CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Edmonton also traded Tony Samelainen to Chicago for Spacek. Don't forget Tarnstrom led the Pens in points last year....this is a playoff-calibre blue line for the Oil. In other NHL news, the league has expanded into....Montreal. Apparently there's a team there now. It's not so much they lost to the Sens, it's how they played against them.

Trust me when I say, Tarnstrom isn't worth diddly squat at this point, I know the Pens didn't get much back for him, but he would have walked as an UFA at the end of this year anyways. He has been horrid in his own end this year, and has not even come close to putting up anywhere near the points he had in 03-04, and has been a healthy scratch a ton this year. As bad as this Pens D is, and trust me it's bad, to be a healthy scratch you have to be horrid. Maybe he will get a jumpstart in Edmonton, just like he did in Pitts a few years back. Brush with Greatness 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Along with (AHL) playoff-calibre goaltending. It's tough to say for certain, but this honestly looks like the move of a team who is going to deal another defenseman (ie. Marc-Andre Bergeron) in hopes of acquiring a #1 goalie. It would be smart to keep all six (Pronger, Bergeron, Staois, Smith, Tarnstrom, Spacek) just to offset the physical wear that Pronger is taking right now which, coupled with the Olympics, would leave him dead for the stretch drive. Either way, this move helps them. They lose a bit of potential in Jani Rita, who may have just needed a different environment. Tarnstrom doesn't bring a lot, but they could throw him back in as a PP quarterback. This would give Pronger a bit less playing time. Despite lacklustre numbers this year for Tarnstrom, he can still bring it on the PP, and the numbers have as much to do with Gonchar's presence as anything else. They also have the depth to keep him at the #5 or #6 spot so he shouldn't hurt them too much defensively.

Just don't rely on him to log 20+ minutes a game or anything like that. I don't know what happened to his shot on the PP this year either, he was a decent PP QB but not this year, and Gonchar has been worse at times so I don't blame the lack of number on Gonchar putting up massive points, because he hasn't. He had one great year here, but this year he has just been horrid in his own end. LIke I said the whole D has been horrible, but Dicky T was gonna walk at the end of this year since he is UFA, so the Pens tried to get something for him at this point. I hope he does well for your guys, just as I hope Rita may thrive in a different environment, because he should get more ice time than he did in Edmonton. Guest Report post Posted January 27, 2006 The Ducks are having an open meet and greet with the fans where the GM will answer questions. I wish the Kings held one of those. I'm fuming right now. I'd love to give Dave Taylor a piece of my mind, because they've got to be one of the only teams in the league not to have made a fucking deal yet, even though nearly the entire team has been hurt at some point this season. Fucking hate this coach, hate this GM.
Fartsauce 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Apparently the goalie rumours are starting back up again in Edmonton. Bob Mckenzie apparently was on some Ottawa radio show today and stated that Kevin Lowe was in talks to acquire Marty Biron. I could live with Biron, anything is better than what we have in net right now. As for the trades today, I wasn't overly excited about Tarnstrom or Spacek but was pleasantly suprised when both of them came over. I think Tarnstrom can be effective with limited minutes (put him mainly on the powerplay) As far as Spacek, I haven't seen him play many times but apparently can bring the offense. Either way, Cory Cross is gone and Ulanov is pretty much in the pressbox. Oilers improved today.
Guest Report post Posted January 27, 2006 That's why I'm pissed off. Everyone else is making moves besides the Kings.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Well...the Sabres (minus many of their best players at this point) played like absolute shit and still beat the Leafs 8-4 in Toronto. How'd that taste Leafs fan? 14 points behind us at this point. Taste's like bad General Managership I'd reckon... Anyway...I'm all for trading Biron for anything that we can put on the ice at this point. And I state this after Miller has played his worst game of the year. Soo many injuries. Soo many injuries. It's a joke to leave Biron sitting on the bench pulling his weiner while we call up more friggin guys from the AHL. Briere is still 2 months from returning. Connelly is as well. Dumont returned the other night after 2 months off...and our "Stars" like Chris Drury play far too hard to not expect some injury time. If we don't deal from the position of strength that has become our goaltending...we are beyond stupid. You might make it to the playoffs on heart alone...but you won't win there. Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 That's why I'm pissed off. Everyone else is making moves besides the Kings. It's hard to trade injured players. Your team plays inconsistently. The loss to the Sharks was bad considering the two short handed goals that Garon gave up. The Ducks will probably end up playing the good Kings over the weekend. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 I'm surprised that you didn't mention the forthcoming adjective drop in Anaheim, who will be known as the Anaheim Ducks next year, not the Might Ducks of Anaheim. I saw the headline on tsn.ca and was terrified it would be Los Angeles Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Boston's only two back of a playoff spot all of a sudden! the max 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Don't jinx it! I've been taping the games and watching them during my stretches of insomnia. They've been playing well since I started doing this, so I guess I'll keep it up.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 See, I was ready to give all the credit to Tim Thomas and his stellar play in net ... it turns out that the max's insomnia deserves as much credit as anyone. Kudos to you, the max. Zhamnov's injury has been good for the B's. His absence is giving more ice time to Boyes (who's playing very well) & Bergeron (who's the team's MVP at this point). Plus, it's really addition by subtraction to remove him from the line-up.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 When was the last time that both Montreal and Toronto has missed the playoffs in the same season? 1969-70. Of course, that was the season after the Leafs last won the Cup.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Wouldn't the 67-68 season be the season after the Leafs won the Cup? Talked to McCabe today, he said he's coming back either Monday or Tuesday.

Boston's only two back of a playoff spot all of a sudden! http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/5283246 I just heard about. Good I guess. We just need to win games in order to be taken more seriously. I don't really have a problem with our logo, I like our third jerseys so I hope those don't change. I don't think the Samuelis' will try pull the same stunt like Arte Moreno and change the city name. My words of inspiration have clearly gotten through to him. I agree with Bergeron being the MVP of the team right now, but I'll be goddamned if Sturm isn't climbing that ladder two rungs at a time. Fartsauce 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 So as we are pretty much 50 games in (some teams less, others more) What has been the story of the year so far? Is it Mario's retirement, Ovechkin's dominance, the suprising play of the Carolina Hurricanes, Jiri Fischer's heart stopping, the bad play of the Leafs, Jagr's return to glory, the new wide open nhl. A lot has happened this year.
KGB 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 Correct. 68-69-70 was the Habs. Nope, Boston won it in 1970 on the famous Bobby Orr leap-through-the-air goal.
