We've danced around this a few times, but is there really an advantage/disadvantage to picking HD-DVD or Blu-Ray at this point? Is it going to come down to which studios pick which disc? That's essentially what I'd been telling customers, other than the more capacity to a Blu-Ray disc thing....

How much does blank BR media cost compared to HD-DVD? BR has more space, so if they're about the same, HD-DVD can fuck off. A 10 gig difference in storage space is huge for someone who wants to use the discs for purposes other than HD-video. Blu Ray also has a higher theoretical maximum transfer rate. It sounds like BR is the better technology, but it'll come down to price.

 

Edit - Heh, BD-r media costs between $15 and $20 and I can't find HD-DVD-R prices. Unless HD-DVD-R is $10 or less, I know which format I'm going with.

The problem with that is dual layered media has always been priced extremely high, relative to regular single layer media. DVD-R DL for example, is about 10x the cost of DVD-R ($0.20 vs. $2.00 or so). I'd hate to think about how much triple layered HD-DVDs will run.

Single layer BDs are 25 gigabytes. Dual layer is 50. The point is that with how much more dual layered media costs, it stands to be reason that triple layered will cost an obscene amount. So triple layered HD-DVDs being 1 gigabyte larger than dual layered BDs doesn't really mean much. Theoretically, they could develop triple layer BDs that hold 75 gigs, but with how much it would likely cost, there's not much point.

It certainly should be, but I worked at a video store from 98-2003. A customer came in, in December '02, and asked for a great loud movie for her new home theatre. I suggested XXX, but said it as Triple X(the Vin Diesel new release at the time). She promptly left.

Really? I thought it was just a periphal, that used the USB on the front, and was dependent on using component cables from the X360 into the TV....I still haven't had a decent look at it, however.

Depends on what hype your are talking about. Do I want a high definition player? Sure. Would I buy the add on for my 360? Probably. Am I going to buy anything until Sony for sure shoots themselves in the foot? No. Unless the HD-DVD add on for the 360 drops in price to something I can't resist.

 

I'm more or less sitting back and watching you and Marvin (mostly Marvin) by giving uninformed opinions on things and sometimes confusing others.

 

I personally could care less about the HD-DVD/Blu Ray thing myself. For the most out of either, Id still need a bigger 1080p capable tv which I dont have the money for right now, as well as the player itself. Im focusing more on HD Channels; Give me my TV in HD (and some movies too) and I'll upconvert DVD movies for the forseeable future. The format war is pointless because if left up to consumers, they'll go with the cheaper but inferior format everytime and its stupid. Blu Ray is more future proof than HD-DVD even though HD-DVD is easier to produce discs for and cheaper. The fact is, if the format war goes any longer and we'll see those awesome 100gb holographic discs out that would blow both formats to hell.

I did a ton of research 2 1/2 years ago before I purchased my TV and I still keep up to date on everything via AVS, Endgaget HD and DBS Talk. Mole bugs me because he originally had no clue about HD at all (do a little search on this site) and I was the one that explained a lot about HD to him, and now he acts like he knows everything, just because he's got a Blu Ray player and an HD DVD player, and the same exact TV as I have, which is downright funny in and of its own.

HD-DVD might be cheaper, but it is better. The PQ is better, the sound is better, the special features are better and the discs themselves are stronger. I know this stuff because I own both formats and I have seen/heard it. Go out and check both formats.

You talk about how your BR/HDDVD stuff, but you can only learn so much from reading.You can read all you want on how to fly a plane, but you won't know how to until you actually fly one. Same goes for HD/BR players.

 

I do know plenty about HD, maybe not as much as you, but I know my fair share. And of course I didn't know anything about HD originally, WHO DOES??? Yes, I learned some from you. We already went over the fact we both have the same tv because I gave you the service menu codes for your tv. I have the non-slimfit version of your Samsung 30 inch tv. The only difference is that yours is smaller in size but they are the same tv in every other respect. This is of course unless you got a new tv since last may..

 

As far as you getting hands on experience by owning both, thats great, but ultimately its silly to pay that much for hands on experience when you can go to a store and see both working for free.

The PS3 thread got me to thinking about the CES Thing on G4 and I was really impressed with the $300 wireless HDMI setup they showed but they never disclosed the range of it. I did a search and found out its 10 meters which is a shade over 30 feet.

I bought a regular old antenna to see if I could get any HD channels OTA. Nope, nothing. I could barely get any SD channels. And yes, my TV has an HD tuner.

I used to have a tuner and Zenith Silver Sensor indoor antenna for picking up OTA DTV. It worked OK...usually could get five or six channels at any given time...part of the problem is I'm located basically dead center from any major city.
