid, and Langoria’s timing seemed off as Lucy. I have to give her credit though, I thought Wiig was hilarious as Judy Garland, and I liked Price’s expressions to her drunken and/or drugged out tomfoolery. Horatio’s Hitchcock impression didn’t work for me either, but at least he didn’t laugh. So yea, way to go Wiig! **1/4 Korn “Twisted Transistor” Thoughts- I like Korn and all but this was not very good. The song is dull, and I kept flipping back to CBC to see why some guy on Chicago got ejected. Leave it to CBC to not show a single replay. My tax dollars at work. Korn can do better, and this was a total phone-in job. ** Weekend Update Cast- Fey, Poehler, Armisen, Dratch Thoughts- Tina needs to realise that Weekend Update is not the Daily Show, and that despite being a smug bastard, Jon Stewart is much funnier then she ever will hope to be. I mean seriously, that was embarrassing. Update was really weak this time out. There were a few jokes that were funny, but not enough to make me like this. What was surprising was that the commentaries weren’t that good either. Fred as Steve Jobs didn’t work for me, probably because I don’t own an IPod. And Rachel Dratch’s bit was pretty painful. So there were a few good jokes, but this was not so good overall. ** Desperate Housewives Cast- Langoria, Dratch, Meyers, Poehler, Wiig, Sudeikis, Hader Thoughts- Rachel Dratch playing Eva Langoria is wrong on so many levels. It’s like the time they had Maya Rudolph play Kristin Davis. Eva looked really hot as Teri Hatcher. Seth was hilarious as Nicolette Sheridan and totally made this skit watchable. The people who played the Housewives weren’t that funny (probably since I’ve ever seen the show) but the constant Housewives demands and Seth made this a good solid skit. I know he’s writing supervisor and all, but giving him only two skits a night is criminal. **1/2 Trapped in the Closet Cast- Langoria, Mitchell, Thompson Thoughts- As someone who always watches R. Kelly’s performance when the VMAs are reran, it was nice to see SNL acknowledge this horrible abomination and make a skit about it. The bit at the beginning with Langoria and Finesse didn’t work but I loved the ending with Kenan as the alien being Finesse’s father. The skit ended too suddenly, but it was good enough while it lasted. *** Germans Who Kill Klaus Cast- Langoria, Meyers, Armisen, Hader Thoughts- While I’m all for Seth getting increased airtime, not in some stupid skit about German singers trying to hide the fact that they killed a guy. I mean they could’ve at least said Klaus Jewish or something. This was pretty bad. ½* Korn “Freak on a Leash” Thoughts- I didn’t expect this at all! Freak is my favourite Korn song, and they did a great live performance here. Jonathan Davis kicked ass, especially the “Boom Nah Eema” parts. I’m glad Korn took the Sheryl Crow route and played an awesome older song instead of a lame second song. Easily one of the best mg performances of the season. ***3/4 Eva Langoria has problems with poop Cast- Langoria Thoughts- I’ll give credit to Langoria for making fun of herself, but then she wore a #9 tshirt in the goodnights. I get it, you date Tony Parker. She should’ve gone out with Manu Giboli. That guy is great at eating pussy. Anyway, some of the poop jokes were funny. Some weren’t. It’s the last skit of the night, can’t say I was expecting too much. ** The Bottom Line- Avg. skit was **.43 making this a thumbs in the middle show. A lot of skits were pretty medicore, so nothing brought the average down too much. Re-airing two old commercials that were good was cheap, but it worked in bringing up the average. The show was also helped out by a great performance by Korn. Eva Langoria did absolutely nothing, so I can’t really fault her, even though she didn’t impress me in the slightest. A lot of the skits here just once again didn’t seem to have any chance of being good, and it’s really hurting the show right now. Dane Cook is funny, but I don’t know how well he’ll work in skits. We should get a good monologue though. Thumbs in the Middle
Ted the Poster 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Dane Cook seems a little out there. I love the guy's act, but why is he hosting?
razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Last week too many sex jokes this week too many song parodies. SNL should of made the R. Kelly skit longer. The German skit was just a waste of time.....if Meyers needs to be on the show then bring back the ZINGER~
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Dane Cook is "hot right now" in terms of comedy. At least, that's what Rolling Stone sez. I guess his comedy album is the best selling comedy album in a long time. I like his act, so I might give it a looksee.

I'm with Meatwad, I think that he may do well in skits, but they need to really play to his strengths.
