2006 NFL Off-Season

I'm hoping he secrectly told the organization that he is coming back but just wants to toy with the media over this. I mean, otherwise he is a complete jerk.

The Packers have 19 million in the cap, why don't we sign one of the last big named defensive players out there? I know guys like Arrington, Woodson, and Law are out there so sign one of them. Even if that fucking asshole Favre comes back, prepare for the third ice age Packer fans. I got to sit through one, so have fun with about six straight losing season's.

The problem is that everyone has cap money this year for a mediocre FA crop so cap room is really meaningless. Arrington is looking for way too much money for a guy who has never proven he can play in a defensive scheme (really should become a 3-4 rush LB), Woodson is toast, Ty Law can still play but if Favre doesn't come back then do you really want to bring in someone at Law's age.

If the Eagles and Packers really are talking about Walker and GB is looking for a DB, the Packers should try to build a deal around Rod Hood. He is going to be a better DB then they can get at any pick they get for Walker. Hood is on a one year tender deal and I doubt he will want to stick around in Philly as a nickle back next offseason.

One rule I like this year that the NFL did was that every team gets at least one Monday Night Football game. This finally means that I don't have to find a bar that has the NFL ticket to watch the Arizona Cardinals.

Honestly, the Packers should just say fuck this mind games and just say we don't want you back. Just rebuild with Aaron Rodgers, Farve is past his prime and made some pretty stupid desicions throwing the ball last year.

Yeah, I definitely think the Packers should go about business and assume that Farve is done. If he's taking this long to "decide", then it should be a clear indication that he is finished.

Houston doesn't have a Monday night game.

Nor do Tennessee, Buffalo, Cleveland, Kansas City, San Francisco or Detroit, if there is some "every team gets a Monday Night Game" rule the NFL did a pretty poor job with it. Not that any of those teams (aside from KC) belong anywhere near a primetime spot.

Favre: ‘No change’ on decision on whether to play in 2006

By Chris Havel

PackersNews.com

TUNICA, Miss. – Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said Saturday he still hasn’t made a decision whether to return to the team for one more season or retire.

Favre, 36, made his comments at the Cottonwoods Golf Course, which is hosting the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation charity golf tournament. Favre has deliberated the retirement question throughout this off-season.

“No change,” he said. “I don’t know. If I knew for sure, and I didn’t tell the Packers or the fans or the media, that wouldn’t be fair. When I do know, I told (the Packers) that I would tell them as soon as possible, maybe within the next week. It has been a strain on my family as well. People who are close to me are a little frustrated.”

Favre has hosted a news conference in conjunction with his golf tournament each of the past 10 years. His impending decision drew media from around the country. The news conference was televised live in Green Bay.

“My stance basically, and I’ve told this to Ted and Mike McCarthy, is that I love the game,” he said. “Coming back I stand to gain financially and for the records. But I want to think we can compete for the Super Bowl, and not just say that to say it because people want to hear it. I don’t want the coaches to say it and I don’t want to say it unless we really believe we can get to the Super Bowl or compete for it.”

Favre reiterated the Packers’ inability or reluctance to sign top-rate free agents has given him pause.

“From what I understand they signed a couple of guys. I don’t know if on paper we’re better or not. As I sit here before you, I’d like to say I think we are better, but I don’t know if we are,” he said. “I’m not the GM, I’m not the head coach, I don’t make those decisions and I never asked to. I know when we signed Reggie White we knew we were going to be better right away. I think people associated with the Packers said there’s a signing that will make us better. I think that’s what we have to do. We have to make a statement again. You have to stay up with the NFL. Teams are making statements. Sometimes you hit on them. Sometimes you don’t.”

Favre said he has to decide whether to return and run the risk of enduring another disappointing season.

“Going 4-12, I don’t think anyone covering the Packers, following the Packers or playing for the Packers found any joy in last season,” he said. “When I left it was tough to be excited about football. But it’s in my blood. I love to play the game.

“As time has passed, I have forgotten about the 4-12 season and I think more about the good times. If I decide to come back and play that’s really what I’m deciding to come back to, the fun. Maybe we don’t get back to the Super Bowl. I don’t know that. But I’d like to think we could compete for it.”

Favre admitted he hoped the Packers might make a big splash in free agency. Thus far, that hasn’t happened, and Favre acknowledged it isn’t likely to happen now that the free-agent signing period is winding down.

“It (free agency) may be over. I’m sort of thinking that right now,” he said. “I guess ultimately it comes down to just whether or not you want to play and run the risk of being 4-12. There’s always that risk, as there is the chance of us being 12-4. I would be probably more surprised if we were 12-4. I never thought we’d ever go 4-12 in my tenure here in Green Bay but we did, so nothing surprises me anymore. I know the free agency market is just about closed. The (April 29-30 NFL) draft, guys in the draft, I’ll be long gone before they make an impact.”

The Associated Press on Friday strongly suggested Favre would announce a decision at Saturday’s news conference. The AP report was based upon comments by a Favre family spokesperson. The report was false.

I think people take these comments, obviously, and turn them around,” he said. “(The decision) may be in a couple of days, or a couple of weeks, but they take it to mean a couple of minutes but that’s not the case.”

