Chazz 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 I was just wondering If anybody here was ever "fortunate" enough to attend a taping of either show? I was curious how an actual fan(s) managed to keep their sanity among the bevy of Barry Horowitz vs The Gambler type matches as well as having to sit with a bunch of tourists. I figured there may be more the one funny story out there.
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Report post Posted February 9, 2006 I went to a WCW Sat Night show in Dec 97ish here in Green bay when that was a jobber show as well Saw Super Calo fight 4 times (The crowd groaned the 4th time his music played) Jericho was there, Chono was there, Public Enemy faced Harlem Heat twice, and the dark match main event was La Parka vs Lex Luger Steve McMicheals and Arn fought someone too I think. McMicheals cut a promo saying he quit the Packers cause he couldn't be paid enough to play for these losers (Who had won the super bowl days earlier) I'd wager 15 matches at least. I'd love for someone to give me a whole card for that show I never found it on DDT Digest. Green Bay Dec 97 - Jan 98ish
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Report post Posted February 9, 2006 WCW Saturday Night - Saturday, 01/25/97 - Green bay "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan pinned Disco Inferno after a sock in the mush with a taped fist. For those of you keeping score, Disco Inferno's "Can't figure out my new leglock" angle is now ahead of Steve Regal's "Keeping my title through a time limit draw" by a score of 5 to 4. Ultimate Dragon made J.L. submit with a reverse figure-four into a bridge. High Voltage def. Ace Darling and Kevin Storm when Kaos pinned Ace Darling after the Voltmeter. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho pinned Super Calo after a missile dropkick. "Squire" Dave Taylor pinned "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton by using the ropes on a cradle. The Faces of Fear and "Laughing Man" Hugh Morrus def. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson and Steve "Mongo" McMichael via DQ when Jeff Jarrett interfered on Anderson's and McMichael's behalf. This was an impromptu handicap match because Benoit didn't show. The fact Benoit didn't show was a work. As they were in Green Bay, the humanoids got a good "Bears suck!" chant going for McMichael. The match had a lot of bad spots. At one point, Anderson needed to make a tag. He was left by himself in the middle of the ring for about fifteen seconds. Theoretically someone should have been preventing him from making the tag but no one was. Thus, he looked silly as he was seemingly struggling against some unseen force preventing him from making the tag. After Jarrett made the save, Anderson and McMichael left Jarett there to take a beating until the refs saved him. The cops had to hold Jarrett back from attacking Anderson and McMichael during their post-match interview. "Diamond" Dallas Page pinned Mark Starr following a Diamond Cutter. Scotty Riggs pinned The Gambler with a Perfectplex (which Riggs has renamed as the Ameriplex). "Lord" Steven Regal made Chavo Guerrero, Jr. submit with a Regal Stretch to retain the WCW World Television Championship. Public Enemy def. Harlem Heat via DQ when Sister Sherri interfered on Harlem Heat's behalf. Sister Sherri and Johnny Grunge did a table spot together. Lots of matches still missing
haws bah gawd 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 Went to a Saturday Night taping in Augusta, Georgia in September of '96. It was an extremely long show that felt like it had at least 25 - 30 matches taped, so you got your money's worth. One neat thing was Raven was doing his "sitting in the crowd and not caring" gimmick, so he was sitting directly in front of me. Sone of the wrestlers I remember seeing are DDP, Glacier (hate the guy all you want, his entrance was cool live), Chris Jericho, Raven, Stevie Richards, Steiners, Scott Norton, Wrath, Mortis, Alex Wright, and Yuji Nagata. Not a bad show at all.
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 I was thisclose to attending a Sat Night taping when it was in Erie, PA but lack of money made my decision not to go for me. I did however attend arguably the worst episode ever of Thunder in Cleveland (May of 1998). Only bright spot was seeing Jericho. Just an awful experience. JHawk can attest to that. Oh please, no WAY the one that you wend to is the Worst Thunder Ever. Unless you went to the one where David Arquette won the World Title, then you can't have that claim. Fortunately for me, I never went to a late WCW event. ...unfortunately for me, I never went to ANY WCW event. Stupid non-liking wrestling Parents.
