I don't like having a player's number retired by an entire league. A team? Sure. But not a league.

I don't mind it for special players/circumstances ... I didn't mind it with Jackie Robinson or Wayne Gretzky, but as awesome as Lemieux is/was, I don't think of him as worthy of a league-wide number retirement.

Nobody would wear 66, anyway.

This is what should happen: the teams should unofficially retire 66. Nothing formal, no 66 up in the rafters in all the buildings. Just a simple, unspoken understanding that no one will wear that number again.

I don't even think Robinson's number should have been retired league-wide. I don't care that it is, but it just seems lame to have the Devil Rays and Mariners hoist that jersey in their home field. Just having it in Dodger Stadium would be more meaningful, imo, because the Dodgers took the "chance" in brining Jackie into the league.

Wow, I didn't even make a pseudo-racist remark; I hope I'm not losing my edge.

Speaking of retired numbers, the Devils are going to be retiring Danyeko and Stevens' numbers over the next few months.

I also hope that when he retires, the Canucks retire #16 of Trevor Linden.

Lemieux not worthy of league wide retirement? That is ludicrous. I don't like to play the if games, but IF Lemieux was healthy it is not a stretch to say he would be above Gretzky in the record books, at all.

He was on a terrible team for about the first 5 years he was in Pittsburgh as well.

Lemieux, stats be damned, was the most physically gifted hockey player that I have ever seen put on a pair of skates.(With due respect to Howe, "Rocket" Richard etc since I never saw they play).

I know Lemieux wasn't healthy his whole career and he didn't reach Gretz's stats, but IF he was healthy I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have come close if not pass Gretzky in overall points.

Mario's gonna get his number retired leaguewide, but I don't think anyone would want to wear it anyway. You wear a unique number like 66, you have to be just as good as Mario was, which no one will be for a long time.

Yeah and IF Alex Daigle hadn't been a lazy fuck, he could have passed Gretz on many of the all-time lists.

I've said it before, it absolutely sucks that we only got to see Le Magnifique play in a total of 889 games. That's criminal. But just because he got sick and injured a lot doesn't mean that we should inflate his numbers and impact anymore than we already do.

Mario is one of the best that the game has ever seen, truly. So is Bobby Orr. He revolutionized the position of defenseman. By your argument, IF Orr had been able to escape the pain of completely ravaged knees, he might be the all-time leader in points. So let's retire the #4. Gordie Howe is one of the best to have ever played. Let's retire #9.

I think they went a bit overboard with retiring Gretzky's number league-wide because it opens up a big can of worms (why isn't Orr or Howe's number retired league-wide?) but it doesn't mean that we should repeat the mistake. People will remember Mario as what he was; He had a brilliant career that was unfortunately overshadowed by injury and illness, but was one of the most gifted players ever.

I wasn't inflating numbers. Like I said I don't like to the play the WHAT IF game, I was just seriously posting my theory. Nothing more nothing less.

Hell, I admit I'm biases being a Penguins fan. I have no problem with Gretzky or Orr or Howe or any of those being considered to be better than Lemieux, they are all interchangeable to me.

I just feel we, as hockey fans, were cheated out of seeing Lemieux play out a full 21 year career with no injuries or setbacks.

I didn't mean to open up a can of worms on the whole number retiring thing, I was just responding to an earlier post saying that Gretz should be retired as it is, but Mario's shouldn't be because he wasn't on that level.

I know what I have seen with my two eyes, I will say it again, IMO Lemieux was the most physically gifted player I have ever watched in my life. I feel honored to have seen him in his prime, even if I was very young at that time.

So I won't do any more what if's, to me, Mario has impacted me more than anyone else in hockey history, he was someone I looked up to as a kid, and I guess it just sucks to see him go again, and this time KNOW it's for good.

I think it would be easier to retire Mario's number leaguewide if he had played for more than one team like Gretzky did.

I think that is another thing that made Mario special, much like Stevie Y he has played his whole career for one team. He lives in Pittsburgh, his kids go to school here, and he loves the city.

I think it gives him the quiteness that going back to Montreal or similar wouldn't give him.

That's why it pisses me off so much when guys hang around trying to win the Cup on a different team than the one everyone will remember them being with. Bourque is different.

Pittsburgh traded Dick Tarnstrom to the Edmonton Oilers for Jani Rita and Cory Cross.

Thats an awful trade in my minds.

For Who? Tarnstrom has been terrible this year, although to be fair the whole defense have. Tarnstrom is terrible in his own end, and other than in 03-04 hasn't been able to put the puck in the net consistently.

Cross is a meh, but Rita is still young and COULD turn out to be something if he is brought along slowly.

I think Cross was just thrown in to even up salary anways.

The Pens would have gotten nothing for Dicky T after this year anyways since he was a UFA.

Anyone see Giguere EXPLODE on Smyth last night?

Good game all around, but this was a little surprising.

Yeah, did you see when they showed Burke on screen?

The Kings are finally starting to get healthy, Aaron Miller, Roenick and Eric Belanger will all be back by Monday.

The Ducks are having an open meet and greet with the fans where the GM will answer questions.

I have a hockey question. This has only happen once this season. If there are two goaltender who play the entire game and not allowed any goals, do they both get credited with a shut out? I guess what I am trying to ask is, do shootouts count in goalie stats?

I'm watching the Leafs self-implode/actually play some hockey. This is crazy. They're actually doing well tonight when they're not giving up goals.

Hope Quinn has learned that Telly needs more starts. Eddie's just not cutting it (although Telly ain't doing too much better tonight either).

Did they announce this? I thought they had a "no retired numbers" policy in Jersey

I'm not certain that all of baseball should retire #42. The Dodgers and Mets have to, by all means, but for expansion teams with no history, maybe they should get to honor the number by letting someone deserving in their club wear it. Build their own history. LeBron James is wearing Jordan's 23.

No, they don't. Shootout goals count in team stats, but not individual stats. Kiprusoff got a shutout in Calgary's 1-0 shootout loss to Philly last month.