Favre’s charity raised $180,000 for underprivileged and disadvantaged children through a silent and live auction on Friday night. The foundation also is hosting a Tim McGraw concert tonight in which all the proceeds will benefit the foundation.

Asked what Favre would tell Packers fans, he said, “Well, I know they get anxious for the season to start every year. We hear it all the time: ‘I can’t wait for the season to start,’ and it’s February. There is life aside from whatever my decision and the off-season brings. The fans have always been great to me. I love the city of Green Bay. It’s been a wonderful place to play, but there are other things to do and focus on. I say, ‘Do that.’ That’s what I’m trying to do.”

The MJS reports this morning that Doug (Friend Of Favre) Pederson and Marco (FOF) Rivera say Favre is very concerned about the lack of new blood injected thus far into the interior GBP O-line. As are we all.

Even though half of those teams may not be in contention, I would see the reason for having every team get a MNF game, two actually... One would be that even though the teams may not be playing all that well, at least every fan of every team would get a chance to see their team in primetime even if they live somewhere else and don't know anyone that has Sunday Ticket. The other would be that, with parity, any of those teams could suddenly become division champs.

Indeed. I thought they would at least re-sign Ruegamer or Flanagan, but it looks like they're not going to attempt to re-sign Grey and Flanagan left via FA already. So, that would leave Scott Wells (who's done a pretty decent job in relief but haven't seen what he could do as a starter), and the two miserable failures they had play guard last year, Adrian Klemm and Will Whitticker. OG might possibly be the most important hole on the team, maybe even moreso than any position on defense.

Brett Favre is a future hall of famer and all, but the Packers need to cut their losses with him already. They're not going to win a championship next year and Brett Favre isn't going to play more than one season for them, so they should look to the future. The fact that he doesn't know whether or not he wants to play says enough. They really don't need him to come back and stink up the joint again this year because they can pay anybody to come in and do that for them. They need to worry about becoming competetive and having a winning foundation. A quarterback in the final days of his career isn't going to help them accomplish that.

While I agree with you, despite the number of interceptions Brett threw in 2005, he showed he can still play at a high level and he's certainly more of a sure thing than Aaron Rodgers would be. Maybe Rodgers wouldn't take as many chances, but I can guarantee he won't throw for as many yards or touchdowns as Favre could. Or maybe he'll be like the next Tom Brady and that will be that.

I just hate that Favre's doing this to tarnish his legacy. This really places him, a normally pretty classy guy, in a bad light.

God, this NFL Draft special is making my head hurt badly. Mel Kiper, Merill Hodge, and Sean Salisbury all on the screen at the same time. I hope that the Texans do not take Bush, just to see Kiper and company come drafy day go insane. They need help at other positions and it's just mind-boggling.

Why exactly are they having a draft special when the actual draft is still about 3 weeks away?

Because there are really and super hot races in the NBA yet, Barry hasn't hit a home run, MLB has just started and they have Monday Night Football now.

I don't know, I was expecting for them to talk about all 32 teams possible draft picks, but were stuck with USCPN with them blabbing about Bush and Leinart. I've only seen 10 total minutes of them talking about other other teams.

Sorry about the statement that all teams get a MNF game. I swear that was what I heard. Maybe it was that each team gets 1 primetime game this season.

I stopped watching that draft insider show after they spent 25 minutes talking about Bush and Leinart, and the next segment after the break was going to be an interview with Houston's GM where I'm sure they basically asked him to fellate Reggie Bush a little bit more.

NFL Network did a better job as they actually mentioned the other teams and didn't spend all day on the top guys. I'm more interested in steals and late picks than the top five guys who are really just barely better than some of the third round guys.

Hoge: "I wouldn't give Leinart or Young a first round grade"

There was my breaking point. At that point you knew Hoge was just there as a gimmick and if they used Kiper at all it was going to be Kiper-Hoge round 2.

As much as some people dislike Kiper at least he knows what is going on once you pass the biggest names that everyone knows. Everyone else essentially looks at the first ten picks, "Looked at some tape on them" (which they will mention more than the actual player), and then spout the consensus anyway (other than Hoge who spouts god knows what).

And you don't need to go to Mort like he is breaking something everytime he hears a rumbling, wow the Texans still have some interest in Vince Young, who knew?!?

The Dennis Dodd mock is ridiculous. I don't know if he believes it or if he is just throwing something different out there to stand out, but thinking Vernon Davis last til 24 is just wrong either way. If the Eagles took Kiwanuka with Davis still on the board, I would burn the Linc to the ground.

Did anybody hear of Gale Sayers and how he tore teams up in college that were tougher than Fresno St. and Notre Dame? Christ, looking at the schedule for Houston, Bush is gonna get killed. Philedalphia, Colts, Jaguars, and Bills. Each team has hit men on them like Dawkins, Doss/Sanders, Henderson/Stroud/Darius, and the LB's at Buffalo. I almost feel sorry for the kid and the hits he may take.

LOL, I'm reading some mock drafts on CBSSportsline, and Pete Prisco says Mario Williams is the next Julius Peppers. I'd have to agree with VX and say no, he's the next Jamal Reynolds.

Mario Williams is the best DE prospect since Peppers. Whether he'll be as good is something only time will tell.

Richard Seymour and the Pats agree on a long-term contract extension.

Daunte Culpepper might miss all of 06.
