Can't they just come up with their own original ideas & make a shitty movie about that? What pisses me off more than anything is that the studios seem to make all of them as PG-13 fare. This is not just a knock on the japanese horror remakes but a significant chunk of the hollywood mainstream horror/thrillers in general. If I go to a horror film, I dont want to see some half ass gore or scares. Give me a solid R rating, dammit! For what its worth as well, the japanese Pulse wasnt that bad, I thought. The previews for the american remake is a toss up - there are two definate babes in the film, which is always a plus but I fear this is going to be another PG-13 bad rehash. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 What is funny is the american studios are not only remaking japanese horror flicks, but the ones they are choosing to make are often rehashes themselves of earlier japenese horror films IE: The Grudge, Dark Water etc... As far as NOTLD 3D goes, it is a shame because they spent all this money filming it with expensive digital equipment, but have opted to go with the shit-style red/blue 3-D instead of the other kind where you wear those clear glasses. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 Can I just mention that several Asian horror movies that have been hyped as the best thing ever (Ju-On, Ringu, Dark Water, The Eye) were huge disappointments to me. Hell, I actually like the American version of "The Ring" more than the Japanese original. Of course, saying that is practically forbidden in the minds of most horror fans, but at this point, I don't care what others think of what I like.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Why should asian horror remakes be rated R? All of them have been "ghost" movies, which don't need to be rated R. The originals that I have seen contain nothing that deserve an R rating. Horror does not need blood...Horror does not need gore...Horror does not need tits...Horror does not need an R rating The Haunting didn't have a drop of blood, and it's one of the best horror films made. Hey, I'm totally with you that horror doesnt NEED to have those things but when films are obviously pulling back to get a PG-13 rating (lets say as an example, Alien v. Predator) in hopes they can reach a larger audience, it just pisses me off. I should have clarified. I'd much rather see the original vision, which I would hope would not be some filtered BS as some of these films like Ring, Grudge, Boogeyman, etc, have. On an additional note, most of these asian remakes are not anywhere near decent as is, and adding some gore would at least alleviate some of negativity about the overall feel of the film otherwise. IE - "Well at least there was some intense and gorey blood scenes." I can't help it, but to me horror is much preferred balls to the wall instead of some "horror for all ages" bullshit. Thats not to say all horror has to be R, but its asinine to not admit that a percentage of horror fans demand it as a criteria to their favorite genre. I will say that the original US version of Ring was quite acceptable as a PG-13 film, just because it actually did deliver some decent material there, but since that point it just seems like hollywood has adapted this system of more and more PG-13 fare, but without half of the quality of its seemingly juggernaut with the original Ring. Special K 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Ringu was really just a well-acted fairly original, yet boring movie with one fucking incredibly killer scene. I liked the remake more too. I'm probably in the minority, but I really liked the Japanese Ju-On: the Grudge, thought I hear Ju-On: the Curse was better. I rented Kairo (Pulse) today. I'll see how it is. That said, the only one of these films I'll see in the theater is Silent Hill. I'm incredibly pumped for that movie. MAYBE I'll see Pulse. The trailer looked good, and I lurv Kristen Bell. The thing about Ringu is that when it came out, horror fans were talking about how it was the best horror movies in ages. When I finally saw it, I just remember saying to myself "that was it?" I think one of the reasons it got so much hype (other than it's success in it's native Japan) was because it wasn't from Hollywood, and if there is anything I've learned about horror fans today, is that you are not allowed like any movie from Hollywood that comes out these days. That's why I tend to ignore a lot of today's horror fans: because most of them are elitist snobs. I'll most likely do a longer rant about this in my smartmarks blog in the future. Special K 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 The thing about Ringu is that when it came out, horror fans were talking about how it was the best horror movies in ages. When I finally saw it, I just remember saying to myself "that was it?" I think it does just boil down to having the one GREAT scene. I've heard "The Eye" is similar in having one of the scariest scenes ever, but I don't think I'll sit through it for one scene. "Audition" was different, in that it was an extremely well-made movie, with very good performances, but once you know the movie turns into a psycho-chick horror film (and the American cover leaves absolutely no doubt about it) it loses most of its shock value. The phone-ringing scene is fucking classic, though. I'm curious as to how the "Hills" remake will be. It's been ages since I saw the original, but I remember thinking it was really good. Of course, it was the first gritty horror movie in that style that I can remember seeing. It's probably lost quite a bit of impact after seeing stuff like the original TCM and "Last House on the Left."
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 The thing about Audition is, it is a fairly "normal" non-horror-shock flick for 90% of the way through it, but when it turns, it FUCKING TURNS.

Special K 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Hmm? No. I said I liked Ju-On and I just rented Pulse. I liked Audition too, it was just really hyped up, and Ichi the Killer and Suicide Circle had pretty much killed my senses at the time. The thing was, I had heard the Eye was pretty much an average movie with one killer scene. If you say it's good, I'm sure I'll rent it. I liked the theatrical version of 'Dumplings' too. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 The Eye is great, so don't let your feelings for Ringu stop you from watching it. Do you give up on American horror, after seeing one you don't like? I've seen The Eye, and I didn't like it. It had so much potential, but flushed all down the toilet. That out of the way, there are Asian Horror movies that I do like. One in particular is Uzumaki, as well as Suicide Circle, Audition, and several others. Oh, by the way, there's a new movie that's been added. The movie is called Mortuary, and is directed by Tobe Hooper. It debuts on Sci-Fi on March 25th, with a DVD release date from Lions Gate set for April. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, it's not very good.
Special K 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2006 The original Pulse was an excellent movie. Not as scary as I imagined, (though there were some damn creepy parts), but just a really excellent movie. Really more sad than scary, IMO.
