Justice Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 I dunno, I'm bored and we don't see anything on this niche board other than a little honest discussion and a bunch of partisan hackery anymore anyways, so something a little more thought-based: If you could build the UN from the ground up, what would you do and how would you do it?
Dr. Tyler; Captain America Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Can't be done unless countries are willing to give up some autonomy. An international body is pointless if it doesn't have power, and most -- if not all -- countries are entirely unwilling to submit to a higher world government-esque body. If countries are willing, a world government could, theoretically, be effective. But, it's not likely that it will happen any time soon, if ever.
Justice Posted December 4, 2005 Author Report Posted December 4, 2005 Well, I wasn't asking for 'realism', I was just sort of asking what changes you would make and such if you could, to mold it into the body you believe it should be.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Well, then, I would do exactly that: make it a body that actually does, in fact, bind its members to its resolutions. I'd essentially make all of the world's leaders simply governors, so to speak, and allow the UN to unilaterally enforce environmental and labor factors to even the capitalistic playing field. If the regulations (minimum wage, environmental factors, taxes, etc.) are universal throughout the world, it would dramatically help the economies of, well, all countries. There would have to be a mechanism for resolving disputes either militarily or diplomatically, and it would have to be binding. Are there opportunities for tyranny in a world government? Absolutely, but then again, there are some great possibilities for economic expansion and improving the overall standard of life throughout the world. The thing is, unless the UN becomes something like this, it's useless (like it is now). The thing is, I'm sort of not sold on world government myself. But, in a perfect world, this is what would happen.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 (edited) For my above theory to work, by the way, you'd still have to have a very federal sort of system. The UN would have to show enormous restraint and allow cultural rules and laws to be determined by the individual states, but the UN would HAVE to be the be all and end all of economic and military matters. Otherwise, no one would agree to it. Yeah, and you'd probably need to demilitarize the entire world as a stipulation for joining, now that I think about it. Damn, now that's gonna be fun. Justice Posted December 5, 2005 Author Report Posted December 5, 2005 Justice has officially became Gollum. Stupid, fat liberalses.
CheesalaIsGood Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 Justice has officially became Gollum. liberalses. Sweet! I have a new word to use to describe myself. Sucks that I can't actually say it without sounding like I have a lisp. BTW, isn't partisian hackery half the fun of being "civic minded"?
BruiserKC Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 The UN needs to stop putting nations in charge of certain committees and such that make no sense. For example...putting Cuba or Iran at the head of the Human Rights committees is ridiculous. They want to give everyone a turn...but this ain't Little League people.
daileyxplanet Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I'd have it like on Histeria (a "history" show brought to you by those who gave you Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain) they had the UN-Real World with ancient world leaders like Caeser and Cleopatra, et al. Does anyone remember this?
Art Sandusky Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I'd actually be cool with the UN not existing and the various continental/cultural groups (EU, Arab League, alliances like that) taking its place and acting as supernations that work together. A real world government could be possible down the line, but we won't pull that off until the regions of the world each get themselves in order first. Continuing economic globalization and the increasing ethnic mix of people in this world will lead to an all-encompassing government eventually, I feel. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but certainly within the next 250 years (assuming we haven't blown each other away by then or an asteroid hasn't taken out the planet).
CanadianGuitarist Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I'd have it like on Histeria (a "history" show brought to you by those who gave you Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain) they had the UN-Real World with ancient world leaders like Caeser and Cleopatra, et al. Does anyone remember this? Vaguely. I'd be fine with semi-large groups (EU, OAU, etc.). If you think about it, while the intentions are good, does the UN actually do anything? At least groups like the two I just mentioned are at least based within a member nation and not halfway around the world... The idea of a one world government, as Kotenjunge eluded to, is intriguing, but I just don't see it happening. Look at a "country" like Somalia. It's the size of Alberta and there's what, 7 different groups vying for power? Maybe in our grandkids lifetimes, though.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 That global government shit makes me nervous. I think it should be decided by a game of cards or arm wrestling.
CanadianGuitarist Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 That global government shit makes me nervous. I think it should be decided by a game of cards or arm wrestling. Or failing that, have a giant Royal Rumble with all the world leaders. Suddenly, the West won't be looking down on the warlords who run third world countries any more....hmmm.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 No, televize it so people get interested in politics. When all negotiation has failed, put elbows on the table and flex. Imagine if say, Arafat could've just arm-wrestled various Israeli leaders.