Matt Young 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 I went to a WCW Saturday Night taping in May 1998 in Springfield, Illinois. It was mostly jobber matches, with the main event being a US Title match featuring Goldberg defending against Yuji Nagata.
RedJed 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 Went to a few WCW craptastic tapings. One was in October 96 in Rochester, MN right after they did a Nitro in Mankato the night before (this was the show with Sting showing up for the first time with the black and white facepaint, and the place they did the first "NWO Saturday Night" empty arena matches that were short lived segments on WCWSN) and it was pretty boring overall. Can't even remember the matches since they were all basically squashes. I did go to another WCW SN taping in Mankato in early 98 or late 97, I believe. Again I cant even remember the matches as all I recall was that is was boring as fuck. If anyone can find out the results from these, I'd love to see em after all these years. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2006 I went to a WCW Saturday Night taping on May 19th, 1998 ( I remember the date because it was the day before my birthday and the tickets were an early birthday present) in Portland, Maine. It was two days after Slamboree so the NWO Wolfpac Vs NWO Hollywood angle was super hot and the Goldberg chants were LOUD. Goldberg was advertised but didn't show. All through the night, David Penzer hyped a match between an NWO Wolfpac member and a NWO Hollywood member. Well in the main event, they delivered....Konnan Vs The Giant (With Scott Hall in his corner for some reason, which was odd since Hall wasn't on the card except the main event. Maybe he was "chemically altered") Despite the craptastic sounding main event (Which wasn't that bad due to the hot crowd that thought Konnan could actually beat The Giant), the card wasn't bad, in fact it was one of the better cards I've been to. Sure, a good portion of the matches were squashes. But you got something like 20 matches for a $20 ticket, you can't get any better than that. And there were several really rippin' matches, Match 3 of the Best of 7 Series between Chris Benoit and Booker T was on the taping, as was a really good match between Chavo Guerrero Jr (With Chris Jericho in his corner) Vs Dean Malenko and as always, a terrific six man lucha spotfest featuring Juventeud Guerrera. Overall I thought it was quite a great card. Sadly, that was the only time I ever saw WCW because that was their first and only appearence in Portland. At least the Thunder where Arquette won the title came off OK on TV until the main event. I have the May 21, 1998 Thunder from Cleveland on tape somewhere, only saw it once to see how it came off on TV, and it was just as bad on tape as it was in person. A shame too, considering the house show I went to in Youngstown the night before was decent despite not having any big names.
Vampiro69 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2006 I attended a WCW Saturday Night taping in Bismarck, ND in either April or May of 1999. The show had some crap on it however we got a couple of good matches. Benoit & Malenko vs Disorderly Conduct- Solid fun match Malenko vs Raven Pyschosis v Blitzkrieg We also had a huge Charles Robinson is gay chant going, which was funny hearing on a Saturday afternoon on TBS when we watched the show. JJMc 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2006 You know, these old TV tapings get a bad rap, but I thought they were cool in a way. I went to a WWF Action Zone/Wrestling Challenge taping in '95 and I'll be damned if there weren't 30 matches. There were half a dozen feature matches, too. The main event was a six man with Bret and two partners that escape me against Jarrett, Hakushi, and another partner that escapes me. Hakushi also wrestled in a about 3 other jobber matches. One funny thing I remember is that Bob Holly wrestled somebody and they must have blew the finish or something, because the match after next, they came out and did the same match again. And lastly, some girl jumped the guardrail and onto the Undertaker as he made his way to the ring. I miss that format of TV. I think eventually, they'll have to go back to it. Danville_Wrestling 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 I loved the Action Zone as a young fan on Sunday morning when it aired in my area. I'll never forget the moment when Barry Horowitz beat Skip and J.R.'s call "Horowitz wins! Horowitz wins!"
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 Yeah, that match came out of nowhere. I remember a few weeks prior they had a match on Raw which Horowitz almost won so I figured when/if they'd have Barry win one, it'd be on the flagship show . . not the cable version of Challenge. ChrisMWaters 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 I still wish someone would actually post that match so I could watch it again. I haven't seen that since it first aired...
