MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2006 Got the Piper dvd in the mail yesterday. Didn't get through the whole documentary yet. Pretty good so far, but basic. It came w/ a 4th dvd of Piper's Pits . . . only a 12-minute disc though.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2006 Any match listings yet for the AWA DVD? If it's set to be released in December, you would think that we would know more about this DVD by now. http://www.silvervision.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=WWE1155 What no Dick the Bruiser or Crusher tag matches from the 70's and nothing from Stan Hanson, Scott Hall, Rick Martel, Sgt. Slaughter?
Guest bushwickray Report post Posted November 10, 2006 The Porn shops in NYC have gotten in the Piper and AWA dvds this week. The Piper dvd is pretty good but the AWA DVD is probably one of the best dvd's documentary-wise they've ever done. I'd rank it right up there with the ECW one, hell it may even surpass that. The documentary is fairly intresting but it's mainly a verbal blowjob to Verne Gagne UNTIL they get to Super Sunday then the thing becomes a awesome documentary piece tracing hogan and mean Gene's steps leaving the AWA and Verne and Vince having 2 completly diffrent stories on how Hogan left. Then they finally start ripping into Verne and revealnig how he screwed Lawler out of mnoey. It does a great job of capturing the desperation the old-time promoters felt in the mid 80's. Just an awesome documentary and just based on that probably the best DVD of the year. The thing does a great job of really capturing all of Verne Gagne's stregths and flaws The piper dvd is great if you love Piper. But the documentary is pretty much fluff. The most intresting you learn is that Piper was suppsed to wrestle OJ Simpson at Wrestlemania 12. If your gonna buy both, get both, but if you only have money for one dvd you MUST buy the AWA one. If you watched wrestling in the 80's it is a must-own. Hell if you ever had a passing intrest in wrestling it's a must-own. I was sad they didn't interview Sergent Slaughter or HBK for the dvd. But Sherri looks GREAT in her interviews sexier as herself then her charcter. Baron Von Rasche and Nick Bockwinkle look good too. I can't praise the documentary on this dvd enough. Guest bushwickray Report post Posted November 10, 2006 Oh one more thing: Disc 1 has like 90 minutes of extras the websites don't tell you about, like interview outakes and old AWA promos and vignettes. There are about 90 minutes of these
Guest bushwickray Report post Posted November 11, 2006 Does the AWA one have the Iron Sheik rambling about Verne offering him $10K to break Hogan's leg? No but it's strongly implied that Verne wanted revenge and wasn't happy with the defections.
Scroby 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2006 So I've only seen little from the AWA, as someone who really hasn't seen much of AWA at all, (trying to figure out how to word this correctly), would the AWA dvd get me interested in seeing AWA stuff ? (I wish I could have figured out a better way to word that question)
Guest bushwickray Report post Posted November 12, 2006 Would the AWA DVD get you intrested in the AWA? The AWA DVD really gets you intrested in seeing Nick Bockwinkle and Heenans' awa stuff. As they are put over huge, almost nothing negative is said about them. I think the DVD would. I watched the best of AWA PPV shows Gagne put together in 2001 on DirectTV and nothing had me as rivited as this dvd set. I mean at one point they pretty much say that AWA was a close second to the WWWF in the 70's burying the NWA in the process. 70's AWA is put over pretty strongly in this DVD. razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2006 The AWA extra's section has too much Baron Von Rashke for my liking if I wanted to see a second rate Von Erich ripoff I would look for some Colorado Kid Mike Repada matches.

Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 I bought it at Circuit City, with the 4th disc, for 24.99. I'm guessing there's a big sticker on the cover saying includes bonus disc? Which I'm assuming are Piper Pit's segments?

