Downhome 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Let's try this again, please delete the other thread. Just really quickly, here are the basic spoilers. I'll add details in just a few minutes, and I'm sure cawthon777 will chime in with some deep details: -Mark Henry defeated Rey Mysterio Before this match, Rey once again started all of that stuff about Eddie looking over him. This time, he said that Eddie was going to help him win the Rumble match, and that he dedicates his vicory in the match to him. He brought up that he was one of the last four guys in the match last year. Of course, he then went right to his match with Henry, and lost...clean in the middle of the ring from what I remember. -(Royal Rumble Qualifying Match) The Mexicools defeated The Dicks & Nunzio/Vito This was decent, with nothing of note really to mention. -(No Holds Barred Match) Chris Benoit defeated Randy Orton This one was pretty good, and was actually given quite a while I believe. A trash can lid, chair, and a trash can were involved. Randy Orton went down to the Crossface, perfectly clean. -Funaki defeated Finlay by DQ Finlay won, with what I believe is an Emerald Fusion. However, he continued to beat up Funaki, and the ref, the same one from last week, reversed the decision. -JBL and Scotty 2 Hotty went to a no contest The Boogeyman came down as the match was going on, and a bucket dumped a bunch of worms in the middle of the ring. The entire middle of the ring was covered, so much so that they had to totally change the ring canvas before going on with the show. JBL looked shocked, fell in the worms and rolled around, and then took off. -(Champion vs. Champions Handicap Match) Kurt Angle defeated MNM The match was decent, and Angle did win perfectly clean. Mark Henry came down with Daivari and they all got into it. Angle went for the ankle lock on Henry, but he escaped and Kurt fell out of the ring. I believe the show will end with Henry standing in the ring with MNM and Daivari, and Angle on the outside. Angle went for a HORRIBLE Angle Slam on Henry, it really looked bad because it looked like Henry just did not want to play along, but he sold it anyway. After the show ended, Kurt told Henry he could have a title match right that second. They went at it for a while with MNM at ringside, but after a few minutes it all fell apart, and Angle was getting a beat down. Rey Mysterio came down to help out Angle, and he ended up giving a 3-man 619 to Nitro, Mercury, and Daivari. It was then just Angle and Rey in the ring. Rey held the title and did Kurt's victory hop, and Kurt went to the top rope to do Rey's taunt. They did that a few times, hugged, then walked up the ramp. Rey was joking around and stole Kurt's title, Kurt chased him, and they left together, and that was that. Velocity stuff: -The Gymini defeated two people who I couldn't tell who they were. Your usual stuff, only a real jobber team in the place of Kendrick/London. -Bobby Lashley defeated someone The fans were really into Lashley. I hate his "hard hitting, soft spoken" gimmick though. His video has those exact words, and "soft spoken" is like in a cloud font or something, really weak. -Kid Kash/Jamie Noble defeated Kendrick/London They gave this match a good while also, but it was anything near what it should have been quality wise. -William Regal defeated David Flair, I think. I say I think, because it didn't look like him from the last time I saw him, and I just got there in time to see this match at all, it was the first one I think. I do know he was acting just like Flair, the fans were really behind him, and he had a big DF on the back of his tights, so I think it's fair to say I'm right on this one. About my free tickets: Ok, the free tickets that I got because of being a member of PWInsider, were in section 117, the lower level. I tried to get tickets last night, but they didn't have any more of the free ones. Up until they were sold out of the free ones, the free ones were in section 105, the limited view section. I could see that they were sorta behind the big stage, and you couldn't see the entrances and all of that. Anyway, I decided to try it again earlier today, and when I tried it it said that there were free tickets in the 117 secton. I was on row N, and they were really good seats. It was the lower level section right behind the floor seats, and you could see perfectly. They must have been having one hell of a time selling any tickets to this show, because I talked to a ton of people around me, and almost everyone had free tickets. I found it odd that they started out being in 105, limited view, then were not available, but then on the day of the show they were giving away tickets that were actually pretty damn good in the 117 section. naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 I'm guessing Boogey got involved in the JBL match otherwise they really think he sucks if he can't beat S2H quickly and cleanly. Angle chumping MNM doesn't work for me, but at least Mark Henry continues to win.

Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Doesn't sound like a great smackdown, but most Smackdowns before PPV's suck. No Lashley on the show means I can skip Smackdown for this week, but then again I wanna see Angle Vs. MNM.
Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted January 25, 2006 -(No Holds Barred Match) Chris Benoit defeated Randy Orton This one was pretty good, and was actually given quite a while I believe. A trash can lid, chair, and a trash can were involved. Randy Orton went down to the Crossface, perfectly clean. First off. Thanks for the report Downhome. It's good to hear that it was a pretty good match. But why oh why does the WWE have to resort to using trashcans all the time? It's one of my top peeves in wrestling since it's so fake looking. Do you know what Benoit's up to in the Rumble?
UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Orton and Mysterio both lose.. no Rumble winner is gonna lose on the last show before the event. Cancel them out.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Well, Lashley is on SD, but he's in the back talking about winning the Rumble...in his "soft spoken" style of course. They also had Animal of all people talking about how he was going to win the Rumble, then go to his home town and main event Wrestlemania~!!!!!!! It will happen! Ummm, also Melinia told Teddy Long that he has two strikes against him. One for not doing anything to Batista (yes, they mentioned that), and another for not doing anything for Angle for what he did to her last week. She said there better not be a strike three. Randy Orton told Booker T earlier in the night before his match that he didn't need Booker's help to beat Benoit later in the night. He said that he knew exactly what he was going to use his favor on, that Booker T owes him.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 A few more notes: -Kurt Angle was the only guy on the show who really got a "superstar" ovation. -The fans were behind Benoit for his match, but one of the loudest pops of the night, if not the loudest, was when he reveresed Orton's RKO into his Crossface, and then picked up the win. It was a huge pop, I was very pleased with that. There wasn't much heel heat at all all night. Simon Dean was just about the most over heel there. -The fans started a boring chant in the Finlay match. However, when the finish came they started taking notice, and then when he got on the mic and did his thing about how he is in WWE just to fight and how he will not change (and how he's, of course, tired of Americans), the fans really got into it with him. Give his character time, and he will be over huge.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Benoit and Angle winning specialty matches = good times for The Real Ghostbusters (WWE Fantasy team). I guess I'll need to re-read the SD! preview but I had thought Orton/Benoit was for the US title.
4hartthreat 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Any mention of other matches added to the rumble card, like maybe Benoit-Booker?
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Guess it was just a non-title match, which makes sense since Booker is cleared to go I guess. Typical Rumble cards are four matches of varying quality, and since four matches have already been announced, I think we're stuck with them. Cena/Edge might be a good title match and I think Angle might carry Henry to something watchable, but this undercard is straight out of a 90s Rumble. The flip side of that is this is the first time since 1992 (my first Rumble, when I didn't quite realize that Ric Flair was winning) I have no idea who is winning the Rumble, and I'm happy about that. I guess most of this comment is more suited for the Rumble thread though.

