You know, not speaking for people as a whole but I've really noticed something about the people I know and the people that go to my school, that being white isn't cool anymore.

 

Let me explain: Around here, if someone is white but is also someting else like half spanish (cuban, columbian, dominican, etc.) then they'll just totally milk their spanish side and act like they're nothing else. They'll bask in theit nationalistic pride. Why is this? Why is the fact that they're also half german, irish, polish, greek etc. a bad concept to them? Nationalistic pride as a whole has gone over the hills these days. People wear the colors of their country's flags, wear clothes that say their country on them etc. I have no problem with being proud of who you are but goddamn. It's not like these people were born there either. What happened with people just being people these days? Now we got people bragging about their native homeland and crap.

 

Something else I've noticed latley that is similar is that I've seen a lot of people who are one race or religion hanging out together. Jews with jews, asians with asians, blacks with blacks, etc. This isn't a racist thing, it's just something I've seen a lot of recently.

 

For me, I'm half black and half german myself and I don't go around bragging that I'm "down with the brown" or anything like that because who am I kidding?

It's because it's not cool to be "elite" in America. Throughout most of human history, it has been "cool" to be part of the ruling class or born rich. In America, though, the only elitism is "reverse elitism." For example, George W. Bush emphasizes his rough and tumble Texan side, when he was actually born into wealth (obviously) in Connecticut. There are lots of examples of this in American culture (e.g. "Horatio Alger" stories; pulling oneself up from one's bootstraps).

I hate reverse elitism. Hate it. I want my Republicans to be elitist bastards. That was the initial appeal of the party for me: "We're smarter, richer, whiter, better. WE OWN YOU." Now it's all this faux-populism, a President instructed by his handlers to clumsily grope his way through the English language like a 12-year-old getting to second base, and perpetuating the idea that "you is not more smarter than the alls of us anyways." It kills me that the "it's okay to read books, you know," and "knowing how to speak French doesn't really mean you hate America" contingent is represented by the New England Asshole wing of the Democratic Party. I don't like them either.

I'm part Portuguese. PART. I don't run around waving the flag of Portugal all day, or even speak the language. I take pride in the fact that my grandfather was Portuguese simply because I take pride in knowing my grandfather since he was a good man, and I hope to be as close as possible to how he was as a person when I'm older.

I was actually quite surprised to learn Czech was conservative at all to begin with at first.

 

Anyway, I don't think there even is such a thing as "white". Blacks and hispanics at least have a more common culture to refer back to (this holds true much more for hispanics than blacks, though). European descendants have such a variety of cultures that even when it comes together, it's still awkward, and thus looks very strange in this country. I don't think there's anything wrong with people identifying with whatever mixed heritage/nationality they may have, unless it's just so mixed and so far away that they're by all means American. Even though I was born here and look white, I still identify with my culture, because me and my two cousins are the only three people in my family not born in Cuba or in Spain. If/when I have kids, it might still somewhat be okay for them to do so a little bit, but my grandkids won't have that right anymore. That is all, of course, depending on if I stay in this country for the long haul, anyways.
