Lions fire Mariucci

Recommended Posts

I'd say it had more to do with Matt Millen's personel decisions. Harrington has shown glimpses here and there but he still doesn't have an O-line capable of protecting him long enough to even take a 5-step drop. Charles Rogers has been a bust, Roy Williams while producing good numbers has had injury problems, and drafting Mike Williams may have looked good on paper but it was a stupid move.

I'd say if the next head coach fails then you'll see Millen finally get the boot too.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Mooch go coach a college team either.

It's possible they could keep Bates as defensive coordinator rather than give them the head coaching gig. I read an article recently on Yahoo or ESPN, I forget which, which talked about Bates, Monte Kiffin, and Jim Johnson, all great defensive coordinators who haven't received head coaching gigs and don't really care too much about getting one.

I personally would just fire Sherman, Rossley, and the receivers and quarterbacks coach. Edgar Bennett is doing fine as the running backs coach, as is Larry Beightol, the offensive line coach. The defensive staff has done a great job this year as well, so I'd want to keep them intact. But if Sherman goes, Bates might go as well, since the decision to bring in Bates was Sherman's, not Thompson's...

Joke.

Serious question though... whenever members of the "Holmgren family" are brought up in discussion, it's always from his time in GB. Has anyone from his Seattle staff ever been considered for head coaching positions? (Mike Sherman doesn't count)

I think you could also say that Mooch's play-calling sucked ass considering the personnel that the Lions had. With two or three talented recievers depending on how many bong hits Charles Rogers took the previous week, he should have taken more shots downfield. The West-coast style offense doesnt really work as well in today's nfl with 300 lb defensive lineman who run 4.7 40 yard dashes and 250lb linebackers who run like defensive backs.

from Rotoworld.com

Speaking with emotion on the NFL Network, Lions Pro Bowl cornerback Dry Bly said most of Detroit's problems stem from one person - the team's quarterback.

"They should have fired guys on this team a long time ago... I feel like there is one guy in particular who I felt like is the cause of this whole thing. That's just how it is," Pressed further on who that one person is, Bly said, "It's not hard to figure out. The quarterback here has been bad. He hasn't gotten the job done since I got here. Y'all just see Sundays, but I've been a part of this every day for three years... practices. You see how the guys practice and the practices have been bad... I really don't believe coach would have gotten fired if Jeff (Garcia) didn't get hurt."

Millen and Mooch were "tight" buddy's IIRC and this move reminds me of Flip Saunder getting dumped by Kevin McHale after the Minny Timberwolves blew it last season. With friends like Millen and McHale, who needs enemies?

Millen should have been dumped before Mooch.

So, let me get this straight:

The Lions dump Harrington because he was a bust of a QB. This was despite the fact that both of his head coaches were fired, he had a team of young, injury prone wide receivers, and wasn't even given a good running until they got Kevin Jones last year.

The Lions also fire Mariucci, despite the fact that he had Joey Harrington as a QB, along with everything mentioned above.

And yet, the guy who hired the coach and drafted most of the offense gets a five year extension because he did such a wonderful job?

I just don't get the logic there, unless the Lions are trying to lose, in which case, I am sure they will for many, many more years to come. Well, at least they're consistent.

Bring back Mortinwheg!

The Ford family and the Bidwell family compete with one another on a yearly basis for "Most Incompetent Family of Owners" ever since taking over their respective teams.

The Lions offense sucks. The play calling has been terrible all year and the line is pretty bad. They have talented recievers and Kevin Jones can be a very good back. With the right system in place I think Harrington could be an adequate quarterback given the weapons they have. They shouldnt be this bad since last years team won 6 games and lost 5 games by 6 or less.