cawthon777 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Downhome covered the brunt of it but I threw in a few things here and there... A near sell-out crowd, much like Charlotte the night before. Only scattered open seats from what I saw. Dark Match: William Regal pinned David Flair with a running knee to the head Velocity: The Gymini (w/ Simon Dean) defeated Jason Jones & ? Moore when Moore was pinned; after the bout, the Gymini hit the Cross Trainer on Jones Bobby Lashley pinned Brad Attitude with the Dominator WWE Cruiserweight Champion Kid Kash & Jamie Noble defeated Paul London & Brian Kendrick when Kendrick submitted to Noble’s dragon sleeper - Good match with some nice high spots to the floor. Kash was very over as a heel. Smackdown: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Mark Henry (w/ Daivari) - Rey started the show off with an in-ring promo in which he said he knew he was the underdog in this rematch and in the upcoming Royal Rumble. And while he admitted to being small in nature, he said he has a big heart. He dedicated his performance and win in the Royal Rumble to Eddie Guerrero. Rey wore Eddie’s shirt to the ring and there were a lot of Eddie chants during the promo. As far as the match, it was very fast paced with Rey dominating, using a hit-and-run offense which kept Henry off guard. Henry eventually caught Rey and hit the powerslam for the win. Daivari did guest commentary for the match. After the bout, two referees helped Rey from the ring. Randy Orton, Booker T, and Sharmell were shown backstage in which Booker offered to pay Randy back his favor by interfering in his upcoming match with Chris Benoit. Orton declined the offer, saying he could beat Benoit on his own, but said he might cash in the favor at the Royal Rumble, especially if Booker and Orton are the last two in the ring. Orton walked off and Booker and Sharmell did not look pleased with that idea. Footage from last weekend’s Smackdown tour of Mexico was shown, specifically of Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio Jr., and El Hijo del Santo in the ring paying tribute to Eddie Guerrero. Super Crazy & Psychosis vs. James & Chad Dick vs. Nunzio & Vito (Royal Rumble Qualifying Match) - Crazy pinned Nunzio after a wheelbarrow-facebuster double team. The Rob Van Dam Royal Rumble vignette was shown. A Royal Rumble Flashback recapped Chris Benoit’s victory in 2004, a perfect lead-in to … Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton (No Holds Barred, Falls Count Anywhere) - Great match, as is usual when these two are in the ring together. Started scientifically at first but eventually went to the floor with Orton using a trash can lid and dropping Benoit across the commentary table. The finish was fantastic. Benoit went for the diving headbutt but Orton blocked by raising the trash can lid. Orton got to his feet first and set Benoit up for the RKO but Benoit shoved him off into the ropes, quickly picked up the trash can lid, smashed it over Orton’s head as he ran back off the ropes, and applied the Crossface. After several seconds of frantically stretching for the ropes, Orton tapped. Big pop for Benoit’s win. Several Royal Rumble promos were shown throughout the taping, including Road Warrior Animal, Matt Hardy, and Bobby Lashley. Finlay vs. Sho Funaki - Finlay won the match with a Musclebuster but the referee reversed the decision when Finley assaulted his opponent after the bout. Finlay then grabbed the mic, said he came to fight and cut a promo on the fans before hitting a second Musclebuster and leaving ringside. JBL and Jillian Hall were shown backstage (mere moments after I saw them enter the limo; I sat behind the stage) with both talking about the Boogeyman. JBL assured Jillian she had nothing to worry about. A trailer for Kane’s “See No Evil” was shown. Nothing too out of the ordinary as far as horror movies go. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Jillian Hall) fought Scotty 2 Hotty to a no contest when the Boogeyman’s music hit and JBL had a bucket full of worms dropped on him. We’re talking “Carrie” … but with worms. They filled the ring. As JBL was becoming freaked out by that, the Boogeyman came out from under the ring and scared JBL to the point where he fell backwards onto the worms, freaking him out even more. He and Jillian eventually ran backstage as the Boogeyman had dinner. A music video was shown to promote WWE 24/7 to the tune of Van Halen’s “Right Now”. Very well done piece capturing key moments in WWE, WCW, NWA, and ECW history. Celebrities like Mike Tyson, Arnold, and Muhammad Ali were featured as well. Mark Henry & Daivari were interviewed backstage about Henry’s title match with Kurt Angle at the Royal Rumble. Melina confronted Teddy Long backstage, showing him her taped up ankle, the result of Kurt Angle’s assault the previous week. World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle vs. WWE Smackdown! Tag Team Champions Johnny Nitro & Joey Mercury (w/ Melina) (Handicap