Your Paragon of Virtue

What are your top five in each division?

To an extent, though when compared to what they've eached accomplished in the 3 years since, its value isn't enough to rank Babalu ahead of Shogun on the basis of the head-to-head win.

Lei and Curry does Babalu's win over Shogun mean anything to your rankings?

Usually 3 years is the buffer zone between whether or not wins or losses remain relevant to rankings, IMO.

By the aforementioned UFC standards, Wanderlei last competed as a HW, therefore eliminating him from the LHW rankings.

Any particular reason why Hendo is missing from your rankings, Lei?

He looked bad in both fights with Misaki, and his most impressive win since dropping to MW is a KO over a somewhat fatigued Gono.

Besides all that, he last fought at LHW.

Another question about the rankings: I'm surprised Rich Franklin isn't a lot lower in some people's rankings. Not that I myself think he needs to be, I just hear a lot of people writing him off right now.

Yeah but you've gotta look at who he dominated. Quarry wasn't even a top ten when he was thrown to the wolves and Loiseau sliced his way to victory over Tanner who up 'til that point was winning the fight handily. I'm not trying to take anything away from Rich, I think he's one of the more well-rounded guys out there but he struggled with Jorge Rivera before finally putting him away at UFC 50 and beat a washed-up Shamrock at the TUF I Finale which is not exactly akin to "MW Title Contender". But I'm looking forward to seeing him come back stronger and earning his rematch with Silva.

Like Lei said, Wanderlei last fought at HW, so he doesn't count.

Anyway, I'd probably tab him at 4, behind Chuck and Shogun who have looked unbeatable barring Coleman's roid rage, Arona who I still think has done more in two fights against Wanderlei than vice versa. He is fighting Lil Nog pretty soon I think, so if he wins that then he will re-emerge, but I think he's over the hill now. Too many fights, even if alot of them were against cans, has taken its toll on his body. He looks worn down, combination of steroids probably as well. Hell, I think Babalu could probably take him if he fought a smart fight, though I thought Babalu would show a lot more in his last fight too.

I am still amazed that a guy as one-dimensional as Aoki can dominate fighters in multiple divisions like he does.

I wouldn't exactly call him "one-dimensional." He's superb from pretty much any position on the mat, and also has solid enough Judo takedowns to be able to bring a guy like Kikuchi down. I'd say he's no more one dimensional than Diego is.

Diego is pretty one-dimensional.

He's a solid wrestler with great grappling and good G&P.

I'd say a one-dimensional fighter is someone like Royler or Hunt.

Well when I think of dimensions I mean stuff like ability to change where fight takes place (wrestling/judo) as well as ground skills and striking skills. I don't necessarily include GnP in there, though I guess you could.

I wouldn't say Diego is a great or solid wrestler, he couldn't take Alessio down once. I'd say he's a decent wrestler, who is an amazing grappler, and a poor striker.

Aoki may have better takedowns than I give him credit for, but from what I've seen he pulls guard an awful lot. I think Hansen will GnP him into oblivion, after being frustrated a few times.

Hansen's wrestling isn't anything special, so it's not entirely unlikely that Aoki will actually have the edge in takedowns (if he chooses to chase top position), and while Hansen is a great grappler, he hasn't actually looked that great against another good grappler in a while. I think that unless he reverts to blanketing Aoki, he'll actually be giving Aoki opprotunities to reverse or go for submissions of his own throughout the match.
