Rob Anybody 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 Probably better than the nutso eastern European fans, but I'll reserve judgement until he loses. If riots/bomb threats ensue, then it'll be a push. It was interesting at first, but now it's just pissing me off. She could save herself by going up and down the scale. Also, just read the paper and actually found out what Kiefer did. I think he's a dick; don't know about the rest of the country.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 That big herpes sore by Sharapova's lip is distracting me from the actual tennis. However, Justine has been absolutely amazing on the defensive end here.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 I got a bit nervous when Justine gagged on that 5-3 game, but thankfully she put an end to this one quickly and probably made Sharapova feel even worse about the loss, since she was serving to even the set. Barring a miracle Justine's about to win her 5th Slam in a couple of days.

naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 That ending sucked though I think Clijsters would have lost regardless. I feel bad that Mauresmo didn't get to win that won on her own, just for the confidence. However, not having to play an extra 15-30 minutes might just be the best thing for her. Clijsters seems snakebitten with injury, though she's fortunate that there's nothing really big on the schedule until March 6th so she's got about 5 1/2 weeks to heal. Rob Anybody 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 Bastard beat me to it. I think it's great that he made it through, if only because his crowd seems to be having fun. At least the rain didn't screw up his momentum or anything.

Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted January 26, 2006 Poor Fat Dave. That's gonna be a tough one to come back from. He really blew in the last 2 sets, especially the 5th. Credit to Marcos, though. I don't know how he keeps surviving like he does. Karma meet Kim. Kim, Karma. Muahahahahaha. That was awesome.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2006 Poor Kimmy. Clijsters out at least eight weeks with torn ligament CBS SportsLine.com wire reports BRUSSELS, Belgium -- New No. 1 Kim Clijsters will be sidelined at least two months after tearing a ligament in her right ankle in the Australian Open semifinals Thursday. "Bad news about my ankle after the scan - torn anterior ligament," Clijsters wrote on her Web site. The reigning U.S. Open champion said she already had pulled out of tournaments over the coming weeks, adding: "It's going to be a complex recovery." Clijsters left Melbourne Park in a wheelchair after being forced to quit because of the injury during her Australian Open semifinal against Amelie Mauresmo in the third set. "I twisted the ankle trying to position myself to hit a backhand," Clijsters wrote. "I immediately felt something wasn't right." The Belgian already had assured herself of overtaking Lindsay Davenport for the top spot in the WTA Tour rankings by beating Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals in Australia. And when she likely won't be able to play... she'll go on her site about how she's such a fighter, and why oh why am I always injured! She always pulls that crap, so it's hard to feel sorry for her. Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2006 So it's Bahgdatis vs. The Boss in the final. I think Federer takes this one down handily, even as well as Marcos has played. I'm predicting right now that this is the year Federer takes the grand slam.

I read somewhere that she pulled out of it already, but the tourney directors expect her to show up as a spectator because they ordered 10,000 bottles of champagne to celebrate her reclaiming the # 1 ranking. I see your point, but if she has any hopes of healing she won't risk it at some low level event especially when she's going to miss the Pacific Life/NASDAQ 100 double in March which really was responsible for her rise in the ranks last year. She'll probably be # 4 or 5 by then if not a little lower. I think Mauresmo will win the first set 6-4 or 7-6, and then lose the next two 2-6, 2-6 just to make her rep as a choker that much worse. Rob Anybody 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 I just turned on the TV for the women's final. If anyone's watching, can they tell me if Henin's been playing decent tennis and is just being outclassed, or is it that she's having the floor wiped with her? Rob Anybody 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 Alright, so that match was an anticlimax.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 You didn't miss anything. Mauresmo won the first set 6-1 with like 3 winners. I feel really bad for everyone involved. Henin-Hardenne doesn't seem like someone who would tank one on purpose just to avoid losing a blowout and Amelie didn't get to finish either Belgian off which isn't cool considering people will still doubt her title victory here. Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted January 28, 2006 Amelie played great tennis, though. When she's relaxed... not standing 5 feet behind the baseline hitting wimp shots for no reason... her game is gorgeous. And she played perfect against Justine today. Well deserved slam... although, her AO win is going to go down as one of the strangest wins ever. 4r - Misa Krajicek retires after 1 set. QF - Patty Schnyder lays an egg and tanks hard in the 2nd. SF - Clijsters retires in the 2nd set. F- Christine retires in the 2nd set. And I like Christine... but retiring of a probable tummy ache in a Grand Slam final... I don't know. That's weak. She'll probably still be #1, as she didn't come back until Antwerp last year... where she only lost in the QF... and then didn't play until IW and Miami, where she won both. This is the same Kim that hurried back for Hasselt... a measly Tier III after US Open... and predictably hurt her wrist even more. She's stupid with this stuff. naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 The best part about Mauresmo winning is that now she has as many major titles as the pretty princess Sharapova who is without a shadow of a doubt the most overrated player on tour. With Clijsters and her winning back to back, who inherits the throne of "best player on tour with a major"? By rank it would be Dementieva or Schnyder but I could never see either actually winning one. If Vaidisova hadn't tanked HARDCORE against Maursemo I would have said her, now I just don't know. As for Clijsters I'm assuming she misses the two tournies she won last March which will cost her about 650-700 points alone.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted January 28, 2006 No. Vaidisova sucks. She's a Maria clone, and I hate her. Best non-slam winner now... I hate to say Dementieva. Her stubborness annoys me. Patty may be the most talented, but with her head, nah. Ack, it probably is Demented now. Yuck. Could probably even put Bovina in the Top 5 list. Lol. To just have it happen in the deciding match of the tournament is bad enough, but three of the last four matches? Her win is going to be severely marred by controversy. Too bad. I always pulled for her to beat the Williamseses.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted January 28, 2006 I'm already the Keiper of tennis, but nobody here cares about tennis. The last retirement in a grand slam final... 90 Aussie Open, where Stefan Edberg retired with a stomach pull. Women's? I have no idea... I don't recall any. I know Court won one final without playing in the late 60's.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2006 I'm not Leena, and I don't know who it was but they said it was 1965, and that this was only the 4th time a woman's major final ended because of a retirement since 1900. Mauresmo was the best player here and it sucks because she would have beaten both Belgians and Krajicek no matter what happened to them physically or mentally. At least this time when she gets to # 1 they won't be able to talk shit about her not being able to win a slam.

Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2006 Well after starting slowly, Federer kicked it into high gear and then completely outclassed Bahgdatis. He also gave a really emotional victory speech that was uncharacteristic of him but also sort of refreshing to see a genuine outpouring of good emotion (lately in tennis it seems that emotional breakdowns are always either frustation, or the kind of crap we see in all the women's matches). Gert T 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2006 Good to see Federer win the Aussie Open so we can speculate for 4 months about the Slam. (I don't think it'll happen, but still good to speculate) The Mauresmo title is not tainted in my opinion as she was the better player in both matches when both her opponents retired (The Henin-Hardene one wasn't even close).