match) - Angle forced Mercury to tap to the ankle lock after belly-to-belly suplexing Nitro over the top to the floor. After the bout, Mark Henry & Daivari came out, with Angle taking the fight to Henry and landing the Angle Slam. The champ applied the ankle lock but, to his shock, Henry powered out of it and kicked Angle to the floor. Henry, Daivari, and MNM stood in the ring and taunted Angle, with Henry signaling that the belt would soon be his, to close the TV broadcast. After several moments, Angle grabbed the mic and said if Henry thought he was so tough, how would he like a title shot right then and there? Henry accepted and we have our dark match main event. World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle vs. Mark Henry (w/ Daivari & MNM) - Not bad but very short. Angle reapplies the ankle lock and all the heels come in for the DQ. Moments later, Rey Mysterio Jr. runs out to make the save, eventually hitting a 619 on Daivari, Nitro, & Mercury at the same time. Moments later, Angle set Henry up so Rey could hit the same move on him. Angle and Rey then chanted “You Suck” in unison with the fans toward Henry, Daivari, and MNM. After the heels left, Angle and Rey posed, with Rey grabbing the belt and doing the Angle spinning pose bit. Angle and Rey then hugged and left the ring together. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Rey winning it and dedicating to Eddie is a nice idea, but we've seen Rey vs. Angle a bunch of times. I am really opposed to anyone on SD winning the Rumble since they can easily just have that #1 contender determined at No Way Out. Someone from Raw needs to win the Rumble since they have no PPV to get that straight.

Downhome 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 One more quick note about the show: It took them forever to finally open the doors, and when they actually did start letting people in, it then took even longer to get everyone in the building. For the first time in my life, they actually searched each and every person going into the arena. You had to empty your pockets, open your jacket, and all of that. The women had to open their purses, and allow the guys to go through them. Then, after all of that bullshit, you had to be searched from head to toe with one of those handheld metal detectors. They were turning people away left and right, mainly because of, OMGWTF, people bringing in candy. They were turning people away for something as simple as bringing in a single candy bar. That seemed to be the main reason for all of of the searching. I've been to a ton of wrestling shows, but this is the first time I've ever seen anything like that. humanoid92 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 Orton and Mysterio both lose.. no Rumble winner is gonna lose on the last show before the event. Cancel them out. I'm not sure I understand that logic. Lots of times wrestlers job on TV before going over in big matches at the PPV. Jericho jobbed to Austin on the Raw before he became the Undisputed Champion. If anything it makes more sense. Henry beating Rey, but Rey winning the Rumble makes them both look strong because now Henry has a legitimate reason to think he can be the #1 contender. But if Rey had won on Smackdown and wins the Rumble, he's the only one that benefits. Sure, it's even-steven booking, but that's they way they've operated for years now. In the Jericho example from above, Austin saved face because he had already beat him and logically led to a rematch. Plus, it made Jericho's more of a surprise. If Rey is going to win the Rumble (and I'm not saying he is) he's going to do it as an underdog, not as a favorite. So why should they build him up with a bunch of wins first? He's not a big guy, he's not unstoppable. Now that they've established him that way, that would make a Rumble win that much more special. That said, I still find it hard to believe they'll have him win it. Of course, I also found it hard to believe they'd be dumb enough to have a lame battle royale to declare a new champion when they easily could have put the vacant title on the line in the Rumble match, so who knows what they're doing. Really? I noticed the purse searching but no one bothered me with the metal detector treatment. I agree that it took forever to get in. I didn't show up until about 6:25, and the doors were supposed to open at 6:30. I don't think they did until nearly an hour later.

I'm not sure I understand that logic. Lots of times wrestlers job on TV before going over in big matches at the PPV. Agreed. If anything, it sets up the victor as the logical #1 contender. I'm betting the farm on Orton this Sunday - not that I WANT him to win, I just think that's the direction they're going. So for him to beat Benoit ... well, it would only hurt Benoit and it wouldn't help Orton THAT much. So it makes more since to have Benoit go over clean and then set up a PPV match between the two later down the line - perhaps at No Way Out - where Benoit can be seen as a viable threat.
