EdwardKnoxII Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I've been wanting to pick up a wrestling game for my gamecube for some time since I haven't got one since the No Mercy days. So what are some good wrestling games for the gamecube and what are some that I should just avoid?
AndrewTS Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Def Jam Vendetta (it's Aki, it's actually a wrestling game unlike the sequel, and you can still enjoy it even if you hate rap) Ultimate Muscle: Legends vs. New Generation (another Aki game. the engine is very over the top, although the actual number of moves is limited. It's fast and silly and absurdly fun in multiplayer) Some may disagree with me, but the WWE games for GC range from mediocre to crap and I've played them all but DoR2. There could be some imports I'm not familiar with, though.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I am sure a few people here will recommend WWE: Day of Reckoning 2. I haven't played it but I heard it is good. I have WWE Wrestlemania XIX and I like it. The controls are similar to No Mercy. There is no season mode. There is a story mode where you play a disgruntled WWE wrestler of your choice and you try to sabotage WM XIX. Mostly it's handicapped fights against WWE roadies who have a bigger move set than Chris Masters. Occasionally, you'll fight a WWE superstar. This mode is goal oriented. You have eliminate, protect, or escape something. It can get frustrating after awhile. Regular matches are fun. I like the tables in these games. I can do more moves through them than I could with the SD series.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I haven't played the second one, but Day Of Reckoning isn't bad at all, quite nice, in fact. Legends of Wrestling 2 can also be found for cheap, and it's good if you don't mind that you have a health meter. The LoW games are also the only games on the current generation of systems that allows for a true Survivor Series match
AndrewTS Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 WMXIX's pitiful Revenge mode kills the game. The gameplay engine is okay, though. However, unless you have plenty of friends over a lot, there's little to enjoy in it. The story modes of the SD games or even the above-mentioned titles give them a huge advantage. Plus, DoR2's story mode I heard is terrible. You can only use a CAW and it's the same story each time--no branching paths or alternate routes. No Mercy > every domestic wrestling title on GC, X-Box, PS2 in my book, still.

Invictus Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 You can't go wrong with Day of Reckoning 2. I own it and many of the Smackdown! series of games on PS2 (HCTP and SvsR2006) and I prefer to play DOR 2 any day of the week. The gameplay is as close as you're going to get to No Mercy, which is very, very good. The story mode is good while it lasts, but very linear. It's really the only WWE wrestling game you need for the Gamecube.
Skywarp! Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Whatever you do, stay away from Wrestlemania X-8. However cheap you find it, it's still not worth it.

Oh God, I still can't believe I bought that when it was new...that seriously is the worst wrestling game in a couple of generations
the max Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 There's a special place in hell for the people who created Thunder, Nitro and Backstage Assault.
Black Lushus Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 There's a special place in hell for the people who created Thunder, Nitro and Backstage Assault. what about Warzone and Attitude?
Matt Young Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 There's a special place in hell for the people who created Thunder, Nitro and Backstage Assault. what about Warzone and Attitude? Those games werealot of fun in their time. They just haven't held up well. You can throw in the 2 ECW games with those as well.
Black Lushus Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 I dunno man...I was very disappointed with both games...very disappointed. Nothing let me down worse than Nitro, though.
AndrewTS Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Warzone and Attitude were okay for their time period. They had fighting-game style motions and a passable grappling system. They introduced one of the first noteworth wrestling creation modes Stateside. The rosters were rather large, too. Nitro and Thunder were both horrible, though.
Guest NYChris Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Warzone??? Warzone had like 15 wresters if.
A Happy Medium Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 As far as I remember...Warzone also didn't have a custom moveset.
AndrewTS Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Okay, yeah--but in Attitude you had about 40 I believe, while Hardcore Revolution had about 50 I think. Warzone I tend to forget much information about. And i never said it let you do custom movesets--that wasn't introduced until Attitude. Warzone had presets movesets, which were the regular in-game movesets plus 2-3 ones based on non-WWF wrestlers. The sequel to Hardcore Revolution, Anarchy Rulz, had a completely idiotic game engine makeover. To use higher damage moves, you had to first perform lower damage moves and you would be able to temporarily follow up with bigger moves. Sounds fine in theory, but that means usually you'd have your punch/kick/grapple, about 2 or 3 ready moves, and 3 of the most boring grapple moves ever. Plus the fact that somebody designed an ECW game that would play that way, rather than giving you free reign to most/all the big moves at all times is pretty crazy/funny/ironic/stupid. I spent a ridiculous amount of time with WCW vs. the World. I thought the graphics were total crap (even for PS1 at the time), but damn if it didn't play well. I had the internet about that time but didn't do much research on games there. I was wondering if there was any logical reason "The Giant" had a huge afro, and I could swear he must have been Andre or something. Sure enough, that's what happened. It's funny that they swapped out Vader and Dynamite Kid's movesets.
Sideburnious Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 I still hold a special place in my heart for attitude.
PLAGIARISM! Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Yeah. At the time, the thought of them including Al Snow in a game was enough to send me into fits, esp as warzone had like 8 guys in it.
Hawkius Maximus Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 I picked up DOR2 for 29.95. It's pretty good from what I've played. It's like WM XIX for the GC on steroids with better overall everything. What I don't get at all, is why it doesn't support six people in the ring at once. The GC is the second most powerful system behind the Xbox, correct? So why the fuck can the PS2 have six people in the goddamn ring, but not the GC? Makes no sense to me. Only negatives I've had thus far, is storyline is kinda weak. It's hard to change focus with the C Stick, and I've experienced slowdown in four man HITC's. Beyond that, good game.
AndrewTS Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 The GC is the second most powerful system behind the Xbox, correct? Yes and no. The Gamecube is built smarter, so it manages to usually make better use of its power than PS2. However, it has difficulties handling huge worlds, more characters on screen because its internal RAM cache is smaller than the other two's. Plus, the storage capacity of GC discs also hurts it a bit. Some things it does very well, other things it isn't so hot at.
