Guest JMA Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 Does anyone remember The Commandant, the first manager of the Truth Commission? Who was this guy and what did he do before being hired by the WWF? He always kind of reminded me of Col. DeBeers. Also, who exactly was Shinja (manager of Hakushi)? Does anyone else know of any more managers that were obscure and/or have a history you know nothing about?
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 The Commandant was an actor friend of Bret Hart, who he met while filming in South Africa. Bret liked his speaking voice and recommended him to Vince for the manager role of The Truth Commission. They put Don Callis in that role when they wanted the manager to take bumps and occasionally wrestle. Shinja was Akio Sato. He used to be in The Orient Express and wrestled in All Japan many years ago.

ChrisMWaters Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 I may be wrong about his obscurity factor... But what about Oliver Humperdink. So far, the only thing I've seen him in managing was was WrestleMania IV, when he managed Bam Bam Bigelow.
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 He managed in Florida for a while. He also was part of The Freebirds in WCW in 1991. He went on to do commentary with Gordon Solie on tapes of New Japan that were broadcast in Europe in the mid 90's. He was terrible.
Dobbs 3K Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 I just remember seeing him as Big Daddy Dink and thinking "WTF is this?"
Bruce Blank Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 Oliver Humperdink - the Big Kahuna WCW manager of the Samoan Swat Team (Later known as the Headshrinkers) and the Samoan Savage (I think they were Samoan ) this is like 88 - 90ish
Crimson G Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 I seem to remember Hakushi also coming out with a female consort at one time or another. (Possibly after Shinja was dropped.) Am I right? Also, I've never seen a picture of Shinja, anyone got one?
Epic Reine Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus Godwin who managed The Godwins in the late 90's. That's another obscure one.
Crimson G Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus Godwin who managed The Godwins in the late 90's. That's another obscure one. Who would win in a match: Uncle Cletus or Uncle Zebekiah?
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus Godwin who managed The Godwins in the late 90's. That's another obscure one. Who would win in a match: Uncle Cletus or Uncle Zebekiah? Zebekiah, as he was Dutch Mantell, a pretty established wrestler. I'm proud to a fault for knowing that. Conversely, if you had said Hillbilly Jim as the Godwinns manager, everything changes. I honestly dont remember Cletus, just Jim.
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus was Tony Anthony.
Crimson G Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus was Tony Anthony. Post-TL Hopper Tony Anthony.
Guest Duke_The_Dog Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Did Humperdink ever wrestle? He was Florida Hwy Champ. Rotondo beat him for it in 86-7ish.
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus was Tony Anthony. Post-TL Hopper Tony Anthony. I thought TL Hopper was Dory Funk?
Crimson G Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus was Tony Anthony. Post-TL Hopper Tony Anthony. I thought TL Hopper was Dory Funk? Nope. Remember when they used TL Hopper to rip off Caddyshack, though?
Epic Reine Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 What about Clarence Mason managing Owent Hart and Davey Boy a swell as the Nation Of Domination in late 90's WWF? I think he resurfaced later in WCW and managed Kanyon I believe.
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus was Tony Anthony. Post-TL Hopper Tony Anthony. I thought TL Hopper was Dory Funk? Nope. Remember when they used TL Hopper to rip off Caddyshack, though? Summerslam 96. It's also my favourite movie. Todd Pettengill: "OHHHH KING! WHAT DID YOU DO!?!?!
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Clarance mason managed Stevie Ray and Big T. And I'm probably wrong but i want to say his name was Mason Biggs or something like that.
Crimson G Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Clarance mason managed Stevie Ray and Big T. And I'm probably wrong but i want to say his name was Mason Biggs or something like that. J. Biggs. That was, I believe, the last time I ever watched WCW before it died. I mean, reusing old WWF managers that had no business being managers at all, come on! At least TRY to do something yourself!
Bruce Blank Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 T.L. Hopper = "Dirty White Boy" Tony Anthony (and Uncle Cletus)
nl5xsk1 Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Uncle Cletus Godwin who managed The Godwins in the late 90's. That's another obscure one. Who would win in a match: Uncle Cletus or Uncle Zebekiah? Actually, Dirty White Boy vs. Dirty Dutch Mantell would have been a halfway decent match, if both were in their primes. (Man, did I have the hots for the Dirty White Girl back in the day. I admit that I was a horned-up 13 year old, but still .........) And Sir Oliver Humperdink, in my mind, should be best known for managing Lord Humongous, when it was Sid Eudy portraying the character. The WCW & WWF versions sucked compared to the Florida & Mid-South versions.
Enigma Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Clarence Mason's name in WCW was Jay Biggs.
Guest jm29195 Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Mason did manage Kanyon- very briefly during December 99 when he was 'Champagne' Chris Kanyon- don't know if they remained together for more than one appearence though.....
Guest JMA Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Clarence Mason's name in WCW was Jay Biggs. Was that his real name? Also, how exactly did he get involved in the wrestling business?
Placebo Effect Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Clarence Mason's name in WCW was Jay Biggs. Was that his real name? Also, how exactly did he get involved in the wrestling business? I don't think anyone ever bothered to find out his real name. As for how he got involved, some say he was an actual member of the WWE's legal team. I tend to believe he was just an actor they hired for a one-off appearance and then decided to keep him around.
MillenniumMan831 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 I believe he said he is/was a real attorney in an interview. I forget how he got involved w/ the WWF though.
Just John Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 What about Curtis Hughes being Jericho's manager/bodyguard a couple months after he debuted in the WWF? Curtis had been in the WWF prior to that, correct?
nl5xsk1 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Yeah, Curtis was with HHH before Chyna, if my memory serves. And I don't mean that in a sexual way, I mean it as a ringside second.