Which I'm assuming are Piper Pit's segments? You are correct, sir. A black sticker, like Hogan's 4 disc set at Wal-Mart, that says "Includes Special 4th Disc With More Piper's Pits". I haven't watched it yet, but the booklet just says "More Piper's Pits!!" as a listing for the 4th disc. Who knows which ones.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2006 Just watched the Pillman disc, I have a question. Was the part with Pillman & Zenk; was it a quasi-bury job on Zenk because they made it seem like he wanted the team to split, where realistically in 1990 neither had stroke to let the team split on their own.
reign 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2006 Zenk maintained that the bookers(Ole Anderson) broke them up a la the Hollywood Blondes....think what WCW was then..no top rope stuff and veterns who hated younger guys so it doesn't seem all that unlikely....
Gert T 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2006 The split makes sense though, Pillman needed to go over rising talent like Buddy Landell and Rip Rogers while Zenk had to put over new talent like Vader and Brian Lee.
Jericholic82 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2006 I got the piper one at work the other night along with the sd vs raw 07 for ps2. it wasnt on sale oddly, so it was 24.99, but I got it for 21 with my discount. only glimpsed at the discs so fare as I have been too busy. the bonus disc is about 11 and a half minutes long and it has about 4 or 5 pits on it, from memory ones with jesse ventura, kamala, mr fuji (i think). I didnt watch it all just skippe dthru the chapters to see which ones were on there. question, why have they changed pipers theme now? (well they first used it at wm 21) on the extras on the disc, they dont edit his old one (the one he used from 89 onward in wwf/e) I liked the old one better then this one and it would have been much cooler sounding on the menu screens oh well no big whoop I guess
Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2006 I was wondering the same thing about the theme myself.
spman 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2006 I just finished watching the feature portion of the AWA DVD, and it's definitely one of the best ones they've put together yet. Plenty of insight from all the major players in the company, including the Gagne's, Baron Von Raschke, Nick Bockwinkel, Larry Hennig, and others. The Gagne's themselves come off as somewhat sympathetic characters who just wanted to continue to promote gold 'ol fashioned professional wrestling, but just couldn't compete with the circus that was the WWF. It's often debated whether it was Vince Mcmahon's aggressive promoting, or Verne Gagne's refusal to progress with the times that led to the downfall of the promotion. The feature itself seems to imply that it was a combination of both. It focuses on Vince taking his company national, and signing all of the best wrestlers, as well as Verne's boneheaded booking decisions and incessant nepotism. Vince Mcmahon himself comes off in this feature as somewhat mean spirited I think, but at the end of the day, Verne just couldn't compete, and it's his own fault that he let it all slip away. The Gagne's though are also as thick as they ever have been too. They refuse to admit that they ever made any mistakes, and that it was the evil tyrant Vince McMahon that just trampled them for no good reason. They stop short of being bitter, and in the end you kind of feel bad for them in a way. Despite this though, many others like Baron, Bischoff, and Hogan have no problem ripping into Verne and pointing out all of his flaws and some of his sleazier traits as promoter. If I had to say there were any problems with the feature, the only thing that sticks out to me is that there are times when other wrestlers or people involved in the business are speaking whom I don't recognize, and the editors don't do a very good job of pointing out exactly who's who. Definitely don't pass this up. It's very much accessible for all fans, and is nothing at all like those 10 page history lessons Meltzer does every so often in the Observer that bore a lot of fans to tears. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2006 I'm curious to see the AWA DVD now. I actually know a local wrestler who was an undercard guy in AWA and WWF, and he was just telling me some interesting things about the Gagnes. Basically said Greg was worse and more bitter than Verne. I'm curious about Crusher, too. Whenever I bring up wrestling with any of my older relatives, everyone loves talking about the guy. He was really well liked here in Wisconsin.

Yeah, well it's one of those things where I was back and fourth between the TV and the computer while I was watching it, but I know for a fact Jim Brunzell was on there at least 6 times before they identified him. razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2006 The cover should of had all of the 40-50 year old main eventers from the mid-80's on the cover. People like Verne Gagne, Baron Von Rashke, Ray " the Crippler" Stevens, The Crusher & the Bruiser, Nick Bockwinkle, Greg Gagne, Larry Zybrisko, Jerry Lawler should of been on the cover.
